This is not a Madeira tasting tour in the strictest sense as you are not visiting the wine lodge as you do for Blandy’s. It’s a cute oldy worldy shop for the lodge which offers free tastings in the hope you will buy.
It’s free and a fun way to while away 40 minutes.
We wandered in following a walk and were asked if we wanted to do a tasting. We were led to a barrel table where we were given 3 different Madeira’s to try from sweet to dry.
Having visited a few lodges I know each wine producer has their own methods and style so no one Madeira is the same and it’s always worth trying a different producer.

Pereira D'Oliveira feels like a very traditional company and this was reflected in the Madeira. Although we generally like a medium dry Madeira, here our favourite was the Medium Sweet which tasted like Christmas cake & dark fruits.
They will package bottles for you for flying-we bought one bottle I think it was around €13. Packaging worked a treat - it was safe in our suitcase. Needless to say it’s already been drunk as we polished it off in about 3 sittings on our return to the uk.

We knew that when in Madeira, a wine tasting is a must. We were looking for a central and accessible place in Funchal and found Pereira d'Oliveira and we were totally blown away. One step in and you immediately get the right feeling - like if you were on a countryside in a vineyard. Second step in and you're served first tasting samples. Then second, and third...and you feel fantastic. You can taste as much as you want and you'll be served a traditional cake with your wine too. We were very surprised but the amount of wine that just keeps coming and tastes very delicious. If I could wish for an improvement I'd ask the staff to share more about the wine. During our visit, they were just coming and bringing tasting samples. If you don't go there to drink, but to find out more about the wine, you'll not be going home with much knowledge. In any way, we really did enjoy our visit and bought a few bottles of wine.

Great way to taste a range of d'Oliveira madeiria for free also had some Honey cake which was very tasty. we purchased a bottle of dry madeira and a Honey cake to take back to work. Also some sugar cane honey which is very dark for me to attempt to make honey cake for myself. They have a large range of madeira from many years - we were going to purchase one from 1953 for my husband but we could see it and it was very expensive so we decided against it.

I was looking forward to tasting some Madeira wine, but this place was very disappointing. Quite a large room, with lots of barrels used as tables, We had an idea of what we were looking for, but instead of asking us about preference we were served a glass each of 3 types of wine, all younger than what we preferred. This seems very wasteful as we didn't drink them, nor where we given any information about the different types. It felt very rushed despite there being only one other couple in the place. The samples are free, but with a bit more effort they would have got a sale. Instead we went to HM Borges, where we spent €40 on a decent bottle of Madeira wine.
If you are looking for a small 37cl bottle of 5 year old wine they do sell these for about the same price as the supermarket - €7.50 For something more upmarket, visit Borges which is about 5 minutes away.

Easy to find in Funchal town this is a great place to try the local tipple. It’s an impressive building with huge barrels and ancient bottles, we saw one dating back to 1850. Once confirmed that you are there for the tasting you are beckoned to a barrel table and the staff brought out 3 samples of Madeira wine. The medium dry and medium sweet 3 year old and a 5 year old sweet wine all served with the local Christmas style cake. There’s no pressure to buy, but many great souvenirs can be purchased. A visit here is an easy win for the wine lover.

And I dont mean the wine. We did arrive fairly early in the morning and with covid things are different but the staff seemed a little sombre with the manager making a fuss in front of us about sellotape....
We were offered samples almost immediately and tried 4 wines and cake. The lady quickly listened to our preference and provided accordingly.
We were also provided with a leaflet in English.
We bought a bottle of water to clear the palate as otherwise tasting is a little difficult.
Prices are fine and an excellent selection.

We decided to try Pereira d'Oliveria wine tasting having received a rather cold reception from Blandy's. What a difference. The staff were very accommodating and the premises pristine and clean especially as we arrived during Covid. We were invited to taste four different wines from various decades. The staff did not rush us and were there to answer any questions. They have a huge selection of gift boxes to take home. I would definitely add this stop to your list of 'must vist' in Funchal.

Brilliant attentive staff. Free tasting of the core range. Great building with all the bottles and barrels. Ask for something special to taste and you might get a pleasant surprise. I tasted a 1910 at £750

This is a fun place to visit, it's free and tasty... We had 4 different sampling of Madeira Wine. 3 years, 5 years 2 different type and last but not least 10 years. All of it was great. A nice way to spend some time in Maderia !!

Don’t bother if you’re interested in learning something about Madeira wine and taste different wines.
Very unfriendly staff that serves you 3 of their youngest wines (medium dry, medium sweet and sweet in our case).
No information, not even a simple word of friendliness.
We left and went to Borges, where we found what we were looking for.
