It is an impressive statue in the downtown of Funchal just across the Banco Do Portugal building. It honours the achievements of João Gonçalves Zarco, who was one of the discoverers of Madeira in 1419.

This chap (b1390 – d1471) gained recognition for the Madeiran Islands where he established settlements with his mates from 1425. He died in Funchal and this statue is a short distance from cathedral on (funnily enough) Av. Zarco, near Municipal Gardens and alongside the historic Bank of Portugal building. Enough said!!

In the historic center of Funchal is a statue memorializing Joao Gonçalves Zarco, the sea captain who discovered Madeira in the early 15th century. The historic center is fine place to walk along and visit the statue, the cathedral, and other period buildings.

Zarco was a knight at the service of Prince Henry, the Navigator's household.
He led the caravels that discovered the island of Porto Santo in 1418 to 1419 and afterward, the island of Madeira 1419 to 1420.
His statue stands close to Se Cathedral, the Municipal Garden, The Ritz.

An important statue right in the middle of downtown. We could not miss it as we did our walk around the center of town. It is well created.

You will notice this big statue as you wander through the center of the old town. We saw it on our way to lunch. Impressive in size and style.

It is a nice monument to the man who discovered Madeira and was the first governor there. They located it perfectly.

In Avenida Zarco (where else?) is the statue of the man who discovered Madeira. This was started in 1927 by a sculptor, Francisco Franco. The government assigned the project to Franco along with an architect Cristino da Silva (who created the base). On the base figures represent Settlement, Conquest, Wisdom and Evangelization.
It was finally erected in 1934.
While you are walking by Avenida Arriaga/Avenida Zarco, stop and ponder why Funchal exists.

The statue in honour of João Gonçalves Zarco stands in the city centre of Funchal opposite the Portuguese bank and was inaugurated in 1940 during the military dictatorship by the pro-regime politician Fernão de Ornelas.
João Gonçalves Zarco, together with Tristão Vaz Teixeira and Bartolomeu Perestrelo, is considered the discoverer of Madeira (1419) and Porto Santo (1418). After Perestrelo was appointed governor of Porto Santo, Teixeira was granted Machico in Madeira in 1440 and Funchal a few years later.
João Gonçalves Zarco lived from c. 1380 to 1467.
