- Cherriesfan99Cheltenham, United Kingdom2,250 contributionsSadly this was a bit of a bun fight.Lovely church, but rather overrun by large numbers of cruise passengers who were there to visit the nearby Monte Gardens. There is no peaceful spot, no quiet contemplation, no meditation possible, in fact it is a bit of a bun fight. We were totally unable to quietly look around without being jostled or having someone stepping in front of you, so that they can get that vital photo shot - goodness knows what the local people feel about it.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 5, 2023
- Steve_Grant1Oldham, United Kingdom1,841 contributionsNice ChurchThis is a nice church that is not far from the top of the cable car. We struggled to initially find the steps up and walked past and around the hill that is situated on. A pleasant stroll. We found a road up but went back down the steps which came out near the toboggan station.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 23, 2024
- Richard HMatabeleland North Province, Zimbabwe348 contributionsA distinctive churchDo you treat this as a church or a tourist attraction?! I simply popped my head in the door. It might well have been nice to wander round but that might depend on your religious or architectural bent. As with all Madeira churches I looked in, it is decorated and ornate. Outside, it is certainly distinct and stands out. The steep steps in front are quite a feature too.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten May 4, 2024

I am basing my score solely on the setting and views from the top of the steps leading to the church as we did not go inside.
Great views of the city of Funchal and the location is not far from the top cable car station as well as some of the gardens and the start of the toboggan ride.
As we visited in November we managed to avoid the crowds that go during the height of the season and at festival time.

Stunning outside and inside. Like all churches in Madeira, the insides are spectacular with the decoration, gold leaf, statues, and icons. This church is no exception.

A very attractive church outside and inside. You have to climb about 60 steps to reach the church itself with its beautiful black and white facade. Inside it is the usual highly decorated Catholic church, but unfortunately a large part of one wall was completely covered for restoration.

Friday 11th June and we visited the Civil Parish of Monte, we took the Teleferico cable car.
One of the main attractions in Monte is this 18th century Church which was completed in 1748.
The name of the Church translates as Our Lady of Monte, who is the Patron Saint of Madeira. In 1818 it was inaugurated in her honour.
The Feast day of Our Lady of Monte is celebrated each year on the 15th August.
We climbed the 68 steps up to the Church. On a courtyard/landing area, between the 2 flight of steps, stands the Statue of Emperor Charles I of Austria.
One of the features inside the Church is the coffin of Charles I of Austria in one if the altars along the side walls of the Church
As we entered the Church we were certainly not expecting what we saw. Normally can always find something to say, in this instance lost for words, it has to be seen to be believed.
The main altar is ornate, elaborate with its pillars, golden sculpted surround and painted religious images.
Everything about here is spectacular, took our breath away.
The walls are adorned with large paintings of religious imagery.
There are a number of highly ornate altars that line the walls of the Church.
Even the wooden ceiling with it's paintings is worth a mention.

Our tour guide, with our cruise ship excursion, took us up a hillside path, with wide stone steps, as an alternative to reaching the church entrance with the 52 stairs at the front of the church. We came to see the coffin of Emperor Karl I who had died in Funchal of Spanish Flu in 1922 after choosing to be exiled in this town after WWI when his Austrian-Hungarian Empire was dissolved in 1918. This year is the 100th anniversary of the king’s death and the church was celebrating it in different ways with events noted on an oversized poster at the church entrance, beside the bronze statue of the Emperor.
Inside the church, the coffin is on the left hand side of the church and is placed in a side room. On one wall, the king’s youthful portrait was hung, in the middle was his coffin, and to the right of the coffin were objects to show his once kingly status. The gilt crown on top of his dark coffin, without the jewels, of course, is a copy of the coronation crown called, Crown of St. Wenzelos, as explained by a bronze plaque placed beside the coffin. In front of the coffin there was a special wreath with the number 100 filled out in yellow flowers. At the main altar, 10 large white floral tributes were placed at the church’s main altar and a similar number beside the coffin. What a wonderful display of flowers!
The small church itself was unremarkable, but I was, indeed, surprised with the amount of gilt used to frame the paintings and the surrounding architectural features behind the main altar. Above the main altar on the ceiling was an inspirational, cheerful painting done in a style popular in the 19th century, while the rest of the ceiling was wooden.
This church is close to the toboggan rides and the cable car ride – perhaps one way to reach Monte hill to see these attractions, but effortless with a cruise ship excursion. I was glad we had signed up for this tour rather than doing it OYO.

We were lucky to visit this church during the annual Madeiran festivals week, so the whole area around was festooned with garlands of the plastic flowers which are a local tradition (and reused every year) - a sea of colour!
It is quite a climb up the steps from the start of the toboggan run to the church, but the interior is lovely and the views excellent.
The interior is quite typical of Madeira churches, with an ornate altar area, chapels and ceiling. The tiling here was not as detailed as in some churches we have seen.
There is an interesting little twist here in that the final Habsburg emperor is interred here, having died on the island in exile.

Nossa Senhora do Monte is a Catholic pilgrimage church. It was built in 1741. As an earthquake destroyed the completed new building in 1748, it could not be inaugurated until December 20, 1818. Charles of Austria/Hungary is buried in the church.
A beautiful church worth seeing, the outside is decorated with flags and banners as well as a small statue of the emperor and king.

Stunning little church, with beautiful details. You can get there by taxi, public transport (2euros) or cable car (13euros).
You will have beautiful views of Funchal from up there, there is beautiful garden on the right side of the church.

The church, first built in 1741, was seriously affected by an earthquake in 1748, but was rebuilt in 1818. With the Monte Palace gardens nearby, a park next door and the traditional cart ride down the hill, Monte is a great place to spend an afternoon. Interestingly, Emperor Charles I of Austria died in exile on Madeira island and was laid to rest in the church.

How can we get to the church from Jardim Monte Palace? Thank you. Then can you catch the bus back to Funchal?
Written April 1, 2019
It is really a very short walk. You will make it without problem. But there are some stairs in the end. To get back you maybe bought a return ticket so you go back to the cable station, or you can take the bus. If you like you can go with one ot the "sledges" being a famous tourist attraction. They are made of wood and go on the asphalt road! You will have a "driver" who knows how to control the thing.

I believe that the church opens early and each time I have been up to Monte it has been open, even if there are services on. The bell towers and upper floor are open via a door which does not intrude should a service be on- then once the service is ended it is possible to wander around this beautiful church.
Should you not wish to intrude during a service then there is a lovely chapel within the tea gardens close by.
