- Lexi61247 contributionsMesmerisingA delightful, virtually flat 1.5km levada walk through the trees brings you to the Balcões viewing platform with stupendous views of the laurel forests & the mountains beyond. Stay a while to watch the shadows & colours change. Served by buses 103 & 56 from Funchal, journey takes approx. 45 mins.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 19, 2023
- Leif BPietarsaari, Finland3,033 contributionsA short levada walkWe went by bus to Ribeiro Frio for a short levada walk, Balcoes de Ribeiro Frio. I'm so old that I wanted an easy walk and this one was suitable for me. It was raining so the trail was a little muddy, but we managed. And at the end of the trail we had an amazing view from the Balcoes viewpoint.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 21, 2024
- Fung S111 contributionsShort basic walkIf you are hiking for the first time or if you are looking for a short flat walk then this is for you! This is a short walk that takes you pass a cute cafe that sells snacks and some local produce such as jams, honey, and sugar cane syrup, a viewpoint where you can see some of the tallest peaks in Madeira, and back again. We completed the walk in 60 minutes. This route, also known as PR 11, gets very busy. We arrvived at around midday in mid-July and a few mini buses and a tour bus were already parked up. It's not impossible to park, there are spaces along the road that offer free parking. There are 3 eateries in the area; the first one is Abrigo do Poiso Restaurant which is about a 10 min drive from the staring point of the trail, Snack Bar Flor da Selva which is located on the trail itself and also sells local preserves. The third eatery is Ribeiro Frio Restaurant, is located at the bottom of the hill.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 20, 2024

This was our children’s favourite place as the birds were so tame and landed on their hands. What an experience to remember!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 25, 2024
- Lals2017Lancashire, United Kingdom43 contributionsGood flat easy walkGreat walk and pretty much flat. Unfortunately it was pouring down when we went but we persevered. The walk itself was lovely through the trees and really cool scenery. Couldn't see anything at the viewpoint apart from a sea of cloud. 1.5k each way. Think it took us about an hour but we weren't moving slow. Stopped for a loo break at the snack shack on the way back (50 cents) but not food or drink. Parked on the road side just down from the entrance. Lots of space although I imagine nicer days or summertime, it fills up. Glad we did it despite not seeing the views. Needed our walking boots, very muddyVisited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2024

This is a levada walk that takes about half an hour each way and is not too difficult. You get some excellent views from the end of the walk. There is a good cafe about half way along the walk which offers a selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks. Parking at the start of the walk is on the side of the road and is quite limited.

Very picturesque drive to Ribeiro FRIO and the levada walk to Balcoes . Short , flat and very easy. But …..suggest you do not eat in the village cafes or restaurants as about half way on route to Balcoes you will find this lovely tiny cafe balancing on the side of the hill. Run by the most amazing and friendliest staff with some great local home cooked food. It is a must to visit …..enjoy.

We really wanted to walk a lavada whilst in Madeira but I'd had an operation on my knee so had to be careful. We, therefore, picked this easy walk of about 3km that end at a viewing platform with magnificent views of the mountains on the opposite side of the valley along with sea views of the north coast. You can also feed the local birds; some will feed from your hand. We'd hired a taxi for the day. He dropped us off in Ribeiro Frio and I've never seen so many cars/coaches in such a small town but there is another more difficult walk going from this town also. About halfway along the track there is a small cafe. On the way back we played Pooh Sticks where the lavada seemed straight enough to follow their progress. It is a fair drive from Funchal for such a short walk but thoroughly enjoyable.

This is a short and easy walk. We went there on a rainy day and it was quite muddy, so wear good shoes and be careful. At the end there is a wonderful view - and some nice birds that seemed to be used to tourists.

Hiking madeira by bus
Take bus 36 to santana ensuring it is the one that goes via ribeiro frio. Goes from depot next to cable car. Worth the 2.75E even if you just go to Santana and back. If walking get off at Ribeiro Frio not much of a place but a great location to get on a hiking trail. Shortest option 2k to Balcoes lookout 4k out and back trip to Cabego Passeguero lookout. 7km round loop. PR10 10km one way to Santo da Serra for bus 77 ride home.

This levada is a relatively flat walk & about 2km in length (more than the signposted 1km). It enables visitors to get a sense of the levadas without being super fit or spending all day hiking. The end viewing point can be quite crowded but the views are worth the walk.

If you are planning to take your own car then forget it - or plan to arrive at 8 am. There are no parking facilities, traffic parks on the roadside for several hundred meters in both directions, creating a single track road. Coach loads of tourists meet cars going in the opposite direction and it is chaos. We couldn't get parked an never got to do the walk.

Is Ribeiro easy to get to by car? And is there definitely spaces to park?
I’ve read mixed reviews on this, so just wanting to double check.
Thank you

Yes, it is very easy to get to the trailhead, and you park on the roadside. We had no issues parking, but it is definitely a time of day thing as we read that at times parking is full. The roads are narrow and winding, but not an issue if you have had any mountain driving experience. There are several parking areas along the road nearby, so if the area directly at the trailhead (directly next to the restaurant on the opposite side of the road), there is more parking within a few hundred meters of the trail before and after it.

What height is the viewpoint to the valley floor?
Written April 9, 2017
Hi
The viewpoint is 880m above sea level so probably a few hundred meters above the valley floor.
