I was absolutely horrified by the conditions of the birds. There were four giant Macaws which are hugs tropical birds in a tiny cage and one pheasant who was banging itself against the sides of the 2 foot by 2 foot cage out of distress. Both the macaws and the pheasant were visibly distressed. I couldn't enjoy the visit at all and it left me feeling so distressed for them, just like another reviewer has said. I will be contacting the Madeiran tourist board in regards to this, as in this day and age this is completely and utterly unacceptable.

Felt so sorry for the parrots and other birds . They were in very small cages with very little extra stimulation for them. Not sure why they couldn’t be given more room.
The gardens are lovely but I couldn’t enjoy them due to worrying about the birds. I hope something is done to improve their living conditions. Madeira seems so considerate of the environment that I was shocked to see such poor conditions for the birds in the president’s garden

My comments reflect those of lots of others on here.
Whilst the garden is beautiful, I left thinking about the poor caged birds and the conditions ther were being kept in! It was shocking to see in 2024.
At the end of my visit, via Google translate, I let a member of staff know my feelings.
I was told that many people say the same thing but the the general opinion is, nobody cares!
I wouldn't recommend this place and as someone else said, it's a stain on Madeira.

I absolutely loved this garden with its beautiful plants, outstanding views and pretty buildings…..until I saw the cages; bare, bare, tiny cages with beautiful macaws and peacocks trapped and bored out of their brains. I was incredibly upset to see this and it clouded the rest of my holiday. Please, please take these birds to somewhere where they can be happy and stimulated and fulfilled. They are intelligent birds and need and deserve to have quality of life. They do not enhance this otherwise lovely garden. Their presence makes it a horrible place.

Quinta Vigia is the residence of the President of Madeira. As you come from the west of Funchal, you go down a steep hill. Quinta Vigia is about half way down on the right hand side just before the public park. If the gates are closed, you can't go in but if they are open then the public is welcome to walk in. The garden is small but a lovely place to walk around with a lot of flowers, water features and various birds in cages (parrots, peacocks etc). You can't go into the house itself but there is a small but beatiful chapel which is part of the house which is open to the public.
We go in quite often as we are passing.

The garden is very well-kept and worth a visit, but there are several small cages of birds (macaws, peacocks and others) which are kept in cages that are far too small.
This really spoiled the visit - the birds were sorry-looking creatures: bored, no room to move and should either be in much larger cages or not kept at all.

Relatively small garden but absolutely packed with well tended flowers and shrubs. Very exotic. Stunning views across Funchal Bay make it the perfect place for a visit.

It is the official residence of the Governor of the Region of Madeira. I went there in an official invitation and I was impressed with the garden and the wide Atlantic view. You can not have access to all complex but sure you will find a permission for a look if there isn't an event going on.

Birds are kept in dirty, small cages with nothing to keep them stimulated. The macaws were clearly distressed. Appalling stain on Madeira, considering the governor of the region lives next to them!
Gardens were otherwise beautiful.
Do not visit. You will leave distressed.

As with other reviewers, I wouldn’t have visited the gardens or paid the entrance fee if I’d have known that such beautiful birds were trapped in small cages. The poor pheasant must suffer from loneliness, and the other birds were clearly suffering from the stress of confinement. Seeing such cruelty unfortunately ruined what would have been a pleasant 30 minutes.
