We were lucky enough to book a short getaway to Madeira towards the end of summer, in between lockdowns (Madeira is not on quarantine list like rest of Portugal). The island is super organised for taking in tourists with a free Covid testing regime at the airport and user friendly app. We made sure we had tests done with a negative result within 72 hours before flying so went straight through the airport, but otherwise the queue for testing was not terrible. Once at the hotel we researched hiking tours and found Hit the Road Tours - great website, and Jeff the owner was very responsive to our requests. They really made it easy to customise our hike to fit around other commitments we had with restaurant bookings. The hike itself was amazing...such beautiful scenery, and a great mix of relaxed walking with some more exciting / tough sections. Getting to know more about the island through our guide, and just great general conversation during our hike, were some of the highlights. We will try to get back to Madeira soon and will definitely go hiking with Hit the Road again!

We had two lovely private day trips with Hugo in September. We initially booked just the West tour but enjoyed it so much we decided to go on the East tour as well.
I went with my daughter, her partner and my 16-month granddaughter. Communication was really good before the tour to make sure the child seat was suitable. Hugo was a great guide showing the island and anticipating our needs with a toddler in tow. We saw such beautiful scenery on both days and it was fun travelling in the jeep high up into the hills. I was worried that I might be scared on the steep roads but it felt really safe. On both days we opted for reasonably priced set lunch in lovely local hotels (you could choose to take one of two menus at different prices) and we really enjoyed the meals with lovely views. I felt that the company (like Madeira) is very COVID-safe, checking temperatures at the start of each day and we all wore masks in the vehicle too without it detracting from the enjoyment of the tours. All in all we felt the tours were a great introduction to Madeira and I look forward to doing more in future!

Booked this trip before visiting Madiera. Quiet apprehensive, since on arrival you have numerous companies "offering the same tours" at totally varied prices. Had we done the right thing booking with this company???? YOU BET WE DID. Hugo was our tour guide for the day and we shared the vehicle with two other ladies and we just hope they enjoyed the day as much as we did. Brilliant day, don't want to say too much and spoil the surprise, other then "Buckle in and Enjoy the Ride". Could not faut it, enjoy, enjoy, just like we did. Can certainly confirm, as others have done, that the view from the restaurant is spectacular. Thank you Hugo, for a brillian tour.

Because of delays getting to Madeira, we had to cancel our initial 4x4 tour. The tour company was more than happy to accommodate us by rescheduling this tour at the end of our stay. They were even able to make various suggestions for our stay prior to the tour. They were also very quick to respond.
Our initial plan was to take the tour to get a feel for the island, filling in the blanks later with the rental car. As the tour was rescheduled and we had seen most of the main attractions with our rental car, this created a challenge for Jeff, our tour operator. Jeff did not disappoint. We were picked up at our lodging, and true to the tour description, we spent part of the day off roading to areas not otherwise accessible. Amazing views! Jeff was an excellent driver navigating roads that would have been very difficult, if not impossible for a visiting driver. He was very knowledgeable about local traditions and history having visited family in Madeira as a child, and moved to Madeira later.
Jeff and the “Hit the Road” tour group truly care about their clients, making sure they have the best experience possible. I would encourage those planning a trip to Madeira to watch the “Hit the Road Madeira” Vlog for some interesting background and previews. Very well done!

In July 2023 my wife and I completed “Big Walk Tour – 2023” organized by Hit the Road Madeira. What can I say…. This is probably the best group tour experience we had, not just because the beauty of the Island is unbelievable, but also because Jeff, Veronica, Tiago and everyone who helped with the tour are AMAZING hard working, passionate people for whom to ensuring that we had an incredible time was their top priority, and they succeeded in every way.
We met so many friendly, funny, compassionate people who we now we can call friends. When we booked this tour with Jeff, I had some worries about “what if” something goes wrong, and Jeff replied right away, “do not worry, we will take care of everything”. And indeed, he did.
The tour was meticulously planned from start to finish. Camping, shelter stay, beautiful hotels, breakfast, dinners, amazing hikes.
One more thing to say, please make sure you are prepared for the long walks, which will require some hiking experience…. If you decide that “Big Walk” is not your type of vacation, you can’t go wrong by choosing “Hit The Road Madeira” for any other activity that the company is offering: Jeep tours, Sunrise/ Sunset Tours. We definitely coming back to Madeira (we fall in love with the Island) and we definitely booking our future tours with Jeff.
In conclusion, if you seek an adventure that combines stunning landscapes, wonderful people, and exceptional organization, I highly recommend tours with Hit The Road Madeira. You won't be disappointed!

