We visited this on a whim! Walked up from the old town and this is not for the faint hearted! I believe next time I would choose a bus! Lovely old place and we saw orchids of all types we have never seen before! the perfume of some were amazing! Recommend you go to the main house and sit in... More

We visited Boa Vista Orchids as part of an organised trip and were not disappointed. The English owner, Patrick, gave lots of information as the group walked round and was on hand afterwards for any individual questions about orchids and plants in general. Our tour included tea and cake and this was delicious. If you love orchids I can thoroughly... More

Some friends and I went to the orchid garden as part of an organised trip. The orchids are amazing - so different from the ones available in the UK. Patrick gave us a guided tour and he was very knowledgeable, not just about the orchids but all the plants in the garden. We ended with tea and cake in the... More

When in Funchal this orchid garden is a must to visit. It is not very big but has a huge display of the most beautiful orchids and tropical plants. There is a small entrance fee and some plants can be bought and packaged for you. There is plenty of advice freely given on how to care them. Before you leave... More

I thought i had died and gone to Heaven. Betty Garton runds this magnificent orchid collection in Madeira. I have never seen such beautifu species in all my life. The taxi driver was apologizing for the ramshackle garden, but in fact that is the charm of the hothouses and any gardener would agree that seen a place like this is... More

Went to Boa Vista as part of a trip organised by Portobay hotels so day had already kicked off well with Chocolate and liqueurs! The garden is quite small but contains many of the Madeirense plants which are described in great detail by Patrick Garton, relative of the original founder Group Captain Cecil Garton. Patrick's horticultural training at Kew shines... More

We went there for the orchids - the surrounding gardens are fairly small and not spectacular by Madeira standards. Were charged EUR 4.50 per person to enter greenhouses with orchids standing side by side in long rows like in any garden center. No explanations were given - if you were lucky, you could find the botanical name near the plant.... More

Super helpful and friendly staff. A dazzling array of orchids and the chance to buy rare and unusual varieties. They do serve refreshments in area of the garden, although we weren't successful in finding it. Oh well, it gives us a reason to go back.

The boss and I walked up and up and up a very steep hill, and up some more, but couldn't fine the place, even though there is a sign at the very bottom of the hill. That was the only sign though. When we finally gave up and descended, we were told by locals that the gardens were no longer... More
