We rented e-bikes in Penische Baleal and arrived at the lagoon passing through dirt paths in the middle of the countryside and new cycle paths. At the beginning of the lagoon there is a dirt path that runs along the entire length of it. We continued walking, stopping every now and then to take photos and admire the view. The lagoon is well maintained and is definitely worth a visit.

Staying at the nearby Praia D'El Rey resort - this was a real bonus. Whilst the silver coast beaches are beautiful - the sea is rough and not exactly child friendly. The Lagoon however provides an excellent place for kids to get wet in shallow and still waters. It also has a couple of superb restaurants and some decent bars. We drove to both sides of the lagoon, either side of the inlet - and bizarely whilst the side nearest Praia D'El Rey only took 5 minutes by car, and has the best two restuarants - the beach is fine but not quite as nice. It actually takes a full 45 minutes to drive all the way around the lagoon - though at low tide you could probably walk through the water in 2 to get to the other side. Anyway - well worth a visit or two!

The lagoon has a safe sandy beach with clear water which is ideal for little ones. There are 3 restaurants and a small mini market within walking distance. Quiet and peaceful in July.

We loved Foz do Arelho at the mouth of the lagoon. Popular with the Portuguese on holiday this relaxed beach town was a good place to stay. Various watersports are available around the lagoon, we enjoyed canoeing and paddle boarding. It is possible to find quiet spots of beach away from the larger groups. Great walks and sunsets to die for.

Quite a unique setting. Huge lagoon, loads of little pools dotted around, big sand dune at the barrier between the sea and the lagoon. Lovely sandy beaches that go on for miles. Parking, facilities, restaurants dotted about all over the place. We had a fun few hours with the kids just wandering round, playing in the pools, spotting fish and crabs etc.

Quiet, beautiful, birdwatching, seemingly endless paths to walk, areas to boat, sailboard, paddleboard, swim and fish.

looks a bit like a southern english seaside town in parts (in a good way) and has the amazing Atlantic waves crashing into the shore.

Went stand up paddling where with Carlos who also owns one of the Peniche surf schools - very calm and nice way to spend a couple of hours.

After going to a red flag beach and not being able to get into the water, we headed off down the road to the end of the Praia Del Rei resort to the Lagoon. The car park was pretty busy but it's totally fine to just park up on the pavement here, and head on down the steps to the beach. This lagoon is just stunning. There is beautiful beach all around and the water itself is so vast, so varied, so beautiful and so natural. At one point you could be in the middle of the lagoon "walking on water" on about 5 inches and then drop right down into a deep pool of luscious turquoise water. It's easy to work out the routes quite quickly, as you can either see the colour change in the water, or watch other bathers. The funniest thing is watching the locals fishing for clams. It's all bottoms up in the air as the scoop under the water.
There are fish of many shapes and sizes, little crabs etc to entertain you in this amazingly clear water, and the nicest thing - NO RUBBISH anywhere, despite the bin being right by the steps away from the water. It's just awesome. Love it.

Finns det bra utbud av glutenfria maträtter på restauranger ? Livsmedelsbutik med glutenfritt?

Sorry, no idea about restaurants, but I doubt the small places do. Grocery stores have a section for gluten-free foods.

I am going in January. Would the lagoon still be warm enough to enjoy in January?

For walking yes, for swimming no.

Hey there,
I am looking into a summer vacation in Portugal for this summer. We are 4 adults and a 4 months year old baby. We are planning on staying 10 days and would like to experience water sports such as kite, surf, SUP, nature walks, beach but also cultural things to visit. I was recommended Lagoa de Obidos. Do yo think 10 days are too many to stay in that area, is it recommended travelling with a baby and where do you recommend to stay exactly?
Thanks for your feedback!

There is a water sports centre on the lagoon and other sports would be available at other beaches. The nature walks on the three sides of the lagoon could be spread over three days. Obidos takes half a day but could be longer if you stay for lunch. Alcobacar monastery can take a whole day and there are cafes in the square outside. Batalha monastery is worth a visit as it is a different type of building. Caldas da Rainha is interesting and the market is very good. I can't help with the baby side or with accommodation as we stayed in a windmill, not suitable for more than a couple, however you will find a wide choice on the internet. Hope this helps.
