- David DDevon, United Kingdom27,006 contributionsWorth visiting this large MarketFriday 8th September and we walked around this historic market in the centre of Funchal. It marks the start of the Zona Velha, Old Town. This iconic building opened on the 24th November 1940. Since then, the Mercado dos Lavradores has been part of the everyday life of Funchal. The market has stalls over two floors, a mezzanine floor overlooking the open plaza below. There are numerous stalls which are laden with neatly tall piles of fruits and vegetables with bunches of herbs and spices dangling from beams. One of the most famous features of the Market are the flower sellers on their colourful traditional costumes. Another notable feature are the large tile panels near the front entrance and near the fishmongers. We were intending to visit the fish area but as we approached the smell was overpowering so we retreated. There is also a meat market here. Have read some other reviews that considered the Market to be expensive and that scammers were at work here. We had no problems as we just walked around enjoying the atmosphere, we bought nothing and we did not buy or sample anything.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 5, 2023
- steph cLondon, United Kingdom80 contributionsColorful but not cheap.Colorful but not cheap. Vast array of dried fruits and nuts. I bought 100 grams of dried hibiscus. Sugary, but no aroma of the flower came through. Don’t miss the attractive open air cafe on the top floor. There is a lift.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 24, 2024
- tinkle_24Northampton, United Kingdom1,781 contributionsWorth a visit especially on Saturdays!Amazing colours of exotic fruit in this market. Expensive but vendors often allow you to sample for free. On Saturdays, farmers come to sell their produce and that makes it a proper market. Fish section has seen better days with under half the stalls being occupied. However still plenty to see especially the local scabbard fish.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 9, 2024
- Steve_Grant1Oldham, United Kingdom1,772 contributionsMarket HallThis is a typical Market hall. Make sure that you visit at the right time of day as later on the market can be closing or even closed down for the day. Look out for the blue tile murals at the entrances. If you come out of the front entrances of the market hall then turn left and shortly there is a lane with restaurants etc with many decorated front doors.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 23, 2024
- Michael KStockport, United Kingdom340 contributionsLovely building with wide variety of market stallsFor me this was one of the highlights of Funchal. A beautiful 1937 Art Deco building housing lots of different market stalls, some in an open courtyard with trees, others on a first floor balcony running round the building. Fish market at the rear with the famous scabbard fish on view. When we first visited Tuesday teatime it was quiet and most of the stalls had packed up, when we went back on the Friday morning it was heaving with activity and dozens of colourful and varied stalls. We didn’t need any fresh produce, maybe as well in view of what other reviewers have said about rip off prices for tourists, but we did buy one or two gifts from some of the traders.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 29, 2024
- Chris K2 contributionsBuyer beware.Brilliant place to visit and photograph. Plenty of local fruit and vegetables and flowers all beautifully displayed. The fish market is amazing. Be careful when buying passion fruit etc. they will drop a load of less fresh fruit in the bag before they weigh it . All of a sudden you have more than you thought and some of the quality will be not so good, take care.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 5, 2024
- Rosie WWilland, United Kingdom12 contributionsBusy market with hidden gem cafeThe market is fascinating on a Friday, buzzing with activity and sellers flogging everything from fruit and veg, fish, cork bags etc. Friday is definitely a busier day to come to see it at its best. Glad we saw the reviews, and didn’t accept to try any of the goods and just walked through with no hassle. The cafe on the top floor (stairs but I think lift available) is delightful and definitely the highlight of the market.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 12, 2024
- langstroth2Fleet, United Kingdom62 contributionsWorth a look around - but Don’t buyWorth a look around for the sights and smells (if you go in the fish market next door). Don’t buy any fruit or get tempted by the offers of free samples, you will be ripped off. There’s plenty of small shops nearby in Funchal selling it cheaper. There were however some good stalls selling belts etc, that were reasonably priced.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 16, 2024
- Andrew DNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom23 contributionsLook, don't buy - it's a tourist trap! The Market is worth a visit for the colourful displays of fruit and flowers. Also for coffee and handmade chocolates at a little chocolatier in the south east corner. But beware the sharp saleswomen tempting you with tasters of exotic fruit! We were charged €16.50 for one small dragon fruit and four fresh dates stuffed with a half-walnut. A real tourist trap - best enjoyed with your eyes only!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024
- 123pixFalmouth, United Kingdom565 contributionsColourful & vibrant marketVery colourful displays of produce, lots of people and a great atmosphere. We entered by walking through the fish market then carried on into the areas selling fruit, veg and local goods. There are 2 upper floors with a restaurant at the top. Actually only ended up buying a tea towel, but it was great to see everything.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 30, 2024

Madeira is a beautiful place to visit and so is this market but be very careful in the fruit market as they have a scam in place for tourists!
They will tempt you with the beautiful colours, smells and tastes of the fruit but once you reach the cash register and pay it’s a different story. We asked for 1 or 2 items and ended up being fleeced out of €35 for a small bag of fruit. Not only that but they also have a trick they play by distracting you, whilst they swap the nice looking fruit they picked for you out of the bag once your back is turned, or simply look to be getting you a blue carrier bag from behind the desk when they are actually swapping your fruit for cast offs and rotten items. See the 2 pictures below for what was offered and was was in the bag.
As we were on a cruise we had no change of returning it so be aware. Just look but don’t buy.
We won’t fall for it again, and hope people reading this don’t too.

