    Interesting for a few hours.
Obidos is a quaint area highlighted by a castle once constructed for Moors and then occupied by Portuguese. We arrived hoping to see the holiday festival. It closed early ( before 5pm)- thus we didn’t get to see any booths or vendors. We did frequent the many shops located along the main thoroughfare. A number of the places sold the local sherry and chocolate drink- Ginja. Apparently you drink their sherry in chocolate cups and then eat the cup! A few tips: 1) Obidos is built on a hill with many steep climbs and rough cobblestone paths. It is not a driving city. 2) Obidos is a town that caters to tourists who visit during the daytime. There is no nightlife and few restaurants. 3) English is understood here by some people. 4) a wheelchair would be difficult to operate on these streets and enter the narrow doors of most stores. Plus tiny steps seem to be at every turn! The stones of the street become quite slippery during rainy days.

    Charming little town
It is a very charming little village which makes you take a trip to the history and back. We were there during Christmas so it was crazy busy but still it was a delight to visit this little town and the castle. We didn’t pay to go into the castle rather walked on the walls of it. They have some goood restaurants!

    A Charming Medieval Hilltop Village
A charming old Medieval hill town with small shops and restaurants dotting the narrow old streets. Definitely try the local specialty, ginja, a cherry liquer. Drink it in a chocolate cup if you can then eat the chocolate cup; both are delicious. Many of the shops sell ginja, so be sure to purchase some. Lots of opportunities to take photos of this quaint town with its own Medieval castle and walls. Don’t miss the beautiful Azulejo at the city gate with its intricate blue and white tiles.

    Beautiful Medieval town
A town of 3000 people sheltered behind complete fortifications and overlooked by a grand citadel. There are great views of the countryside in all directions if you decide to climb the wall. The town is charming with the upper street leading to the citadel which houses a pousada and the lower street into the main town Tastefully restored it is a very pleasant walk along the cobbled streets with many [not too many] interesting shops, cafes and restos. A market square, an aqueduct from across the valley complete the sites. Couldnt work out why this large [for the middle ages] town was here in the middle of nowhere; turns out it was a river port but the river silted up in the 16C [shades of Bruges].

    Busy visit to Obidos Village
This is our second time visiting Obidos Village. We enjoyed walking the castle walls and walking around the old town. It gets very crowded on weekends and when tour buses arrive, which took away from our enjoyment.

    Obidos will charm you!
Obidos is a special place with a gorgeous atmosphere. We walked along the city walls to start with. It's not a walk for the fainthearted (there are no handrails to stop your fall) but the path is more than wide enough for one person walking along it. My advice is to hold on to the castle wall. It is worth the effort for the views out to Queen's Valley or over the rooftops of the town. We then ambled along the cobbled streets, popping in and out of artisan shops oozing in creative works. There is ample choice of places to eat and drink and lots of spaces to sit and rest and savour the Obidos air. The town gate has a lovely surprise in store when you reach it. An eclectic mix of busking awaits you. We witnessed an opera singer and a rock band during the two times we passed through the gate. The only thing that looks stressful in this town is driving on its very narrow streets! Apart from that, Obidos will charm you much more than you might ever expect!

    So Cute!
This really is a cute "toy" town. Very picturesque. Mostly full of touristy shops but worth a visit. The wall around the town is a marvel. High up and with no railing but you are free to walk around as much as you dare. I enjoyed it much more early in the day before it got crowded. If you are staying for dinner don't wait too late as there did not seem to be many options as it got later. Bring good shoes for the cobblestones!

    Walking Medieval History
Spent the morning here with my wife and two adult children and enjoyed every minute. I’m not one for browsing and window shopping but I enjoyed both activities here, eating well and purchasing cool memorabilia. This fairy-tale town is much the same today as it was in 1282 when King Denis gave it to his Queen (the future St. Elizabeth) on their wedding day. The walls of the city are still walkable, but the real beauty of the place is its white-washed homes with brightly painted trim on cobble stone streets - a photographers dream!

    Charming Old town
Located around 80km(50 miles) north from Lisbon Airport is this beautiful and charming Old Town. Drive was easy and motorway in great condition and because late September ain't high season anymore, we found a great parking space. Lots of restaurants, gift shops, narrow alleys and lovely old buildings. So overall nice little walk and lunch and definitely worth of visit

    Day trip
A cute little quaint village behind walls. Many small souvenir shops, wine / liquor shops offering gingha (cherry liquor in a chocolate cup) shots for $1 euro. We climbed the rocks to get to the top of the wall and came down using the stone stairs. On top you get a wonderful view of the village and the farmland outside of the village.

I took a guided tour of Obidos with a friend. The village is in great condition and was definitely worth the visit. As you enter through the main visitor entrance, you pass through a structure which was clearly designed as a defensive position in case the main gate failed. There is a great display of decorative tiles in here as well. We quickly pass into the very touristy street filled with opportunities to spend money. Fortunately, it’s not difficult to get off the main path to the cool older structures including numerous small churches. If you know what to look for, you can see how the Moorish architectural features were removed or remodeled. On the side streets you can see how people have used their fingers on the paints at the bottom of the buildings to write graffiti. It was so prevalent I asked the guide if this was encouraged or at least tolerated. We were told neither but the village lacks the personnel to monitor. We stayed off the main drag for the rest of our visit and were rewarded with some great views away from the crowds.

