Beautiful cathedral ,In the process of renovations but this is necessary and does not impinge upon the glory of the building .Please remember that this is a place of worship and not just a tourist hot spot .When i was at mass with my husband and went to light candles i was appalled by the inappropriate behaviour of some of the tourists during mass .They were speaking over the priest and as the congregation were praying they seemed oblivious to their lack of manners in a religious environment .I was embarrassed as a foreign national .The locals seem to be resigned to it but we found it pretty awful. Please be respectful and quiet it may not be everyones "thing" .However if someone is in there having a look around during mass some respect does not go amiss.I visit every year and this is not just a one off incident it is very much ongoing .

Unfortunately, as many of the other reviewers have said the interior is shrouded in scaffolding and plastic in order to carry out much needed renovations to the interior roof and surrounding areas. We were able to wander around inside but were unable to view the full majesty of the interior. Perhaps next time.

Well worth a visit. I did not find the renovation work too intrusive. Certainly a nice place to stop, sit down and take life easy or contemplate as you will.

Really fascinating, despite the scaffolding and sheeting. You can't get a good view of the ceiling but you can see a glimpse of how spectacular it is. You can see most of the perimeter inside. It's a shame about the building work, but it's still worth a visit as it's in the middle of Funchal.

Unfortunate that scaffolding & builders were present & will be for some time I guess. Mass still on but in small ( & outside ) chapel.

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Madeira and as part of today’s Walking Tour of Old Funchal (see separate Review) we visited the Cathedral - one of the local landmarks.

It’s certainly a most impressive building but - due to ongoing restoration work (extensive scaffolding) - it was simply not possible to see the inside of the Cathedral. Thus my relatively rating which will have to remain in place until our next visit to the Island!!

Wednesday 9th June and we were  sightseeing and exploring in Funchal. No visit to the City would be complete with without a visit to this magnificent Cathedral in it's centre.

Disappointingly at the time of our visit most of the interior and ceiling was covered in plastic sheeting and scaffolding, major works, repairs or refurbishment underway.

Despite the repair work we able to walk around and admire the beauty of the ornate shrines and small altars around the walls of the Cathedral.

The main altar was also on show with all it's splendour with its 15 panels adorned with religious images and figures. It is so elaborate and stretches up to the decorated ceiling, stunning.

In the courtyard of the Cathedral there is a statue of Pope John Paul II, to commemorate his visit in 1991. There is a small Shrine on one of the side altars in honour of his Holiness.

When we went mid May the ceiling was totally covered which I understand is the cathedrals main selling point! Whilst it would have been nice to see the rest of the cathedral is still nice to walk through.

Having reached these heights, take a quiet moment to visit this church, which is lovely inside. The steps in front are numerous, so take deep breath first!
Inside the church is very decorative, and separate ways in and out are marked out.
When we were there the nativity scene was still in place - very well done.

While this is the most important religious building in Madeira it is unfortunately undergoing restoration so there isn't much to see. A shame but still worth popping in if walking by as the alter is impressive. Otherwise not worth a special trip right now.
