- ChatteringchatterEngland, United Kingdom5 contributionsFabulous family walkGo very early to avoid the tour group crowds! Rabacal down to Fontes 25, back up then across to Risco falls for a picnic. This is not a flat walk: many steps between the flat levada stretches. Paths in good condition and fenced. In all 8 miles of fabulous views, gorgeous scenery and clear air. This hike is best avoided at peak times; I don’t know how easily all the large groups would pass one another. Car park free. Shuttle bus optional down to start of trail but we walked it fine. Loos 50c. Bring lots water and footwear with decent tread. Enjoy it, we did.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 28, 2023
- TPAT75Oulu, Finland170 contributionsUse a guided to for this oneThis one is much more enjoyable to do with a guided tour because you’re not going to be there alone anyway and with a tour you have a huge added bonus. Instead of having to climb back up the same crowded path you can go through the 800 m tunnel (which is an experience in itself). After the tunnel there is a beautiful scenic view and a short hike to a different pick up point where the driver will be waiting for you. Believe me, it’s much more enjoyable to do it this way.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 16, 2024
- Ann CNashville, Tennessee3,336 contributions25 Fontes and Cascada da Risco5 stars if you go early...the experience would be very different if crowded with hundreds of people. In my opinion, if you can’t arrive early, I wouldn’t do this hike because there is hundreds of people even in off season. The first part of the hike we were by ourselves and it was awesome! Near the end we started passing massive amounts of people on tours. I would not have enjoyed this hike with hundreds of others. If possible consider not bringing backpack, especially a large one, part of trail are very narrow and a backpack makes it hard to pass someone in these sections. If you arrive early, head to 25 pools first because there isn’t a lot of room around the waterfall and you don’t want to be there with a lot of people if you want photos. Snack bar was nice, above average atmosphere. .50 euro to use bathroom.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 21, 2024
- Nell DLong Buckby, United Kingdom55 contributionsWorth a visit but a lot of touristsBeautiful walk but busy with tourists. Stunning views of the laverada and make sure you visit Risco waterfall. Some one way paths and you can end up stuck behind groups on walking tours but great if you want a steady walk with lovely views. Would recommend getting there early as despite there being a lot of parking it does get very busy. Great cafe on route which is reasonably priced for it’s location.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 8, 2024
- Sheryl M3 contributionsGreat tripHike to 25 Fontes & Risco Levada Self-Guided was brilliant. Filipe picked us up nice and early so we were there before all the crowds. Filipe was friendly and passed on lots of information along the way. He then picked us up at the end and brought us back the the hotel. We would highly recommend the pick up and drop off service.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 3, 2024

This is one of the 'must do' list in any Madeira guide. We visited on a fairly showery cool day, and walked it not from Rabacal but from 'Parque de estacionamento Levada 25 Fontes' whch meant that parking etc was easy and the casa de rabacal cafe made for a good halfway stop on a 7 mile walk. The advantage of this route was that the approach is via a fascinating 600 metre tunnel necessitating your phone's camera in the pitch black (not for those who don't like dark tunnels!) and then virtually people-free levada paths until you join the throngs of people that join the path from rabacal often in walking parties being led by shouty walking guides and then for 2km you are in a people congestion zone all the way to the waterfalls. The Waterfalls were great but not so amazing that it was worth the throngs of people when the beauty of the levadas to me is getting away from the crowds and into nature. The cafe at Casa de rabacal was nice... pricier than most as you might expect, but good

Having hired a car, we got to drive up some amazing roads to reach the start of the walk and arriving early, we choose not to wait for the shuttle bus so walked the 2 kms to the cafe which marks the start of several walks. It is a good walk to the main waterfall with some steep steps both up and down and in places the path is quite narrow (but safe) to allow people to pass in opposite directions. Being all year round swimmers, we carefully changed into our swim gear as there were more and more people arriving, and gingerly made our way into the pretty chilly water for a refreshing swim. I was rather surprised by the small fish nibbling at my toes as I stood in the water...how did they get there ?! I didn't bother to get changed out of my swimming shorts as they were too many people around so we headed off to the Risco waterfalls. The views through the valleys are stunning and the shade from the trees most welcome.
Despite being early in the day, the queues for the shuttle bus were already sufficient for us to do decide we could walk back to the main car park, quicker than waiting for the second or third bus (they run every 20 mins I think) and although it was all up hill, we made it back in about 30 mins (but we do walk pretty quickly)

Easy and leisurely walk where you can enjoy nice scenery. I went on a guided tour, and there was a lot of breaks where the group got to learn a lot about the history of the Levadas and different species we passed along the way. It was quite interesting, and nice to share the experience with other random travelers from around the world. The highlight of this walk was the surprisingly beautiful waterfall, where we had our lunch. I would have stayed here longer if I could, but since this was a guided tour we had to move on after halv an hour. If you want to walk fast without breaks, or enjoy the waterfalls as long as you want, I recommend walking by yourself. Bring food and good clothes, it was pretty cold to walk there at this time of year.

