Our 2nd visit and just as enjoyable as the first. We knew roughly what we wanted - a 20 year Malvasia at €40, as we had bought a bottle previously. This time we decided to also try the 30 year Malvasia at €60. After taking a seat (we were the only people) a member of staff brought samples of the wines, plus another which he said was for blind testing. At first taste it was very good, but paled into comparison when we tried the other 2. It turned out to be a 2005. Anyway, we settled for the 30 year Malvasia! It's very well packed in a sturdy box for transporting safely back to the UK. Definitely worth a trip, and I also bought a wine glass - no point spending all that money on the wine and not using the correct glass. We will revisit next time we are there, without a doubt.

Unfortunately we couldn't do the tour as they were fully booked.
We were seated and given a list of the different wines available and the cost per glass. Unlike other wine tastings, you pay per glass. We explained to the lady the type of wine we were looking for and she fetched us a couple to try after explaining the differences between them. We sampled a 15 year old Bual and a 20 year old Malvasia. DH preferred the Bual whereas I preferred the Malvasia, and seeing as I drink it more than DH we got the Malvasia, although the lady thought we would choose the Bual. When we paid the lady very kindly didn't charge us for the samples we had had, despite us being more than happy to pay for them.
Bottle was well packed in a very solid box which meant we got it home in one piece packed into the middle of our suitcase. Would certainly go back and hopefully do the tour and next time DH will be buying the Bual!!!
A definite treat to enjoy at home while reminiscing over Funchal :)
Forget the rest, with their free samples. Visit HM Borges.

Most cruise passengers (and indeed most tourists seem to do likewise) seem to go to the wine lodge nearest to the cruise terminal. However it is worth walking the extra 10 minutes to this wine lodge. Lovely setting. Friendly staff who helped guide you through their wines and in particular what order to taste them. Not a wine connoisseur but all the wines we tasted were excellent and very reasonably priced to buy

Great selection of wines to try, either by the glass or in a package deal. Tasting wasn’t rushed and Melissa was very friendly, chatty and helpful. Madeira was very nice and very reasonably priced for the quality so ended up buying more than planned. Highly recommended!

Situated on a busy main road, you can pop into this winery and taste an assortment of the Madeira wine they make on site. This ranges from the smooth year old young blend to the 30 year old complex liquor that knocks your socks off. Make sure you’ve eaten before you visit.

It doesn’t cost much to try the wines and they aren’t stingy when they pour. You can buy bottles of your favourite blend in the shop.

The Madeira produced here is of good quality. I like that the owners are from the same family with the company being passed down through generations.
You could chose a few Madeira’s of varying age or grape. We had 5 in total and shared a tasting glass. It was lovely wine. Next time we would like to do a tour of the winery to get to know how the wine is made.

We had a wonderful afternoon at HM Borges finding out about the history of Madeira wine in the oldest winery in Madeira! Melissa was our guide and was very welcoming and knowledgeable and generous with her time. The whole experience was fascinating. We then had a tasting session which was really excellent and bought some ‘noble grapes’ Madeira to take home. Great way to spend an afternoon in Funchal….highly recommended!

Wine tasting was a big part of my trip to Madeira and I visited Blandy’s, Pereira D’Oliveira, and Henriques e Henriques in addition to H.M. Borges. This was hands down the best experience I had, from the thorough explanations (I learned so much!) to the individual attention to the friendliness of everyone there. At the end I was even offered to come back later in the week for a tour of the facilities! I bought a 5 year Verdelho and a 10 year Malmsey — will have fond memories enjoying these wines. I can’t wait to bring my husband here for a tasting/tour someday.

We have friends who know more than us about wine and they stumbled upon this place and have returned to it. When we decided to visit Madeira I asked them where to go...and they heartily recommended this place. And I agree.

It’s a a little walk up from the touristy front and we probably wouldn’t have visited without our friends saying to come here.

Our host - part of of the Borges family - led us through the tastings and we tried 5/6 trying to find out what we liked and what we didn’t as we hadn’t tasted Madeira wine before. A mix of ages and different varieties were tasted.

We all ended up buying some wine to bring home.

When I get back to Madeira I’ll be coming back here.

Popped in to H M Borges for a tasting and found a hidden gem. Friendly and informative staff and a good range of all the styles available for tasting ( nominal charge ) Spent an enjoyable hour in a pleasant tasting room the only problem being which bottles to purchase to bring home.
