Great entrance to the town. It is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved gates I have ever seen in Portugal. It’s made up of two low-rise gateways. Between the gateways is a balcony embellished with beautiful blue and white tile panels from 1740, depicting the Passion of Christ. Once past the gateway you see the main street, Rua Direita. If you walk through this gate, you will feel as if you are in a different world. A place that seems to come from a fairy tale.

When you are visiting the medieval village of Obidos, and you have left the car on the parking, then you will enter the village by the “Porta da Sra. Da Piedade” or the “Porta da villa”. By passing through it, you have to look above and so you will see the small oratory located in Porta da Vila, with a baroque balcony and blue and white tiles with allegorical motifs to the Passion of Christ. It was built by King Dom João IV, in gratitude for the protection of the Patroness during the Restoration of Independence in 1640.

One of the doors to enter in Óbidos. What a lovely surprise! Richly decorated in honor of the Virgin Mary. I recomend walking around the village to find more of these beautiful secrets.

The beautiful blue and white tiles welcome you to Obidos. The same color scheme is seen throughout Obidos and Portugal, in general. Gives different meaning to labor intensive.

This beautiful Azulejos tile work is secluded in the portico of the lower town gate.
You cannot miss it when walking up the parking lot entering the village.

A 1380 construction! Heavy history in this place! Strollers are common but not so easy to walk through the village due to stones streets and lot of stairs.

This is the entrance to the old town and it is beautiful with its tiles in blue. Sometimes there are old ladies selling fruit from their garden there(delicious! ) and sometimes someone singing.

I heard the tiles were been renovated. When are the works expected to be complete? We are traveling in September 2019.
