- Caron GBirmingham, United Kingdom126 contributionsEnchanting historic townWe took the train to Sintra as our hotel was on the main Oriente train line so it only took 35 minutes. It's a pleasant 20 minute walk from Sintra train station to the historic centre. The centre is busy even in January but it's easy to stroll around and get some great photo opportunities. Obviously it's a bit hilly if you decide to walk to the palaces from the town and some are 1 hour walk. We didn't have time but still enjoyed our time in the town.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 1, 2024
- TheLeongOhanaUnited States7,575 contributionsCompact CenterWe decided to get off the crowded bus and wander around the center of Sintra before heading back to Lisbon. Here we found some interesting shops to do some window shopping. There also were a number of cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating that had many available tables. The National Palace was closest of all the Sintra palaces but having ridden the bus down from Pena Palace I would not want to walk back up. However it’s doable to save the taxi fare or waiting around for the buses. We walked to the train station from here and wandered along some of the smaller side streets to get there. Mostly residential but we noticed a number of empty or abandoned buildings.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten March 24, 2024
- Lilac G362 contributionsA beautiful day out.The trip to Sintra lasted 40 minutes by train and cost 5,10 euros standard class. The view from the window was far from pleasant; very old buildings apparently housing low income people. But when I got to my destination the scenery changed. The weather was lovely, there were tourists everywhere, the place was not so crowded, everything was in order in that picturesque part of Portugal. Of course there were small cafes and restaurants, as well as small three weel vehicles without doors that served as local taxis. One must have plenty of time to explore it on foot and be patient as it is not flat everywhere. I had to walk downhill to discover the beauty of this place, and of course get back with bigger effort and very cautious since there were not sidewalks. It is very green, it has miradouros, little tourist shops, boutique hotels and a lot of places to take pictures.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten April 30, 2024

It is within walking distance from the station and on the way you come across some interesting buildings, stalls selling arts & crafts and some statues dotted all around. The historical centre is picturesque, with a number of restaurants , shops, a bakery and souvenir shops. There is a castle at the top of the hill as well should you wish to climb up and visit. Lovely place to visit as a day trip from Lisbon.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten May 9, 2024
- N FEdmonton, Canada135 contributionsBeautifully preserved medieval townThe historical centre of Sintra is a well-preserved medieval town in the hills just West of Lisbon, with a history of human activity dating back to before the Neolithic age and including extensive construction and occupation by the Romans and Moors prior to the Portuguese Reconquista by the Northern European Christian kingdoms. The history of the place is fascinating and the current town is nicely kept, with clean streets, modernizations that still preserve the character of the medieval town sites, and many local restaurants and shops. Travel up to the town is a bit long, especially from Lisbon, and parking is tricky at times, but it is well worth the trip to wander the cobbled streets, browse the local shops, sample the traditional foods, and marvel at the breathtaking natural views.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 4, 2024

I enjoyed just poking around town after working our way down from the Moorish Castle. If you have an extra day, it’s worth it to hop on the easy train from Lisbon. Great hillside town.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 30, 2024

A very particular country, Sintra, devoted, alas, to mass tourism. The little train from Lisbon vomits out hordes of relentless tourists, who join the solitary adventurers. Everything lives for the tourist. However, this village is worth a visit, but the influx should be better regulated.

The historic town of Sintra is nestled among several steep hills dominated by the Moorish castle and Pena palace.
It's a beautiful small compact area to spend a couple of hours wandering its streets - cute cafes, shops, picturesque alleys,...just beautiful.

Sintra has so many great things to see, including it’s historic district. I suppose it’s hard to enjoy and appreciate it during high season or when it’s crowded. So rather than visiting as a day trip from Lisbon, stay in Sintra and enjoy a stroll through the historic district in the morning or evening, when crowds are light.

A real tourist trap that no longer has much authenticity. The day bus ticket is a scam. It is impossible to get near palaces and castles without 20 euros per person. Plan a big budget for this day trip! And we spend much more time in transport than discovering the local heritage. To escape if you travel in the middle of summer!

This town is only 40 minutes from Lisbon but looks like a million miles away from Portugal. There are many palaces and buildings that would look more comfortable in Bavarian picture postcard. The town has many nice walks through the gardens and woods as well through the winding old town. Lots to see and do

It seems incredible that it is not more organized at the children's level.
Prepare to walk, and if you can, go on an organized trip.
The parking lots are packed if you don't arrive first thing in the morning... and then it will escalate, if you're clear about it, go ahead, if not...
If you go with a stroller and small children, it is certainly better to wait a few years.
It is a clearly collapsed tourist site and they do not know how to do it. If you don't mind walking, go ahead, enjoy the best around Lisbon, but be clear about what awaits you

There really is not much to actually see so budget less than an hour to wander around. Its’ extremely touristy with tons of restaurants, overpriced souvenir shops & hordes of tourists - we hated it.
Save your time to see the palace, Quinta & Castelo as these are the best attractions & much worthier of your time.

Good morning! Sintra is a beautiful place but difficult to park. The best spot will be on the way between São Pedro de Sintra and Vila Velha!

Just got back from Sintra and I got a perfectly adequate FREE map from the coffee shop right opposite the station (main entrance)

Hi. I will be staying in Sintra in August and will have to drive around the town as I will be transporting my family, some of whom cannot walk far. But I'm worried about the level of traffic - just how bad is it? Is it slow, or gridlocked, or in-between? Thanks.

Hi, having just visited Sintra, I would highly recommend you hire a private guide, we used Wonder Vans and were so happy we did. Tomas lives in the area and knew the streets and how to navigate and could just drop us off at the entrance the sites.
I would be very stressed if I was driving as the streets are very narrow and many are one way. Apparently there are up to 25,000 people/day during the summer. Tomas has a special pass which allows you to purchase skip the line tickets on the day you visit, which is great.
Make sure you visit Quinta da Regeleira it’s a magical place. Hope you enjoy your Sintra trip.
