The Levada do Alecrim starts at the same point as the Levada do Risco and Levada das 25 Fontes. But it is less crowded and beatiful. Less crowded is a very good point to take into consideration, since the other two are almost imposible to do if not in the early morning (very early morning!). We started at 9:00 and made almost the entire way with people, which was great: you can ear the birds, the water, the silence of nature. In the end of the Levada you have two water falls and can take a bath if you want (very cold water). It is a relaxed walk because it it very flat, and you can take your kids if they can walk 7 kms. It is also perfect for hot days.

Amazing levada trip. We arrived quite late, around 3.pm, and were alone in the levada, that is the best thing ever, as the roads are very tiny and fits only one person. The hike is a nice walk, around 2 hours, with a fasctinating waterfall at the end. The whole hike is next to a nice levada, i had the feeling as i was in hobbit-land. Really really recommend it, as it is much less crowded as the other hike nearby.

I liked it because it was not that crowded.

It took is 50mins to get to the waterfall and 43 to come back, so a good walk but not too much

You have a lot of free parking at the beginning of the trail

You need good walking shoes because it has small rocks all the way and it can get uncomfortable if the sole is thin. Also when we were getting back it started raining and it can get a bit more slippery .

Elevation is virtually not there except a flight of stairs. I saw a lot of people with small kids, dogs and elderly people being comfortable all the way.

You have 3 viewpoints where you see the alley, pretty spots. The walking via the levada you walk in a tunnel of woods, I find that the prettiest part. Then at the end there are 2 waterfalls. The second one, that you see from above,I find is the prettiest.

Oh, and the road there is a steep mountain road, need a good car, but this is all the island. You can get into the cloud too. Or you can stop and see the surrounding scenery .

We combined this hike with the Risco and 25 Fontes levada walks. Alecrim is MUCH less populated with hikers. The parking location is the same location on road #110 at the top of the ridge that is used for the popular casa do Rabacal hikes. Highly recommended!

1. Walk ‘Alecrim’ because it’s less crowded than ‘Risco’ and ‘25 Fontes’, both starting at the same parking lot. ‘Alecrim’ is as beautiful and interesting as the two others, and the waterfall in the end is a little more spectacular.
2. ‘Alecrim’ is 6,8 km - out + back - and takes about 2 hours to walk in moderate pace, shooting a lot of pictures along the track.
3. ‘Alecrim’ is considered one of the easiest levadas - children and elderly people can do it without problems.
4. Wear trainers or walking shoes. Sticks are not needed.
5. Don’t be afraid of the sun - you walk in the shade of trees all the way.
6. Consider bringing bathing suit and towel if you feel like taking a shower in the (pretty cold) waterfall.
7. START EARLY, 9 AM or earlier! We started out at 9.15, there were only 5 cars at the parking lot. 1 hour later, on our way back from the waterfall, we met 60-70 people heading for the waterfall, some of them walking in big groups - and every time you meet a person on the narrow path, you have to step aside and wait (pretty annoying). Back at the parking lot more than 100 cars were parked, and all the time more were arriving.

Start 9-9.30, walk counterclockwise and you will avoid crowds. Walk to the source of the Levada do Alecrim which is a beautifull place, then retrace your steps to the descend to the Lagoa da Vento and then down to Rabacal. Here you can dwcide to either have a nice meal and head back or....which I would recommend , walk Levada 25 Fontes (at this time there will be crowds here but still well worth the effort) and the return back to Rabacal where you can take a ride up to the car park (3€). That took us 5hrs30min with lots of photos, rests, coffee and cakes and relaxing. If you want, you can do that all clockwise (avoiding crowds in 25Fontes) but that involves far more ascent. That was a GREAT DAY.

Really beautifull hike, it's relatively even which makes it an easy hike for most People. When you are at the end you have a beautifull waterfal which you can swim under. When walking back you have an option of going back the same way or taking allot of Steps down to another beautifull waterfall which you can walk bihind and make good pictures. This way is the harder way of going back. Would recomment this