We did 3 private tours with Hit The Road and each tour was AMAZING and UNFORGETTABLE!
Jeff was our guide for the Sunrise half day tour and Hugo for the West side and East side full day tours. Both of them went above and beyond to give us the best experience possible, taking us “off road” to locations that you would never see with a typical tour company.
They were so friendly and so much fun to be with…it felt like we were hanging out with a friend for the day! Without a doubt, spending the 3 days with Jeff and Hugo was the highlight of our trip.
Book with Hit the Road and you won’t be disappointed! They deserve more than 5 stars!!

Hugo was a skilled driver and fun to talk to! He brought us to breathtaking remote areas with views that are unmatched in the world. The tour is a mix of driving on remote roads and small walking excursions to amazing view points. Add in a wonderful lunch (chosen especially based on my love of passion fruit) and a stop for poncha! Pictures do not do the trip justice. We did not want the day to end.

Had a great tour to see the sunset at Pico do Areeiro and was lucky to have great weather and a wonderful sunset. This was a small group of 3 and our guide Fabio who took time to stop off along the way at some great viewpoints with planty of time to take pictures and enjoy the surroudings. The higher we went the better the views and Pico do Areeiro had some stunnign views all around the island, very reminiscent of Machu Picchu. I would highly recommend doing this tour and Hit The Road would certainly be my choice again. :O)

It was a sunrise tour on Pico do Arieiro. Fernando picked us up at 6am. He's a great, and funny, tour guide. The sunrise was beautiful. After that, he took us for a short levada walk, which was beautiful also. Fernando knows a lot. His enthusiasm, and constant usage of his catch phrase 'Come ooooooonn' are contagious. Over all, it was a great time. I tried to book more tours with Hit the Road, but they were, understandably, fully booked. If you plan on booking a tour/hike on Madeira, better book it from home, some time before you arrive. There are lots of companies and possibilities on the island, but some (like with Hit the Road) will be fully booked and not available on short notice. (But as I said, you'll find something else, just not with these guys)

Our friends booked 2 tours with this Jeep tour company to cover the island and Hugo who was our driver was absolutely brillant. Funny, knowledgeable and highly respected by his peers we thoroughly enjoyed our time.

Been to Madeira a number of times but these days just for the day on cruise ships. We shall be arriving on Azura 7 Oct and as it's an overnight we shall have time to do a trip over the mountain to Santana something i did 20 years or so ago and still remember, We are two people 72 and 77 years neither of us very agile I am afraid. Can you tell us if you can do?, how much? and your recommendations?

Unfortunately we're full up for today... and we don't do half days either :(
The good news is that we still have space Tomorrow (Thursday) as well as Friday for a full day East Tour.
That tour starts at 9am, pick up at your hotel, and will have you back by around 5pm. We are very casual so we might only be back by 6pm ;)
There's usually not a lot of walking involved unless the group is actually looking to do some walking....
You should always be dressing well :D closed shoes and a jacket should be enough, lately we've been working in shorts and T shirts but the last few days have made us put a jacket on... not a big deal though...
If you're interested in the East tour the next couple of days, please email me, that's the way I handle all our bookings, and if you want any other information, as to where we go, what we do, etc.... you can visit our website....
On our website everything has been made very clear, and it's very easy to use :D all our contact details are listed on our TripAdvisor page....
