Most cruise passengers (and indeed most tourists seem to do likewise) seem to go to the wine lodge nearest to the cruise terminal. However it is worth walking the extra 10 minutes to this wine lodge. Lovely setting. Friendly staff who helped guide you through their wines and in particular what order to taste them. Not a wine connoisseur but all the wines we tasted were excellent and very reasonably priced to buy

Great selection of wines to try, either by the glass or in a package deal. Tasting wasn’t rushed and Melissa was very friendly, chatty and helpful. Madeira was very nice and very reasonably priced for the quality so ended up buying more than planned. Highly recommended!

We went today (Thursday) to see about a tour only to find out it’s only on Mondays/Wednesdays and Fridays. This information is not on their website where it says come and see us as we are open Monday to Friday. We did do a wine tasting and you can select the ones you want to try, small fee for each one. This was unhurried and you could ask any questions you wanted. I’d like to return for the tour so hope the website is updated to explain the tour and be able to book online to.

The Madeira produced here is of good quality. I like that the owners are from the same family with the company being passed down through generations.
You could chose a few Madeira’s of varying age or grape. We had 5 in total and shared a tasting glass. It was lovely wine. Next time we would like to do a tour of the winery to get to know how the wine is made.

Excellent experience! Following advice from other reviewers online I eschewed the obvious alternatives and climbed the hill to Borges.
Unlike other places this felt less of a tourist trap (there were 3 cruise ships in that day and the places nearer the seafront were packed).
Extremely friendly informed service made the whole experience a pleasure. Tasted 5 amazing wines before buying 2 of the 20 year old Malvasia and 2 of the astounding 2015 tinta negra.
Excellent packaging means I am very confident they will survive the flight in checked luggage.

We had a wonderful afternoon at HM Borges finding out about the history of Madeira wine in the oldest winery in Madeira! Melissa was our guide and was very welcoming and knowledgeable and generous with her time. The whole experience was fascinating. We then had a tasting session which was really excellent and bought some ‘noble grapes’ Madeira to take home. Great way to spend an afternoon in Funchal….highly recommended!

Wine tasting was a big part of my trip to Madeira and I visited Blandy’s, Pereira D’Oliveira, and Henriques e Henriques in addition to H.M. Borges. This was hands down the best experience I had, from the thorough explanations (I learned so much!) to the individual attention to the friendliness of everyone there. At the end I was even offered to come back later in the week for a tour of the facilities! I bought a 5 year Verdelho and a 10 year Malmsey — will have fond memories enjoying these wines. I can’t wait to bring my husband here for a tasting/tour someday.

We have friends who know more than us about wine and they stumbled upon this place and have returned to it. When we decided to visit Madeira I asked them where to go...and they heartily recommended this place. And I agree.

It’s a a little walk up from the touristy front and we probably wouldn’t have visited without our friends saying to come here.

Our host - part of of the Borges family - led us through the tastings and we tried 5/6 trying to find out what we liked and what we didn’t as we hadn’t tasted Madeira wine before. A mix of ages and different varieties were tasted.

We all ended up buying some wine to bring home.

When I get back to Madeira I’ll be coming back here.

Popped in to H M Borges for a tasting and found a hidden gem. Friendly and informative staff and a good range of all the styles available for tasting ( nominal charge ) Spent an enjoyable hour in a pleasant tasting room the only problem being which bottles to purchase to bring home.