This is a small charming medieval town would remind you of Morocco's Chefchaouen in a smaller scale. We drove a rented car from Lisboa. You have to park outside of the Gate and you have to pay the meter. Bring your coins. We put two hours and that was enough if you're not going to have any meals. We went to the restaurant first before we came to the Village. So it was enough for us.

The bus loads of tourists come in relentlessly all day. If you’re staying the night there, it doesn’t matter much, the buses start arriving around 9 am and some don’t leave until after 7 pm. So you won’t really get any secret hours to yourself. Plus, shops close up early so there’s not much to do late but have dinner anyway.

Speaking of dinner, I would strongly encourage you to make a reservation. All of the good restaurants are full every day of the week and the proprietors actually get irritated if you have not made a reservation. We learned this the hard way and it wasn’t too fun. Most open at 7 pm for dinner.

The town is cute, no doubt, but small and every last thing caters to tourists. All the shops sell the same things. There are two, short main streets. You can’t go in the castle because it’s a luxury hotel. You can go up on the castle walls but it’s a little scary — no handrails and the trees you pass are full of wasps, which I suspect were a secret medieval army unto themselves. Bringing small children up there would require a very strong judgment call.

Instagram and Facebook opportunities are numerous, if that is your thing, but if you’re waiting for people to get out of your photo — hahaha!

The locals, well I wouldn’t exactly call them friendly, but they weren’t unfriendly. They just seem tired. It’s like they love the tourists’ money but aren’t sure they love the tourists. This is something I understand but I don’t think this attitude has shown through as strongly anywhere else as it has here. They are simply overrun.

If you have mobility issues, I would think twice about coming here. The rough cobblestones and hills are hard on the ankles, and in the rain all is very slippery. There are many steps and no way for a wheelchair to get through. There is a strip of flat rock through the middle of the streets that is a relief to walk on, but this is taken up by strollers and those who wore stupid shoes like strappy sandals and wedge heels.

I’m not sure about all this hoopla about finding a place to park. There is actually a large lot near the aqueduct that was never full and we were still there at the height of the season. I would not leave anything in it though, it is not monitored, unlit and too far from town to keep an eye on. But it’s still close enough to town to get there in five minutes on foot. I’d definitely rent a car rather than get in one of those buses. By the way, those bus drivers drive like maniacs and won’t stop for pedestrians. If you’re going to cross the street, don’t take it for granted that a bus will stop. We saw this happen several times.

This quaint medieval town with its old city walls, narrow cobblestoned streets and traditional houses and churches is considered the best example of a traditional Portuguese town. The town was presented to the Queen of Portugal on her wedding day in 1214.

Enjoy wandering around the streets of the town and seeing the large medieval castle, city wall, and small churches.

To truly experience Óbidos, try the famous cherry liqueur called ginjinha. It’s traditionally served in a small chocolate cup and it’s a yummy treat.

We stayed two nights in Obidos. We love history, and it certainly comes alive here. However, since the walls surrounding the village lack parallel "restraining" walls to grab, it can be dangerous. While we were there, it rained a little, so the town had closed [by metal bars] the walls so we couldn't walk them, rather than risk a fall. Very good...but it does limit what you can see and do. There are many shops to purchase trinkets, clothes, pottery; terrific restaurants; and some bars to stop at. They carry on the medieval theme rather well. Being Portugal, there are some utterly magnificent pastry shops, too. However, you don't need two days, or even a day and a half, to drink in the history of the town, so we toured nearby fishing villages and other area sights. In short: It is very possible to "do" Obidos in one day.

The city is almost completely surrounded by superb ramparts, it is a shame that there are no places outside the city to admire them. Large paid car parks allowing easy access on foot to the main street of the medieval town, but so many people and so many tourist shops. The houses in the small streets are generally poorly maintained, which is a shame.

Obidos is an ancient walled village in Central Portugal. Unfortunately, we visited on a Saturday during a book festival and found it very crowded. While the village is in remarkable condition & beautiful, almost every structure is a tourist shop, cafe or wine store. We did enjoy a wonderful and quiet lunch at the castle atop the village. This is now a luxury hotel and the restaurant offers excellent food at reasonable prices. I recommend you visit on a weekend morning without the crowds.
Also, there is a well preserved Roman aqueduct that runs right through a parking lot near the town wall.

Obidos is one of the most popular destinations for cruise tourists coming out of Lisbon. This could be seen every morning from around 9 AM, when the busses arrive and unload massive amounts of tourists, who all walk the same (cozy) main street up to the castle and church.
While being an amazing town inside the city walls, one must be prepared for the massive amount of tourists in this small town.
Do, however, walk the wall of the fortress all around the town with amazing views.

On your way from Lisbon to Coimbra (or Porto) I strongly suggest stopping at this medieval village (presuming you're driving). It's on the way to both cities with a very small detour and it will consume around 3 hours, but very quality and memorable hours.
The village looks like from a movie, stepped backed in time. Old city walls encircle it with a terrific Castle and fairy tale like cobbled streets full of old Churches, small alleys, shops, bars and restaurants.
