Review of: Nuns Valley
Caught bus to Nuns Valley, had coffee at La Perle Cafe, lovely views, great Pastel da Nata (custard tart) and coffee/tea. Great ride back to Funchal with some spectacular views and narrow roads, very good bus drivers.

An excellent day out climbing high in the mountain range (by minibus) and then a 12klm walk to the 25 springs. Favio our guide was exceptional, full of knowledge, interested in each of us, often humourous and very protective of health and safety. Great scenery there and back and of course along the walk itself. Favio drove back a different way so that we could inspect the cliffs along the south coast. An exhilirating day and very good value for money. Go local and don't get sucked in by the 'special' deals which are linked to time shares.

We used PoM for a West tour with Felipe who took us to many places stopping for just the right amount of time at each spot. He drove very carefully and comfortably. On another day we had Fernando take us to mimosa levada. Not as careful a driver but ok and he told us a lot about the flora as we did our walk which took nearly 3 hours for 6.5 km. Finally 25 euro paid for a transfer to airport.

Review of: East Tour
Chose from west tour, east tour, southwest tour, nun’s valley tour - 8 hrs. ea. At office, 22euros cash requested, no maps available. Ask when reserving re languages of group/size party. East tour - pick up/drop off prompt - 9-5. Guide, Alex, professional, calm, informative, & patient with group of 7 in 8 seat mini van (back row claustrophobic). Do not want large bus on Madeira’s windy narrow roads. Luckily, tour presented in English only. Group disembarks on own at sites to explore on own after Alex offers overviews. Bathrooms at most, not all stops. Sites very modest - a small, unpretentious island, remember. Still lovely to see with added enjoyment of Alex’s daylong commentary re Maderia’s abundant flowers, fruits, trees, & vegetation as well as history of island. Lunch with group (a la carte reasonable 9euros/$10) or on own. Pleasure of day depends on quality of guide/ cordiality of group. Take water. Take jacket! Although sunny/hot in hotel area, possible windy/cool/rainy as you ascend.
