I took a dive from here a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed with the equipment, the staff and the emphasis on safety which is vital. The centre is on the swimming pool side of the Pestana hotel and you have to enter the circular standalone part of the hotel and take the loft to floor 0; walk around the corner to the dive school. I booked my days dive via email with Stefan who was very clear and informed me to get there for ten am. I arrived on time and was met by Bruno who is French but spoke excellent English. He is very friendly, good humoured but also very professional and he got me sorted with all the correct kit and gave a very good pre dive briefing. He also checked the experience level of the group and asked questions to ensure no one was bluffing. we took a 1 tank dive straight from the centre in a small group and as we walked down into the water, one of the group got nervous and stopped. Bruno tried speaking and reassuring him with encouragement but the diver couldn’t take the dive so backed out. I was really impressed with how Bruno dealt with the situation and he told us to hang on a minute. The dive itself was pretty good with some good variety of fish. I Have dived all over the world I have experienced very different outfits and I rate this school as one of the best I’ve used. It’s only a small set up, but they are all really friendly and welcoming and the emphasis is on safety. I was very impressed with the set up here and would recommend if on the Island of Madeira.

Did three dives with my daughter whilst on Holiday, in June 2015. The dive operation is very professional, with quality hire equipment. Did two dives on the house reef, and the third in the National park which was a short boat ride away, all three dives were fine. Friendly staff. Recommended.

I booked a couple of dives at the last minute and Ralf was able to pick me up from my Hotel each morning. The Dive Centre is very well equipped and quite spacious with all the facilities you would need to feel comfortable. It is located right on the edge of the coast with it's own House Reef and easy access to their dive boats. The diving was a first class experience as we dived the newly sunk Afonso and we also dived the Garajau area. Amazing siting of a Stingray and a fantastic encounter with a Grouper fish at close quarters.

Stayed at the pestana and this was on site. Great days diving, although sometimes challenging getting into the boat from the shore if there is some swell - you will have to swim out to the boat.
There were a couple of equipment issues, leaking regs, self inflating BCDs......but apart from that all good. Just make sure you check it all before you go out.
Overall dive sites were pretty good.

I have a PADI diver certificate since many years , but my kids and wife have never tried diving before. We booked a "Discover diving" package with the diving center at Pestana palms. I could not be more satisfied with the experience!

- The staff is great, very good hand with kids, excellent teachers, no stress and even though my 11 year old daughter does not have english as a first language she had no problems following the training.
- Equipment is top notch, good quality, not worn, had even my size ( i'm a really big guy, fins in size 48? No problem)
- Location and facilities are just about perfect, we used the hotel pool for an initial dive and then walked to the the "house reef", which is ten meters from the dive center for the ocean dive. Lots of fish, protected waters, just about the perfect spot for a first dive. Everyone had fun, and I felt no worry whatsoever in putting my kids in the capable hands of the utterly professional Divemasters. All in all I could not be happier with this experience. Oh, and having less than twenty meters to the hotel jacuzzi and saunas after the dive was not exactly unpleasant.

We went for the snorkeling with dolphins, but this is more dolphin watching while wearing a wetsuit on a very slippery boat with dive instructors who know very little of sealife. We were once in the water way too far from the Dolphins and while there was enough chance to go for second time they went the easy way so people could make good pictures of dolphins. You pay 10 Euro per person extra for gear. It is probably a good diving club, you can watch dolphins as you can with a lot of companies which have much more comfortable boats but the snorkeling with dolphins is a cheap rip off.

Hello We are sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy our dolphin trip! Here we work with wild animals and therefore each trip is different. There are rules we have to comply with as to not disturb or agitate the dolphins, therefore we can only follow a single pod for no more than ten minutes or another boat has come to the pod. We feel very strongly about following these rules as after all we are dealing with wild animals and we have to ensure the safety of not only the dolphins but also the surrounding environment. We always do a briefing before we go on the boat to explain which animals we have the possibility of seeing and which dolphins we are allowed to snorkeling with. In addition to this we have the boat captain in contact with a dolphin spotter to help us find the dolphins and make the trip as enjoyable as possible. Our aluminum boat is a custom built dive and snorkel boat for easy exit to the water and entry to the boat; we never had any complaints, but we will check if the floor is slippery and will find a solution for it. With our very best regards, Ralf from Scuba Madeira

We committed to diving very last minute and had an excellent experience with the shop in it's communication and willingness to work us in last minute. Equipment and staff were excellent and we enjoyed the wreck dive. Water in August was nice, and we think the 5-6m wetsuits may have been overkill, but better to be warm. :) A first for us was swimming to the diveboat off the rocky coast of the hotel, then the 15 minute boat ride to the wreck, and on return, the short swim from dive boat to the stairs...worked fine!

