We saw the facility, thought about eating at the restaurant in it, but could get no one's attention to make a reservation--the restaurant was empty at the time. We did not realize there was an art museum in it. As a fortress, I am not sure it is worth a special visit. The art museum might be nice, but Madeira... More

This place is nice if you want to see an old fortress that defended the town from pirats. The inside is a modern art museum now. Some parts are free to walk in; but not all the parts

Only 3 euros per person but much is closed as it appears in use. There are a few walls & locations where cannons would have been placed & very small amount of background information on the fortress. A few large rooms filled with pictures & photos including the archilogical site near the harbour ar a road junction. Not worth even... More

Nice views but that is all. It's very cheap but really nothing to see. No history boards around, no cannons or anything of interest. There are a few pictures that are irrelevant the port.

Visit the Sao Tiago Fort and discover how the island became inhabitat and how the island was cultivated and became so popular on sea travels. Great stories.

Very interesting defensive perspective of the old times in Madeira Island. Very nice place for family photos and for party events since is not military anymore. Great views over the city and the seaside.

Nice to wander around and look at the views but not worth the 3e entrance fee. The man selling us our tickets couldn't even be bothered to interrupt his conversation with a friend to tell us how much it was/ where to go/whether we needed change. I liked it, because I love wandering old buildings but it's certainly not worth... More

A very nice place for a stroll, taking pictures of the fort itself, but also for the nice view of the ocean and towards Funchal in the west. Not much happens inside the walls, a nice courtyard, stairs, different levels and turrets, and a nice restaurant with beutiful views. Lots of restaurants and bars in the street behind the fortres... The fort is at the far end of the Zona Velha and worth a visit at any time of the day. Its kept beautifully, and the strong yellow / ochre paint works beautifully. There is access to swimming just to one side of the fort, and that just adds to the ambience of the whole area.

My friend got married here, and was a day to remember. I often visit as the views are great of the port in Funchal, and surrounding mountains.
