The fort dominates the west of Funchal and is definitely worth the walk. Especially when you can get an excellent drink or light lunch when you get to the top.

to a lovely n tranquil hilltop fort. Good views although walking up can be an effort but worth it. Access to two of the four bastions and a few paintings of the fort in the past. Most pleasant!

This fortress goes back to the 15th century and has just be restored, it was the defence system for Funchal. It is a very steep walk to get here and recommend good comfortable shoes. Entrance is free as it is funded by the people of...More

Always wanted to visit here, did so recently. Great friendly cafe there. Wonderful views looking down towards the port. Very warm the day we visited and a nice cool breeze was much welcome. We enjoyed it, put it on your list.

After a 1.2 km workout climbing steeply up from the town centre the fort provides a fantastic viewpoint. The building was open and free to go around. There is a small, interesting exhibition room with pictures and a short history of the fort. Otherwise, although...More

Unfortunately the castle is currently closed and I cannot find any information about an opening date. Nonetheless the views over Funchal from the walkway in front of the castle are spectacular and the nearby cafe is a welcome diversion after all that climbing.

As noted by others the fort is closed. The views at the top are worth the climb though and if you have young children there's a little play area next to coffee shop. We climbed up for morning coffee and cake!

A steep climb, although one can also go via the roads in either side (we did this bc of stroller). Very nice view, but unfortunately still closed with no explanation.

It's a very steep climb to the fort and unfortunately it isn't open at the moment due to restoration, it would have been nice if some information had been advised before the walk to it.

Buses go up the main dual carriageway to west of fort. These leaves you at bottom of the hill though with a big climb. Depends how fit you feel! Alternatively walk up from old town or get a taxi for a few Euros...
