Great spot to discover in the middle of the lost paths in Serra de Sintra. It’s a shame the main building looks abandoned but the site is great, you find some small building till you get to the top and the view is amazing. All the way to Cascais and Guincho beach view.

You park in a small car park below the Convent and walk up a steep stony path, as you turn the corner you start to see the view.......... only one word 'WOW'

Capela da Peninha (or Capela de Nossa Senhora da Pena), a church from the XVII-XVIII centuries with an interesting baroque style interior. It was closed when I visited it.
Facing the ocean you can see at your right Cabo da Roca, the most occidental point in continental Europe, and the light house, for the left the extensive coastal line until Cascais. A beautiful view to the ocean or to Sintra Woods, depending to where you look.
The convent was closed so you just can walk around. A little bit windy. Some meters west you can find the Ermida de S. Saturnino (St. Saturnino Hermitage), in disrepair unfortunately. A building from XVI and XVII centuries, but a more ancient worship place (a previous building was demolished to give place to the actual chapel; the place was, supposedly, founded by a companion of Portugal's first king). During a part of XX century was used as a house or barn.
Archaeological excavations also found a necropolis from XII-XV centuries and the remains of other buildings, like a cistern.
The wood surrounding is really pleasant and some hike trails are signed.
You can walk from Sintra; It took me around 3-4 hours walking. From here you can go down to Cabo da Roca walking through the paths on the forest (not signed, which can be tricky).
You can find some information about the sanctuary when you approach the place (at least in portuguese).

From here you can best see Cascais from top to the south. To the west you can see Cabo de Roca, the westernmost point in continental Europe. The small church was closed and there is not too much to do except enjoying the view. There is no fee to access the place. The woods are quite nice, humid and special, with their own microclimate. You can expect to be a little windy. You can trail a little around, but get a GPS so you wont get lost, the forest can be tricky and the paths are not well marked. The parking is limited so you may have to park in the woods and the access road is thin so drive slow.

Now that I know about this place, I will bring friends and family who visit here instead of braving the hordes at Pena Palace. For far less stress (and crowds) you can take in the unique ruins and their beautiful colors, enjoy climbing around on your own, and take in a panoramic view from Ericeira to the north to Setúbal and Lisbon to the south. You can also use this as a picnic spot, or a jumping off point for a hike on the yellow/red coastal trail. The forests surrounding the convent are magical. Bring the pups as well! For the most spectacular colors, go right before sunset. Plus...it's free!

A thousand times better than the tourist traps in Sintra. The sanctuary is small and you can't go inside but it's free, has a great view and is located along a scenic mountain road and in a beautiful forest. We also only saw two other people during our visit. The whole experience was so much better than the Pena Palace.

Bonjour à ceux qui pourrons me venir en aide....
Comment accéder à ce joli point de vue depuis le phare de Cabo da Roca ? Peut-on prendre la voiture ? Le chemin ou la montée est-il difficile à pieds , Combien de kilomètres ?
Merci pour votre aide
