Set within the magnificent Palheiro Estate and lying adjacent to the five-star Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro – a Relais & Châteaux property – the 18-hole, par 72 Championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation. At nearly 500 m (1640 ft) above sea level, the location is blessed with dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Nestling below just 10 minutes away is Funchal, the island’s capital. Designed by renowned golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, this picturesque layout with year-round appeal takes full advantage of Madeira’s hilly terrain, with abrupt ridges and deep valleys providing a compelling challenge for even the most seasoned golfer.Teeing off here is to walk through a verdant and tranquil 200-year-old country estate, and an abundance of fragrant, exotic flora lends the course a unique and singular quality.

It's high above the town and not the greatest condition but it's a challenge and has some stunning views . Hire a buggy as very tough walking . Some very interesting holes - and some very tight ones too . Very pleasant halfway house worth a try . All good value and pleasant staff .

It's not long but my goodness is it tricky with lots of sloping fairways and greens that are difficult to stop the ball on. Whilst we were there the weather pattern change very quickly wit sunshine one minute and then cloud and rain the next so be prepared……. We weren’t! Give it a go it’s good fun!

Lovely course, can be a little unfair with a lot of slopping fairways, I recommend getting a buggy walking's fine but gets harder the closer you get to home, so the game can suffer, take a camera the views are great, and most importantly enjoy

The staff including pro shop, golf course and restaurant all very helpful. The sights from the balcony outside club house (over Funchal) are fabulous. Whether a golfer or a tourist, it is well worth visit. If playing golf, allow 5 hours

Challenging but lovely views. For our stay the weather was lovely, not too hot,not too cold. Mind the seventeenth! Very hilly, use a cart and use the advise in the course planner. Thoroughly loved the course.

Good variety of holes without being too demanding. Fairways in need of some repair, but that did not spoil play. Greens fast but in very good condition. Excellent views and surroundings. Excellent staff doing all they can to help, indeed going out of their way to help. Enjoyable day, and I shall return.

The Palheiro Golf course often has good weather, even when santa Do serra is in the clouds. The course used to be bordered by lots of big trees, but since a fire In August 2013 damaged many of them have been taken down. It makes for fantastic views! Be prepared for lots of ups and downs, my Fitbit registered 90... More

My wife and I played 3 times during the first 2 weeks of sept. The course was in pretty good condition and we found it very enjoyable once we had learnt where to play your shots too. The only problem was the lazy sods who do not bother to rake the bunkers after their shots! The ladies at the reception... More