It is like a lot of other people wrote here,we should have read the reviews before visiting. We had exactly the same story, They distract you in all possible ways, and in the end you get a rediculous price. Because my wife speaks portugese she was able to protest; with as a result a reduction of half the price...which was still a totall ripoff. If the funchal government is serious about taking care of the tourists, they should stop this totall scam!!. so, if you want to go there, please LOOK BUT DO NOT BUY

This is a beautiful building but has been spoilt by catering to tourists so no longer a real market for the locals. I imagine early mornings may be more authentic when the fish market is in full swing but by the time we arrived late morning it was very disappointing. All the produce was overpriced and vendors wouldn't leave you alone to browse. A lot of the stalls sold similar items. Worth a visit for the architecture but not for a genuine shopping experience. A real shame as we always purchase local produce when we travel - but not here when it can be purchased cheaper at home.

watch out for fruit sellers who push passion fruit to try. prices are overpriced several times. the quality of purchased fruit is low. much worse than what they give to try. is a typical tourist trap. just for money. a shame for this market that allows this behavior. they are not sellers, but tricksters of tourists. only buy from normal stalls not on the sides of the lech in the middle of the market square. they are not always. The hustlers are all day on the right side of the entrance in the city and in fruit shops prices 4-5 times lower. be careful don't get fooled. shame for this market and madeira for these scam vendors

Half of the stalls are closed, most likely a consequence of covid but really small and boring. A few tat shops, one with madeira, fruit stalls, fish, flowers. As everyone has said here cheaper elsewhere and in particular fruit sellers rude and pushy. One even started ranting at me did I not speak - I refrained from saying no not to idiots that shout at me and try ramming fruit at me.....

Should have read Trip Advisor reviews 1st. Totally ripped off today 13.03.20. Foolishly paid 52euros for bag of exotic fruits, on returning to my hotel found most of it was rotten. I will be returning the fruit to the stall holder upstairs. He should be ashamed of the bad reputation he is bringing to other stall holders at Mercado dos Lavradores.

There are other reviews telling the same story. I wish I had read them before buying a very overpriced bag of fruit. It was sold to us as delicious and local. We were encouraged to try everything. It turned out that the delicious passion fruit must have had sugar added. They cut them in half add sugar, stir it up and then place an amount on the back of your hand. It is nothing like what you think you have bought. Be very careful. Get a price for each single fruit. Don’t let them make a bag of various things up and then get a horrible total price. Better still go somewhere else.

It had been 25 years since we last visited Madeira and the Fish market. It has changed there are now eating places in the complex, plus other market stalls. We were invited to taste a pineapple banana fruit which was delicious, the stall holder tried to get me to buy, but at 15 euros for 1 fruit very steep, eventually came down to 11 euros, we did not purchase, this was at the end of trading on a Saturday. Expected to get a better deal. The young women was verging on rude when I did not purchase at 11 euros.
You need to go to the fish market early in the morning if you want to see it at its best

I should have read all the reviews before going. Do NOT go. I was very much looking forward to going and trying new fruits, etc from the region. It is a scam. If you check Google reviews, you will see posts with a photo of the guy we ended up being scammed by. He would not let us look at the fruit. He insisted on giving us samples. All great, sweet mangoes, dragon fruits, etc. BUT, when I went to put some in a bag, he said he must do it and he would give us one of everything we tried. NOPE, the bag rang up at $30 euros and when we checked the bag later, only 4 HORRIBLE sour passion fruits in the bag. Nothing else. He was slick and we fell for it. Yes, our mistake for being trusting. Learn from our mistake and do not go. We also bought “fresh” pressed juice upstairs from two ladies who were all smiles and pushy to buy the drinks. We bought two… $7 and they were completely diluted with ice and were horrible. Again, scammed. Very sad and disappointing. Now that I have read so many reviews and other information about this place, plus speaking with our hosts, I’m shocked that the city hasn’t come in and cleaned it up as it gives Madeira a bad name. Perhaps they hope to scam all the cruise tourists? Who knows. Learn from us and stay away.

is there any places in the market that cook seafood?

No. Nearby are many restaurants in a re developed part of old Funchal. You will find plenty of choice along the narrow street that runs up to the fort at Santa Maria.
