Soon to be a Museum

This is just an old Fort without much interesting going on although an archeological museum will soon be housed there. Inside there are some old photographs to see and a café.

Entry is quite cheap. Once you’re in, you’re on your own. Don’t expect any explanatory notices, booklets, or any help. We’ve visited forts in 3 continents, so know the subject fairly well. For us, it was fascinating to see a Portuguese fort and how it all worked. If you don’t know the subject, it won’t be as good. There are... More

This colourful (yellow actually) old fort sits on the beach just east of city centre. For the sum of 3 euro you get to explore it and check out a small exhibition (temporary). Quite nice. Great views of the shoreline too.

The old fort attracts with its colourful walls and impressive position, and we were enticed by what might lie within. However, we wasted our entry fee, as there is no information given, by leaflet or display board, and the small random display of photography has no contextual story. We left feeling very disappointed.

We decided to pop into the fort as we hadn't been in before on our 5 previous trips. Our young daughter enjoyed the parapets and some of the smaller corridors as she found them a bit spooky and the art exhibition had a few interesting photographs but it was only really a half an hours diversion at most.

Didn't actually go in you have to pay (don't know how much) but took photos. It is worth a visit as it's very colourful and bright looking

This is an empty fort with a views over the harbour , that you can easily see from elsewhere, with the pretence of an art gallery. It has about 5 old photos of Funchal and some of a restoration somewhere.

Constructed during the 16th century to protect Funchal from pirate attacks, Fort de Sao Tiago is small in comparison to many other forts, but it is interesting to visit and experience the construction and the scenic views from this vantage point. Unfortunately there is no guide map or any information at all available to explain the various aspects of the... More

Went along to check out the views, have visited several times before. Now there is a small entrance charge but still worth the time to visit. Efforts have been made to improve the historical knowledge base and the old photos on display really enhance the visit.

We have previously visited this Restaurant. It is located next to the Fort of Funchal, the open eating area is seperated from the main restaurant by a narrow street - lots going on! New extension due to open. Our food was good and not so good, but the staff are really good indeed. Not cheap!