Very nice walk, but there is many more beautiful Levadas in Madeira. This one is very easy, with a rewarding waterfall (if its rain season). Its totally crowded with tourists even in off-season, we visited in november and there were very big groups of people from tour-buses, wich are hard to pass by. The path is narrow, that mean you will spend half of the time waiting for people from other direction to pass by. Its propably because its easily accesible by car. We visited many other Levadas wich were more calm, with beautiful views and we had much better experiences in Madeira than this. Feel free to skip this.

I was doubting if we would do this walk because I read it could be busy but I also read everywhere that you should do this so we did :)
It was a nice walk and when you come in the morning it is less crowded.
We walked to the Cascada first and then 25 fontes.
It’s a lot of stairs and when we visit (August ‘20) they where working at the road to 25 fontes.
We walked down and took the bus up to the parking lot, would recommend that :)
It is an easy walk only lots of stairs. (When you go to 25 fontes)

Risco is Much more beautiful and bigger falls than 25 Fontes. Dont skip Risco.
25 fontes are overrated, the falls are quite small and you have avoid people all the time on the way. Risco falls is much bigger, more beautiful and with less people.
I recommend to buy the 3€ van driving you forth and back from the parking.

Levada do Risco is the reward for walking down PR6.1 route and ending at the waterfall. The route towards the waterfall is steep at places, you'll notice this especially when walking back to the parking. You can use a van instead for the first part of the descent (and back).

A really beautiful walk although popular so start early. When we arrived there was no one around at all and we were feeding the birds from our hands just a few minutes down the path - take bird seed :-)
The walk down to the actual walk (down the road from the parking spot) is pretty long and when you hit the Rabacal House which is closed before 9/10am the actual walk starts. A very easy few km to Risco waterfall which is stunning but sadly did not have much water yet as theyd had a dry spell but very friendly birds there again to feed!
Then you go back on yourself and walk down a number of steps towards 25 Fontes which is a canyon with 25 springs running down the walls. It was pretty but the number of people took away from it in our experience as lots of tours come here - it was super busy even in November so goodness knows what its like in peak season.
An easy walk for the most part but about 600m of ascent and descent if you take the road up and down. I would advise you take the bus back up the road when you get back to Rabacal house, we chose not to, I do not know why but it was a hard walk back up in the heat and nothing to see as its just a tarmacked road but once we committed we just did it. Next time we would get the bus back up though.
The cafe is nice and has toilets and nice food, cakes and drinks, a welcome treat after the walk.

There is a bus to the car park from various villages. Then there is a mini shuttle bus from the car park to the start of the walk. It goes every 30 min and cost around 3 Euros.

Is there any way to get there by Public transportation from Funchal and back?
Written January 16, 2018
We will be travelling with a 14 month old, is this a suitable walk to have her in a baby carrier? And how strenuous is the walk? If it's not suitable, could anyone recommend anything similar? We will have our own car. Thanks :)
Written August 16, 2017
Hi Emily
We took our son on a combined tour (25 fountains and Rabacal) in May - same age and with a baby carrier back then. Reasonable walk enjoyed in good weather - not one for a buggy.
If you plan returning to the original car park, be prepared for a descent and ascent with some steep and slippery steps (to and from the 25 fountains). As these are quite popular walks, some patience may be required for photos or stops with your little one.

Is this walk fairly easy to find by car and walk without a guide ie well signposted and how long should we leave to walk down and then back to the car?
Written February 13, 2016
Yes, driving along the ER110 you will see a parking area and a big sign with the hiking map. There'll probably be a lot of cars there.
You really can't get lost - there is no need for a guide.
We walked all three paths available (25 fontes, risco and calheta (tunnel!)) and it took us about 5 hours including breaks.

parking znajdziesz po prawiej stronie ulicy naprzeciwko żółtej wyżiczki i zbiorniku na wodę. Mam nadzieję że to pomoże.