My family and I went on holiday to Madeira for two weeks and I wanted to qualify for my Second certificate to become an open water diver with my father. We had been Scuba diving the previous year when we qualified as Scuba divers. This year we wanted to qualify for our open water diver certifications. I went on my first dive this year with an instructor called Arnaud. He was very nice and friendly and helped me with with all the excercises I needed to complete to qualify. I was able to pull them off in the pool but not in the sea. On my second dive I had a different Instructor. This time my instructor was a female. Her name was Stefania. Stefania was so kind, gentle, funny, lovely and so supportive to me. In this dive I was able to do more excersises in the sea. I accomplished them all but for one- taking my mask of underwater. I hated the feeling of cold water hitting my face so suddenly. Stefania encouraged me to take of my mask every minuite, she supported me in my situation every second we were together. After a few dives I managed to achieve it! This was all thanks to Stenania. I will never forget her. She was like a sister to me. I hope that I will see her again next year! I look forward to going back to Scuba Madeira. Thank you to all the team.
Katy.

A nice trip with seeing the whales and swimming with dolphins as a highlight. It was spoilt somewhat by 30 minutes of our allotted 2hrs being taken up clearing plastic from the ocean. No refund or additional time so felt a little cheated.

First, a big thank you to everyone at Scuba Madeira for a very enjoyable 4 days diving. A special mention to Bruno, who worked so hard - he seemed to be everywhere at once! And to Stefan, who delivered on his promise that I would see big groupers.

I emailed the dive centre about 3 weeks before we were going to Madeira to make a arrangement for us to do an 8 dive package. I received a prompt reply from Stefan & he emailed me again shortly before we went to confirm the arrangements for the first day.

This is a very busy dive centre & the experience could easily have been very impersonal but everyone is so friendly & works so hard that it wasn't like that.

We hired all our equipment apart from masks & computers. At 19C this was the coolest water we'd dived in so far but they provide full 6mm wetsuits with integral hood & I was warmer than I've been on dives in warmer water. The BCDs & regulators were all good. The regs are DIN fitting rather than yoke & we hadn't used this type before but Stefan showed us how to fasten them. The mouthpieces on the regs were slightly different to others I've used & they were much more comfortable - I sometimes have problems with the mouthpiece rubbing my gums sore but these were fine.

We did both shore & boat dives. Whichever you do, you have to walk down steps in full scuba kit to get to the water. The boat can't get right in so you have to swim a short distance to get to it.

We thoroughly enjoyed all the dives, the guides (some from Scuba Madeira & some from their sister company Madeira Divepoint) all set a comfortable pace for the dives. They were very attentive & we felt safe diving with them.

The dive briefings are excellent. They have pictures showing the topography of the dives, which we found very useful.

Their website mentions that there are toilets & showers - these are in the Pestana Palms hotel, not in the dive centre itself. In the ladies there were two very good showers. As we had quite a long surface interval it was nice to be able to rinse the salt off & change into dry clothes.

There are restaurants & bars nearby if you want to get something to eat. There is also a very good supermarket (Pingo Duce) across the road. We went there & bought food & drink & then had a picnic on the benches overlooking the sea. There is an Italian ice cream place a bit further along, near the Lido, that does very good ice cream at reasonable prices & the portions are big!

There were one or two minor things that could have been better. Firstly, I always put the SPG through the strap that goes over the cumberband to keep it from trailing. As I was making my final checks before going in on the 2nd dive the guide, Wilfried, suddenly grabbed the SPG and put it through the pocket of the BCD instead saying " you won't be able to see it there" (meaning where I'd put it). I always dive with it like that & I can see it perfectly well. I'm not the world's most experienced diver but I am capable of arranging my scuba gear so that it is comfortable & I can find everything.

My husband mentioned that about half his tanks only had 190 bar in to start with. Whilst 10 bar isn't going to make a huge difference we generally expect to have a minimum of 200 bar in a tank.

The boats (which they share with Madeira Divepoint) are not particularly easy to get on & the smaller one is isn't easy to get off. Climbing a ladder with fins on was a new experience for us! Both boats have metal seats and the larger one has non-slip material stuck to them. The smaller one hasn't & at times I felt as if I was slipping off the seat. As we kept our scuba gear on whilst on the boat I was concerned about what would happen if I did fall off. For the longer ride out to the Bowbelle we took our scuba gear off, which was much more comfortable.

Overall we enjoyed the diving & if we go back to Madeira to dive then we will definitely be visiting Scuba Madeira.
