Wednesday 13th September we were walking about sightseeing and exploring in Funchal.
No visit to the City is complete without a visit and walk about this historic Square.
It is surrounded by some beautiful old buildings including the 18th century Town Hall, the 17th century Church of Saint John the Evangelist and the Museum of Sacred Art located in the Episcopal Palace.
In 2020 the old Jesuit College of Funchal became the rectory of the University of Madeira.
The central section of the square is pedestrianised and paved. The black and white tiles form a pattern of over-lapping circles. It has also be referred to as a wave pattern.
At the heart of the Square is the tall obelisk like structure that is the fountain, Charfariz da Praca do Municipio.
It is a rather enchanting area of the City

This is one of the biggest squares in Funchal so it provides an unusual amount of open space to give you a perspective. You will find City Hall here as well as a large church.

It is one of the most beautiful town halls I have ever seen.
It is very well maintained. The square in front of it also looks great!
