After the fabulous ride up to Monte in the cable car, the Tropical Garden is just a short step away. It is a truly magical place, filled with spectacular plants, gorgeous landscaping, a beautiful lake with swans and waterfalls (reminded me of Rivendell in LOTR), grottoes, sculptures, ponds of koi carp, a museum of gemstones, tile panels showing the history... We loved this place. You can take the cable car up from the water's edge or do as we did and use the local bus service. The layout is excellent and there are well landscaped areas. It covers a large area and has many steps and steep sections, so perhaps problematic for some. You pass tiled panels on the walk... More

The entrance to the gardens are just to the left as you get off the cable car. Well worth the time to visit and worth the 10€ entrance fee. Plenty of shade. Very steep terrain in areas therefore probably not the easiest of places to get around if you have mobility problems. The views over Funchal are gorgeous and from... More

Went to the Botanical Gardens at the beginning of our trip to Madeira, and although they were certainly lovely, the Palace Gardens were simply stunning!! Go early in the morning, as soon as they open and go the museum at the top near the cablecar at the end of your visit! It's nicer to walk around the gardens when there... More

Well worth a visit. The gardens were lovely with so much to see. Lots of little pathways to wander around, tress, plants, ponds, waterfalls - lovely. And a place to stop and have a drink and look out over Funchal. Fab!

We rode up on the cable car and it is a very short walk to the gardens. We spent about 2 hours walking round and enjoying the gardens which is a nice alternative to the sea aspect of the island. There are good food and drink facilities.

Well worth a visit anytime but certain plants are obviously seasonal, so different attractions. On the side of the hill so prepare for some serious walking if you want to see it all - would not recommend flip-flops!

Spent a few hours wondering around these gardens. Although a bit steep in places it is certainly worth a visit. Go at your own pace and enjoy the beautiful setting and views
