The construction of the castle dates back to the conquest of the Iberian peninsula by the Muslims, but its current form, including the main towers, is a consequence of successive restructuring and modifications carried out in subsequent times. Behind the castle is the Old Arms Square, used as an event area for local festivals. The entire town of Óbidos is surrounded by 1.5km of high, unbroken defensive walls. It is possible to walk along these walls even if, as we did, walking only a stretch of it may be enough to enjoy the view of Óbidos and the surrounding green area and having more time to enjoy the details of this town and its cafes. It must be said that the path that stretches along the walls at the height of the battlements has no handrails, in several points it is narrow and reaches even over 10 meters in height, therefore not recommended for children and for those suffering from vertigo.

This imposing medieval castle, dating from the 8th century, dominates the little village of Obidos. Recaptured from the Moors in 1148, the castle has been restored and reconstructed by different Portugal kings. The castle’s history includes several well-known sieges, as well as serving as a residence for royalty. Today the Palace of the Alcaldes, located in the castle, is a luxury pousada. We admired the high battlements, wide gates, and towers, and walked a portion of the walls that circle the village. The castle is not open to the public, so our view was of the exterior only. Note: take care when walking the walls. There are uneven steps and stones, and no guardrails.

Beautiful walled town, we have been told that 40 families still live within the walled town. The rest of the houses retain their splendor but have been transformed into tourist shops or restaurants. Even a church near the castle has been transformed into a bookstore. There are some specialized stores although most are for recurring gifts. The clothes are very pretty, but expensive. To eat, it is preferable to reserve first thing in the morning as it fills up with tourists. You can walk along the entire very well-preserved wall, although in some sections it is a little dangerous. You must visit the castle and not miss this town, it gives a perfect idea of what the walled towns of the Middle Ages were like. There are very beautiful pure wool clothes that are reasonably priced considering the quality.

The entire old town of Obidos is sensational, the ancient streets, narrow laneways, great city walls, churches and the castle all add to the WOW factor of the medieval site. Don’t rush your visit and if possible visit mid week to avoid the long weekend tourists. If you are staying the night visiting the old town at 7.30am should give you an hour to enjoy the site and take your photos before the first tours arrive. The walk around the city walls was a highlight.

This is an exciting experience if you’re not afraid of heights. This medieval city wall does not have a rail on one side, so if you fall, you fall to your death or at least substantial injury. I would not take children or anyone unsteady on their feet. It’s not wheelchair or stroller accessible.
It was fun, free, different from other city walls I’ve walked because of the thrill, and offers beautiful views of the city in and outside the walls. Highly recommend!
The castle itself is a hotel that you can see a little of. Great little town. I’m so glad we stopped here for a pleasant lunch, wall walk, and look around town. Highly recommend!

After our last visit here we left it too late to visit inside the castle walls so we came back. Glad we did its so picturesque inside the walls with small streets including shops and restaurants. One main thing here was the cherry Liqueur " Ginga" very tasty. The streets are cobbled but reasonably easy to walk, this is a big tourist attraction and we recommend a visit

When you want to enter the courtyard of the castle, a caretaker asks you to buy a ticket. At the cash register we sell you a medieval exhibition. Unfortunately in the courtyard the cabins are closed and there is absolutely nothing to see.

Simply one of the most beautiful cities I visited in Portugal. The wall and castle are very well preserved. We went on a Sunday and the city was empty so it was great to walk through the alleys and walls. In the castle there is an inn with an excellent restaurant!

Beautiful walled village with castle to go street 1 day. In the tourist area, shops with crafts, cherry liquor and restaurants. The castle costs 5 euros for adults and children over 12 years and 3 euros for children, I find it expensive for what it is, but we have still enjoyed it. It has a medieval setting, games and very cool constructions.

If you have a head for heights then enjoy walking around the Castelo walls. Great views of the town / Castelo and the surrounding countryside. Inside the Castelo walls is a lovely selection of houses, shops, hotels, churches and restaurants. Very pleasant to walk around and explore. Allow a good two hours.

Staying at the Pousada is a great experience, lovely view from the dining room.
There are some nice restaurants in the town, lots of bars and tourists shops. A place to walk around but not much to do. Nice churches and a couple of museums.

Hi, we are arriving in Obidos by bus from Lisbon and want to stay at the Castelo de Obidos. I was wondering how difficult it would be to get our bags up to the top to the castle - are there taxis or will the staff come and pick you up from the entrance of the town.
It looks like it is very steep to the top (with suitcases) . I have emailed the staff twice but they have failed to give me the answer.

HI Margie
As you come from Lisbon the bus will leave you in the parking area specially designed for.
As you are going a little bit backward you'll find the TOWN'S GATE (nicely decorated with ceramic tiles - azulejos). To the right you'll see a little square (for taxi), a bench and a fountain with fresh water and the terrace of the Josefa Albergaria Hotel. Once that you passed under the gate you are in front of two streets:
~ Right - as you look you'll see a cafeteria (Marion, or something like this) and a small dark pink tower gate that belongs to the same cafeteria
~ Left (in front a white house with the edges painted in yellowish brown and a column) a white house that has blue edges. The left street I recommend it because is just following it, staight ahead. On the way you'll see: right side (a chocolateria), left side a Bougonvilea Tree (red) linked by the house, restaurants (right side), souvenir shop (left sine). Opposing this souvenir shop there is a parking area and a church. From here only 200 metres and you'll find the porch that leads you to reception (terrace to the right). Also on the way you'll see the police / firesquad station, workshop (left side) and a beautiful house with an open porch covered by Bouguonvilea (right side) and in front a church that actually is a bookstore. From here to the right you'll see the arrow sign towards reception.
Do not be afraid of getting up to the citadel, it is easy and the street I recommend it is a staight line. You'll enjoy every second spent in here.
