Nice well maintained gardens with beautiful views back down over Funchal. Has a cafe.
I don't know if it was just the time of the year we visited but we were disappointed . However, it's only €6 per Adult so if you are a garden enthusiast it's worth a look.
Do wear walking shoes as a lot of the footpaths are a sharp slate which is very hard to walk on.
Also, if like us you had previously taken the cable car you can instead take the bus. We took the 31A and it brings you right up to the garden and it's only €1.90 each way
Nice gardens but if your time is limited and you can only do one garden I would recommend the Gardens at Monte

We had a lovely time visiting the gardens we got the bus up approximately 4 euros for 2 and that was an adventure in itself. Dropped off at the top of the gardens and museum which were lovely and definitely worth 6 euros. We spent 2-3 hours wandering around then had a beer at the cafe whilst enjoying the view of Funchal then we steadily ! walked back down the hill . A brilliant day out Madeira is just beautiful 🤩

Beautiful gardens with a very interesting African museum. It’s 12.50 euros each but we spent about 2 hours in there wandering and finding paths through the exotic plants, water features and small caves. There are many photo opportunities on bridges and by plants. There was a fantastic viewing point for watching the basket sledges pass by. The ticket includes a free sample of Madeira wine in the cafe at the far side of the gardens where there are toilets and a view point. At the cafe the small birds are so friendly and they were eating out of our hands. We were surrounded by nature. It was fantastic. We travelled to it in a cable car and from it in a basket then had lunch in Funchal centre. It was a fine morning out. One to remember.

We were undecided whether to visit the Botanical Gardens or the Tropical Gardens as we climbed in the cable car from Funchal towards Monte. Having thought that the Botanical Gardens were one of Madeira’s top attractions, we paid the additional 35 euros for two, to access the second cable car to the gardens. Upon arrival you are greeted by some tacky souvenir shops before entering the gardens proper and there was a sign apologising for works due to replacement irrigation system. Our first steps into the garden were unimpressive: dry borders, and no lush planting. We must be in the “desert” area, I thought. Winding down trip-hazard pathways with missing cobbles the planting was very dull. We arrived at the rose garden, which I thought would be a riot of colour and scent, only the discover leafless stems and an abundance of dead-heading that needed doing, but clearly no one cared. We wandered round the rest of the garden feeling very disappointed. The viewpoints overlook the main motorway, so not a tranquil place to sit and enjoy the view. The whole place just felt unloved and untended. Such a shame and a total waste of time and money.

Went to the botanical gardens via 2 cable cars both paid for at the terminal in Funchal which included the entrance fee to the botanical garden. Read reviews saying not worth going to but I don’t think they could have been garden lovers because we thought it was very good. Lots of different areas showing different types of plants. Not completely manicured but certainly seemed well looked after to us. Maybe was run down in the pandemic but seems fine now. The views from the top were amazing. Loved the topiary garden, the cactus and succulents and obviously the carpet bedding tapestry area. Unfortunately the cafe food wasn’t so good, stale bread on the sandwich and very tasteless quiche, but the custard tart was excellent. Apart from that would recommend, including the very high cable car ride.

Usually city botanical gardens are free and for the €6 entry I was very disappointed. Paths were closed and vast areas dug up and covered in workers and plastic pipes. There was a cafe in the centre and the minimum spend to pay by card was €15, so without cash I couldn't even sit down for a cup of tea and cake

There is a tropical garden in Funchal, entry about €12, which is absolutely amazing. Go to that instead.

We last visited 2018. Everything seems tired, in need of attention, colourless, rundown and frankly forgotten.
All borders, the main and advertised patterned section, the pathways (half closed) all crumbling and loose? The cactus and succulent area continues to be outstanding, but if people are paying significant money to cable car down then they need to buck up.
Covid (as always) seems to be an excuse, but the gardens in Funchal and even our 3 star hotel are more colourful and apparently better cared for. Not good enough.

Lovely gardens with splendid views over bay of Funchal. Costs 6 euro to enter, you can reach by cable car from Monte, but as we have been on cable car before we decided to take the bus 31 from town, which stops at entrance.
The gardens are lovely there are quite a few hills to negotiate like most places in Madeira, there is large cacti garden, sadly many of them have been vandalised with people scratching their names on them.
There is a tea room, for snacks which was good and nearby clean toilets.
We went on a Sunday morning and it was fairly quiet, but as we were leaving around noon there were queues to enter.

Spent a couple of hours exploring the Botanical Gardens which were very pleasant. The multicoloured choreographed plants are what everyone comes for but we really enjoyed the cacti and succulents. However, if you only have time for one garden in Madeira I would recommend the Monte Palace garden. We found free parking on the street outside which saved us the cable car fare.

A bit underwhelming. Needed some attention. Quite overgrown with weeds in some places and not the vast numbers of tropical specimens we expected. Cable down from Monte is quite spectacular but you need a head for heights and it is quite windy. We paid for a return ticket but don't as you finish the gardens at the bottom and it is a long drag back up the hill to the cable car and then another uphill 10 min walk to the Monte cable car to get back down. Just have a one way trip and there is a bus at the exit to the gardens - beware of the taxi drivers hanging around at the exit who will over charge to get you back to town
