I was looking for things to review in Funchal which I might have missed. After spending about 6 weeks here, I had gathered a lot of knowledge.

I am not too sure what this topic is really about, as Funchal (and Madeira), is all historic. If the topic is addressing old town then this is where I will go with it.

As far as I can ascertain, old town is from the Ave. do Mar north to about Rue do Bom Jesus. Then from Ave. Calouste Gulbenkian east to Rue do Aspirante Mota Freitas (give or take a few streets). There, this is my definition.

We walked this area most days. It is full of small shops specializing in shoes, clothes, hardware, kitchen stuff, and almost anything else that you could think of (yes, that too).

There are also many fascinating roads and sidewalks done in that classical Portuguese black and white stone. Some are truly amazing.

On every block, you will probably find a bakery, bar and/or restaurant. The prices are generally okay. However, this is very touristy and maybe for a better, less expensive meal, head up to around the Forum.

Santa Maria Street with its incredible doors is part of this area and really worthwhile.

We spent so much time here wondering through shops, parks, churches and just generally site seeing. Take a stroll around and don’t forget to look down.

The historic centre is a great place to wonder round - lots of very interesting architecture, streets clean and can find lots of activity and restaurants if you wish my choosing certain streets - otherwise some of the back streets are nice and quiet and good to just wonder round in the evenings.

Funchal´s Old Town is known to locals as Zona Velha. It is a picturesque setting of narrow cobblestone streets lined by aged buildings with some dating back to the 15th century. An area that is full activities with a variety of shops, bars and restaurants.
We walked the entire length of the Old City and Historic Center. It was certainly a lot of fun and we enjoyed seeing the painted buildings and painted doors all by local painters. It is an easy walk so take your time and watch out for breaks in the cobblestones.

A visit to the historic centre is a nice place for a stroll. We were on a cruise and walked up from the harbour, past CR7s statue, into a small park. past a monument , a nice roundabout then you are there. There are the municipal gardens on your left , restaurants, the Bank area with is statue and the Church. Pleasant recommended.

Attractive town, everywhere walkable traffic can be bad. Plenty of places to eat and drink but best avoided if the cruise ships in.

The historical center of Funchal is really beautiful, be it the churches, cathedrals, banks, governmental offices, squares, and even the street surfaces (mosaic like). And the side streets too, e.g. Rua Carreira at night with its restaurants and 19th century buildings and street lighting.

Apparently it once was a city itself, it's now an area of picturesque streets, with handcraft shops set up in small houses where families used to live. Really it's a must to see if in the area.

This is my favorite area in Madeira, the absolute center of the old town, full of life and things to see. Great places to eat and drink. Quite a few tourist spots. Go tasting!
