The majority of the museum must have been closed as all that we could see were fish in tanks, which were far too small for the fish and a room with a huge panel display which was way to boring to read to be honest. Not impressed at all, if you want to spend 10 minutes in a hot building then this is the place!

We visited in late May 2019 and found the museum was shut for refurbishment but we were allowed to look around the aquarium for free. I hope that too will be updated, the tanks were rather small - a large grouper had very little space and was just drifting dismally in its tank. The lighting is very low which is presumably a good thing for the creatures but it made it quite tricky to walk around.

We visited the museum, for the first time, towards the end of our 5th visit to Madeira. Having walked a lot of the island and explored the coast and inland, including many levadas, on numerous occasions, it was great to see so much of the local flora, fauna and sea life collected, displayed and identified in one place. We could refer back to so much of what we’ve seen and heard ourselves - a great reference point. It was also really interesting to find out about Günther Maul, whose work was so central to developing the knowledge, understanding and awareness of the local nature and science. Yes, the displays are rather tired and old fashioned, but where is the funding needed to update and modernise things? The aquarium was a little disappointing too but it’s not really the central feature.

Very old building. At least for the wooden floor and stairs. Great collection. Some need a little bit of conservation. But it is a unique collection. I was lucky to have the temporary exhibition and look into the man who did almost all the collection. The aquarium is very dark and have few species but it is ok. I don’t hunk they have an elevator, but I am not sure. A lot of stairs to visit the main exhibition.

Very reasonably priced. The displays were a little dated but quite a few natural history museums I have been to are. There was lots of information and it was busy with school groups doing research. The aquarium could do with being upgraded and I agree with other reviewers about the tank sizes being too small for some of the larger fish. Perhaps if they charged a slightly more expensive entrance fee it could help towards an update.
