Sunrise Tour : Half Day Private 4x4 Tour

This is a special tour indeed.

Ideal for adventurous families, couples and photographers

There is a certain feeling about being up before everybody else, experiencing the marvels of nature uninterrupted and in all its glory

Our number 1 sunrise spot is Pico do Areiro, the third highest peak of the island.

Very often we are above the clouds and the colours are absolutely extraordinary, truly a once in a lifetime moment!

Of course we cannot always guarantee the perfect weather conditions for the perfect sunrise so we have back up spots such as;

Pico do facho, Ponta Sao Lourenço, Guindaste Viewpoint and one or two secret spots, each with their own unique characteristics.

This is a real adventure and an experience you will not easily forget.

My guide, Jeff De Gouveia, took me in his Land Rover for an adventurous and informative 4x4 tour of Madeira. Driving from Funchal, we quickly reached Pico do Arieiro, 1,800 metres high, which looks like Scotland or New Zealand. We drove along cobbled roads, originally built by the king and then walked along a levada – part of a 500-mile network of irrigation channels which make ideal trekking routes. After walking along Balcaoes levada, which offers splendid views of a laurel forest gorge, we reached a stunning viewpoint, where birdlife may be spotted, from kestrels and buzzards to robins and the Madeira firecrest. Next was Santana village, famous for traditional thatched houses, and Caniçal, a former whaling village where scenes from 1956 movie Moby Dick were filmed, before heading back to Funchal. It’s a very interesting, entertaining and sociable way to explore off the beaten track and find out about Madeira from a chatty, friendly local. hittheroadmadeira.com hittheroadjeep@gmail.com

We booked a Private Tour to the West Of The Island in late August. Hugo was our guide and clearly loves his job and Madeira. It was incredibly beneficial to have someone who knows the island like the back of his hand and could take us to some stunning viewpoints and places which we wouldn't of visited if I had hired a car. We also had a taster of a Lavada walk which if we had had more time, would have booked as a separate excursion. After being a little apprehensive as to how a trip would work in the 'new norm' the day worked beautifully. Temperature taken before setting off, hand sanitiser available and masks on in the car. Thanks for a brilliant day Hugo. Will be returning to Madeira and booking with Hit The Road again.

We had two lovely private day trips with Hugo in September. We initially booked just the West tour but enjoyed it so much we decided to go on the East tour as well. I went with my daughter, her partner and my 16-month granddaughter. Communication was really good before the tour to make sure the child seat was suitable. Hugo was a great guide showing the island and anticipating our needs with a toddler in tow. We saw such beautiful scenery on both days and it was fun travelling in the jeep high up into the hills. I was worried that I might be scared on the steep roads but it felt really safe. On both days we opted for reasonably priced set lunch in lovely local hotels (you could choose to take one of two menus at different prices) and we really enjoyed the meals with lovely views. I felt that the company (like Madeira) is very COVID-safe, checking temperatures at the start of each day and we all wore masks in the vehicle too without it detracting from the enjoyment of the tours. All in all we felt the tours were a great introduction to Madeira and I look forward to doing more in future!

We were lucky enough to book a short getaway to Madeira towards the end of summer, in between lockdowns (Madeira is not on quarantine list like rest of Portugal). The island is super organised for taking in tourists with a free Covid testing regime at the airport and user friendly app. We made sure we had tests done with a negative result within 72 hours before flying so went straight through the airport, but otherwise the queue for testing was not terrible. Once at the hotel we researched hiking tours and found Hit the Road Tours - great website, and Jeff the owner was very responsive to our requests. They really made it easy to customise our hike to fit around other commitments we had with restaurant bookings. The hike itself was amazing...such beautiful scenery, and a great mix of relaxed walking with some more exciting / tough sections. Getting to know more about the island through our guide, and just great general conversation during our hike, were some of the highlights. We will try to get back to Madeira soon and will definitely go hiking with Hit the Road again!

This is a very special tour that my family and I would highly recommend. The views are absolutely breathtaking even without the perfect sunrise. It was my birthday and our guide Hugo really went the extra mile to make it memorable. Hit the Road have gone to great lengths to ensure that guests are safe during COVID, we really felt safe and that our well-being was at the forefront of all decisions. Great tour, great guide, great company. We will definitely do this tour and others offers by Hit the Road in the future.
