The Moorish Fountain (Fonte Mourisca) is located along Volta do Duche. This is delightful public fountain designed by José da Fonseca (1922) and embraces Moorish features and design including a jagged arched entrance, outer horseshoe as well as symmetric teal tiled facade. You can walk into the half-moon shaped interior where you find seats, relief from the sun or rain as well as spout pouring spring water into a basin below.

Overall, the Moorish Fountain might be the pretties of the handful of decorative street fountains around Sintra. It is picturesque and a neat place to find (and to stop for water bottle refills) while exploring the city.

In Sintra there are several fountains (once vital to the population but today they are only decorative), including this one, along the Volta do Douche street, which certainly does not escape attention for its exotic appearance, being built in Arabic style ( or Moorish, whatever you want to call it). However, its appearance should not be misleading because the fountain certainly does not date back to the era of Moorish domination, but is a creation of the 20th century: originally from 1922, it was dismantled in 1960 and reassembled in the original style in the 1990s. Ancient or not, the appearance is still pleasant (at least for us Westerners) with its three Arab arches resting on thin columns and inserted in a larger arch of almost oval shape and with the perimeter made up of all arches; the façade of the fountain is then framed by a frieze which ends downwards with two columns on the sides, while above it is surmounted by a cornice with a complex decorative structure. Polychrome majolica with relief decoration decorate the external façade and the lower part of the semicircular interior cladding, where at the bottom, in contact with the floor, is the marble basin which collects the water coming out of a spout; on the sides there are two marble benches and also in marble there is a band that separates the majolica part of the wall from the brick covering of the roof.

We were on a tuk-tuk tour of the highlights of the area and our driver stopped here so we could observe this curiosity and take some photos. It is along the road leading to the palaces and there was a lot of bumper-to-bumper traffic. Quick stop.

This neo-Moorish fountain was built in early XX. century and blends perfectly in the landscape of revived Sintra. In the XIX. century, Sintra became a fashionable aristocratic resort and a gathering place for musicians and painters. The fountain is on the road from the Railway Station to the National Palace so it could not be missed in those days.

I was a little skeptical about seeing an 11th centuary castle, and I was completely blown away. The castle had the most beautiful views of Sintra, the walk around the castle was very strenuous I was grateful I wore trainers, the castle was the highlight of my visit to Sintra, I climbed the Great Wall of China last year and the moorish castle came pretty close. A must for anyone who visits Lisbon.

This fountain may be missed by Sintra visitors as most take the bus from the train station. It is located along the street leading to the center of town. The tiles are really pretty!

There are some souvenir vendors on the other side of the street. You may want to have a walk to catch this fountain see more interesting and beautiful sites.

Found this fountain while walking one day. Very pretty. So charming to see people pull up with their jugs to fill with spring water from the fountain. couldn't believe, though, when we saw a well dressed man fishing in the fountain for hands full of coins!! LOL
