We were picked up on the dot at 8:40 am. We were staying at the Baia Azul and so the furthest out from Funchal centre and the first to be picked up. We had to hand sanitise every time we entered the bus and obviously had to wear face masks. We were on the bus for approximately 40 minutes before we had everyone on board and could actually head off to the trip which felt a long time. It probably wouldn't seem that long normally but I think because we had face masks on it just felt very long. From here it was then another hour before we arrived at Pico Arieiro. We had about 20 minutes to get refreshments and use the toilets. There is a charge throughout this trail of 50 cents to use the toilet which I think isn't great. It's not the cost but the principle. We then started our hike which, for me and my husband, seemed fairly leisurely. We had turned up with just a fleece and trainers and the rest of our group had walking poles, walking boots and waterproofs. We packed trainers purely due to the weight of our case and we didn't have any issues wearing these compared to our normal walking boots. Walking poles will be helpful if you usually need these but if you don't, they're not necessary as there are lots of handrails along the route. Definitely pack a waterproof!! We were rushed getting to reception due to slight delays with breakfast Covid procedures within our hotel and so totally forgot to pack the waterproofs. Unfortunately we had a very cloudy and increasingly wet day. Luckily I had packed a brolly in our pack at the start of the week and hadn't taken it out and it actually worked better for me than a raincoat. I think we had both anticipated that the tour would be a lot quicker than it was due to the timings given and so we had packed only water. We had a break part the way through and were told to gather energy for the next bit which was going to be difficult and to enjoy our snacks of which we had none! In all honesty we didn't need them. When we reached Pico Ruvio, we were told there was just a further 15 minutes walk to the peak and then another 15 back down to the shepherds hut where we could grab our packed lunch or a bite to eat from the shop. We had an hour in total and so we decided to do the peak first and it turned out that we were the only ones in our group to go to the top. It was a sea of cloud at the top and we couldn't see anything but for us it was the sense of achievement that we'd come all this way to get to the peak and so we did it. We headed back to the shepherdd' hut and as we had nothing with us to eat we indulged in the traditional Madeira fruit cake. We then headed back along a much easier path for a further 30 to 40 minutes to meet the minibus (arrived just after 3pm). On our way back to the hotels we did stop in Santana for a coffee stop and we spotted a traditional Santana house on the next road which we didn't expect and so that was great (and no charge at these toilets!). Our guide was very knowledgeable, spoke German, French and English to our group and was so conscious to manage everybody's abilities. He really is a fantastic guide. For me and my husband the pace was a little bit slow but we really didn't mind as it made it quite relaxed. There were 3 couples and 5 individuals on the walk and a real mix of nationalities, ages and abilities. I think some of the group did struggle a little bit but no one failed to get to the end. Having done a lot of walking in the UK I have to say that this path is pretty good and well maintained. The only thing to be mindful of is that in some sections, the wire handle which is encased mostly in plastic tubing was sticking out. Our guide was able to warn us which sections to avoid although there was one section I clearly missed as I did get a cut on my hand from the wire sticking out. However, we always pack a first aid kit and so I had an antiseptic wipe and a plaster on standby which did the trick. We arrived back at our hotel for about 5:30 pm. Overall this was a fantastic thing to do whilst in Madeira. We enjoyed it despite the poor weather we had and so looking forward to a going back and tackling it in better weather. Our guide was amazing and our group was so lovely and friendly that the whole day was a real pleasure.

Six of us hired a vehicle for four consecutive days of walking. We had chosen a variety of levada walks and enjoyed each one - even the one we did on a very soggy day. We were collected promptly from our hotel each morning and the driver was waiting for us at the end of each walk. Vehicles we always clean and tidy and the driver professional, informative and interesting each day. We could not fault the service we had.

Nelson took me to the start of the hike I wanted to do, Encumeada, as the bus is currently not running. Communications were very clear and he came to pick me up exactly on time. It was a pleasure to be in the car with him, he told me about a lot of other hikes I could do, some of which were not even in my very comprehensive hiking guide. Thanks Nelson, see you next time!
