The “Church of São Tiago” is on your right hand side, located within the walls of the city, so very near the entrance to the Castle, it is a baroque and neoclassical temple that was built in 1186 by order of D. Sancho, and later rebuilt after being destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.
Originally it had three naves, with the main entrance facing west, so it was directly connected to the interior of the castle. This church was intended for the use of the royal family during their stay in the village, being enriched over the centuries with numerous works of art, among which stands out the Galeria da Rainha, a work of Gothic sculpture. From here you are walking straight into the "Rua Direita".

Sao Tiago Church stands within the Castle Obidos walls. It's just aside the main gate to the Castle grounds at the end of Direita main street.
However, I was confused when I entered it was a bookstore inside. Moreover, they don't sell religious books only, but also kids books, cookbooks, novels, etc...
At the same time we noticed a colorful Portuguese "stairway to heaven" stepped altar, so I concluded it's a mixture of a Church and a bookstore.
Anyway, good and useful use of space.

This is a big old church at the end of a beautiful street. The church currently appears to be a book store. It would be nicer as a church. But the building is still very nice.

We love bookstores, and this was the most unique one we've seen. It's in a de-consecrated church and even if you are not looking to buy a book it is well worth stopping in and having a look around.

This church no longer functions as one, but has been redesigned as a very impressive book store that's well worth a visit - if not for the books (the vast majority of which are of course in Portuguese) then for the remodelling and the unique combination of bookstore and church!

The unique and unexpected thing is that they have turned a simple church into a bookstore while still preserving the altar area and maintaining the brightness and openness of the church without making it look cluttered.

I love odd bookshops as there is something wonderful about books when they are displayed well. This is a converted church and the book shelves have been arranged in curves to break up the space and lead you in.

Back where the alter used to be is an open space that was being used for a music and movement display when we were there. Of course the books are in Portuguese so nothing for me but still a pleasure to be there and we bought some bookmarks.

A surprise. It's an old church, but when you step inside you find that it is a very good big bookstore with excellent displays. Don't miss the colorful altar. Good re-use of an old church.

Went into this church and surprised to find while it still had a lot of church aspects, it was also a bookshop. Definitely worth the visit.

This old church has been made into a lovely bookshop. They have preserved the church and made one of the loveliest bookshops I've ever seen. They also have books in other languages and nice cookbooks!
