The park is an integral part of your visit to the Pena Palace. Don't miss it and have enough time, it is huge and very beautiful. Start visiting the park after your tour the palace, from the top point, where the shuttle bus stops, the descent along the park paths will take you about 50 minutes. Here, take a photo of the park plan from the stand or have with you a physical copy of the plan that was given to you at the entrance to the palace. My advice is to start from here because if you go up from the lower entrance, it is a steep road up and it will not leave you with strength and energy for either enjoy the park or for a tour of the palace.
The lush, captivating, and sprawling palace grounds are dotted with romantic surprises. Several landmarks within the park are signposted near the shuttle bus stop. Highlights include the High Cross (highest point around, with commanding views), chapel, a temple, 5 small lakes with swans and its houses, giant sequoia trees, exotic plants, and Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla (included in the ticket to the Pena Palace and Park of Pena). The downhill stroll follows you to the lower park gate, at the Lakes/Lagos entry, where you'll find a bus stop and the Estrada de Pena loop road. Here you can wait for the city bus or take an Uber for your next tour of Sintra.

We walked from regaleira to pena lakes following a gps map and local signs, the walk up was stunning and didnt take long at all. We were there before we knew it. Seeing the lakes with the infamous duck houses is stunning, it really is less crowded than at the main entrance of pena palace so you feel a little more on your own and not with hoards of tourists. Its calm, well kept and very beautiful. Worth seeing but i prefered regaleira palace hands down

These man-made "lakes" are small ponds really but very attractively landscaped and very peaceful to sit/walk by. Lovely and shady on a hot day too.

Since the palace is the main attraction we did not make this park the focus of our visit but it is very good nevertheless. Has many places where you can get your little corner of tranquility. Is just below the palace and has two mini lakes full of assorted water fowl. Passed through it on our way up, from back entrance to the palace grounds.

From the Palace to the gardens, you cannot go wrong seeing this attraction. Do make sure you get there early, and see the Palace first or you will stand in queues forever. But the gardens are fantastic, and you can spend hours walking down the many many different pathways.

Many visitors don't realize that the ticket to Pena Palace includes access to the huge grounds area. On the grounds is the Vale dos Lagos, a bit of a walk down from the palace but on a well marked and comfortable footpath. The small lakes are beautiful with one containing an old turret and others with sculptures. When you exit the grounds it's a short walk up the road to the entrance of the Moorish Castle.

I might have liked this more than the actual Palace! It was beautiful and serene! So fun to explore! Even in the pouring rain we had a blast!

Valley of the Lakes is the perfect ending to a visit to Pena Palace. Its beauty and serenity is a stark contrast to the crowds and bustle of Pena Palace. I visited in November and I only saw 5 people on my 350 meter walk down to the Valley of the Lakes from the palace. I highly recommend walking down from the palace rather than up to it. One of the travelers I encountered was a young French man about 20 years of age who told me he was pretty sure he was going to die before reaching the top. I gave him a bottle of water and told him to take some time and rest because the steepest incline was ahead of him. At the end of the walk, you are rewarded with a view of the duck houses. The exit is a bus stop.

Vale dos Lagos (Valley of the Lakes) is a small string of lakes that stretch from the Fountain of the Small Birds pavilion to the Entrance by the Lakes.
This is a peaceful area of the Park of Pena to visit. You will find five small bodies of water surrounded by flush forest, planted and flowering walls and lake shores.
The lakes have fish and fowl that you will see. Note the castle-like duck houses that have been built for the waterfowl. These are fanciful features that fit with the romantic scheme of the Park of Pena. They are neat to see, something children in particular will enjoy.
We really enjoyed strolling alongside the quaint lakes. They are small so you can pass by and see them in 5-10 minutes. Do feel free to grab a seat and stick around longer if you enjoy this area of Pena Park.

In the rush to see the major landmarks of Sintra, it's easy to 'do' the Palace of Pena, hot-foot it across to the Moorish Castle and then onto the next stop on your itinerary. If you do, you'll be missing one of the highlights of the Sintra Hills.
The Parque de Pena and the Vale dos Lagos within it have a fairytale-like quality, with its towering trees, dainty bridges, chain of lakes and mini waterfalls, lush green ferns, tiny chapel, moss-covered benches and other man-made structures being slowly consumed by the undergrowth. And despite the crazy number of people at the palace, the size of the park and its labyrinthine paths make it easy to lose yourself in this beautiful setting. We wandered around for an hour and didn't see a soul for 20 minutes of that time. Bliss.

Is it possible to swim in the lakes at The Valley of Lakes in the Park of the National Palace of Pena?
Written August 19, 2024
What’s the trail from the palace to Valley of the Lakes like? Is it steep or have many stairs? How long does it take?
Thanks!
Written August 3, 2019
Get your map at the entrance to the palace. The map is very detailed, but not all that clear. The little depictions on the map are probably your best guide. There isn't really one trail. There are many trails that lead you sideways, down and up, whatever you prefer and it may take you an hour or about 15 minutes if you plan your course ahead and depending on how much in a rush you are. As to ease of walking - most is easy, even by wheelchair, but there are areas that are less so and are more steep and involve taking steps. At the bottom is an entrance with a kiosk as well as a bathroom. Most importantly, do take that map.
