A note on the gate states that due to reasons related to the inspection of stone elements, the museum will be closed from 2nd August until further notice.

At the moment the basement floor is closed. Tickets for the house are 1.50€ and I think we were most impressed with how extensive the first floor was, with lovely Chippendale furniture and some very nice pictures in a calm grand setting. The garden was a lovely place to eat our sandwiches and after lunch we walked up to the... More

In the Santa Clara district of Funchal, several historic features compete for your limited timeline attention, and each arguably has some merit. Returning to the area to complete our exploration, we wandered around the garden at lunchtime. There seems to be a modern art exhibition when we visited, but the house and exhibition were getting ready for their midday siesta,... More

We walked over and up to see this from the Old Town. I guess at Euro3 you don't expect too much and nor should you, unless you love your furniture and silver? Yes, its quaint but lacking any atmosphere for me. OK, perhaps we have seen a lot better back in the UK or on travels but it is a... More

The inside is quite interesting. There is also a nice garden and the place has also a small coffee bar

I visited this museum as it was near our holiday rental property and was pleasantly surprised. There was a cloakroom at the reception desk with a friendly lady. The museum was very well maintained with fully restored interiors which were impressive. The history of Funchal was narrated highlighting the effects of the colonial powers of Europe (The houses of Hapsburg... More

Arrived in the middle of the extended lunch break, so spent some time viewing the gardens which have some nice architectural fragments and an orchid house which must be beautiful in season. The house itself is quite uncluttered and almost austere, representing the English eighteenth century style transported to a foreign setting. The unexpected highlight was the wonderful silverware collection... More

This museum is a few hundred metres uphill from the Frederico de Freitas Museum and is is nearly as good . Again it it is a private house that has been restored to show a collection of furnitue and art from the 15 to the 20 th centuries. The main difference is that it is not one man's own home... More

This gallery concentrates on the work of two local brothers and shows examples of their work. Over years we have been there four or five times and it has always been enjoyable. But beware it does close for lunch
