We visited this Tourist Office on a recent sightseeing visit to Funchal. It is easy to find and is located on one of the main streets Avineda Arriaga. The big green sign with the information symbol was highly visible

The lady we spoke with was really helpful she gave us a free map of the Island and the City, along with useful information.

There were a number of brochures available in paper form or they could be downloaded.

The tourist office is centrally located and well staffed. Unfortunately I have not found it the most up to date and well informed about what I’d going on in a Funchal, earlier this week for example the Harlem Gospel Singers were appearing at the Congress Hall. The staff knew little about the event and could not offer advice on where to purchase tickets or costs. We knew more than they did by going on line. There is an issue about coordination of information, incidentlly the Harlem Gospel Singers were brilliant. There should be activity bulletins available and often there is not.

Today we visited the information center of Funchall.
Nice and informative people are working there.
They could answer our questions very Well.
An information center is really important to visit if you have questions about things to do and see in a city.

The staff in the tourist office are really helpful and you are assured of being told what is on in Funchal, ticket cost, etc. you can wander around for days and not know the little extras that are available to you. Visit the Tourist Office to ensure you get the most from your stay.

Funchal

Funchal was a very interesting destination with some unique history. Being on a cruise ship, tours are offered for pretty much everything, but unable to do in the seven hours that was allowed for shore leave.

Except!!!! If you do it by taxi. We were fortunate to find Luis Abreu a taxi driver. We took the Cruise-ship shuttle to central downtown. That is where we met Luis, a 20 year old college student/taxi driver full of energy and information about his home island. He provided a four hour tour which included almost all the sites provided by the cruise-ship tours. It is with his permission I provide his contact information.
luisabreu97@hotmail.com.
It is well worth contacting him for your own personal tour. Cost $100US +tip

The staff appeared pretty disinterested and very poorly informed about the many walks that Madeira offers (surely one of the island's great attractions). Maybe just my cynicism, but perhaps this is because there's no real scope for them to promote money making island tourism businesses?
This was most obvious when it came to our enquiring about the islands 3 bus companies (few of the walks on the island are circular so you need very precise information about bus routes and timings for the start and end of your walk). The tourist office did have one, rather battered folder containing most of the timetables, to be consulted in the office. It actually requires quite careful study if you're new to the island--and the presence of a queue of people all, quite reasonably, wanting to look at the same folder did not contribute to the experience. Eventually we tracked down the websites of the companies and for most routes you could download pdf timetables. Why oh Why did the tourist office staff not have the wit (or go to the small trouble) of producing a single sheet containing the website addresses.

Our view of the enterprise was confirmed by our second attempt to visit the tourist office. It was the opening day of the February carnival--a saturday--and it wouldn't be that surprising if visitors to the island wanted to find out about the programme. But they certainly couldn't find out anything from the tourist office. It was closed and shuttered--begging the question 'What's it for?.

Having read the latest reviews of the Tourist Office, I have to add our own disappointment to that of others with the main office in Avenida Arriaga.
We've been coming to Madeira regularly for over 30 years and don't recall ever getting any useful information, offered in a pleasant or friendly manner. Nowadays you can't even get comprehensive bus timetables there!

On our last visit, nearly a year ago, we went in to enquire about the opening times of Sugar Museum. We were told it couldn't be visited as it was shut. As its website said the contrary, but didn't give times, we went along to see, 350 metres away - and found it had been open for 6 months! (See my separate review).

We also enquired whether the Office had any lists or other information of holiday apartments to rent for - as every tourist office anywhere has - and were told no! But then the lady reached into her handbag and handed us a business card, saying her friend had an apartment. Fishy, or what?

We'll be returning to Funchal next week and will use the internet...

Unless you are looking for the most basic information and have some idea of what you are looking for in the first place then this office is pretty rubbish.

I asked about the Levadas and was just handed a leaflet. When I tried to ask more information they just barked at me - "YOU MUST READ".
It turns out that the leaflet only has a selection of Levadas that they recommend and there are actually many, many more. I found this out online.
I went back a few days later to ask about an interesting Levada I had see online and they said they knew nothing about it and it was probably 'fake' !!!

Maybe we just visited at a bad time, but the woman we spoke to was brick to the point of rudeness and gave us poor information. We wanted to find out some levada walks where you get could there and back by bus, and although she gave us a map and marked some buses and walks on it, they were mostly ordinary PR walks and not levadas. We also asked about bus trips and were "sold" the red bus hop-on hop-off service which actually only really goes to two useful locations so is very over priced for what it offers. We also looked for useful brochures but the office had very few... most disappointing. On the plus side, the tourist info kiosk on the sea front was much more helpful when we went there and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
