About
The village museum José Franco, also known as Aldeia Saloia is located in Sobreiro, in the municipality of Mafra, district of Lisbon, in Portugal. Built by the sculptor and potter José Franco, it represents the typical occupations of Portugal in the past in miniature scenarios, with the respective working instruments, constituting a true ethnographic museum. The space also has a replica of a life-size village, with functional miniatures of the region, a leisure area for children with toys and the animal farm opened in March 2022. It also has a Bakery, where you can taste the famous "Pão com Chouriço", but not only… and a ceramic craft shop. We will have more news soon!

This village in Mafra seems to be a joke, but it keeps the true history of Portugal. The Aldeia Museu José Franco is a charming recreation of the Portuguese rural life of the 20th century. With miniatures, workshops and handmade bread, it offers an unforgettable journey into the past, perfect for all ages.

I remember so well being a little girl and going with my parents and grandparents to see "the village of the little ones and bread with choir". Now I am the mother and to kill misses of this childhood place, I took my daughters to feel that magic of this special place. Everything is super well preserved, as if it had not been about 30 years since my last visit. The chorus bread is still there, but now with some more delicacies to accompany. The museum with the works and the history of Mr. José Franco is fantastic too. And the cherry on the top of the cake is realizing that all these years have passed and this place continues to be free, giving the possibility for many boys and girls, their parents and educators / teachers to continue to show this legacy without any associated cost. I congratulate all the people involved in this project, and I hope that 30 years from now, when I visit again, I will continue to feel like an authentic child keeping the memories of my childhood so alive. I highly recommend.

On my birthday, I visited this place full of good memories from my childhood. It's getting better and better and with a lot to explore. It is a space where it is possible to learn about Portuguese culture, representing a rustic village. It was built by the sculptor and potter José Franco and represents the different professions typical of Portugal in the past. In every corner, we can discover scenes of miniature villages. It has a restaurant, lots of fun spaces for children to play, a craft store, interaction with animals and a kiosk.

This charming miniature recreation of a Portuguese village of old by the potter Jose Franco will delight adults and children. It takes visitors on a tour of a by-gone era. Entrance is free, you might want to visit when it won’t be crowded, such as a weekday. It’s accessible by some day tours from Lisbon that visit the towns of Ericeira and Mafra, both of which are well worth visiting.

100% recommended. A very pleasant visit to see a recreation of a village from those times. Very well cared for and highlight the man who is dedicated to making small sculptures with clay live. We were lucky enough to meet him at the end of the visit and he gave my daughter a clay cat sculpture made in front of us live, paying the will. They have a cafeteria with products made by themselves among others and at very popular prices. Too bad they don't have much publicity to give them. We found it by chance on Google Maps.

Good experience with family. It is very interesting to see the care with which the models were crafted, showing life and habits in ancient Portugal. There is a local snack bar, with very tasty bread at low prices. I recommend it to spend 1 to 2 hours with the family.

Review only of the Adega restaurant. Second time I'm having lunch at this restaurant, the first time the cuttlefish feijoada was just feijoada without cuttlefish, I told the waiter in order to improve the service. Today I went again, second chance and it was bad from start to finish. Incomplete starter orders, and when I called it to their attention and it didn't appear on the invoice, instead of an apology what I received was a "it can't be". I had ordered mixed grill and bitoque with well-cooked egg for the child and it came with tough meat with no flavor and an undercooked egg. Everything was left on the plate and I asked to speak to the chef. I explained the situation and he was sorry and asked if I wanted any offer as an apology. I told him no, that the aim was not to have free payments for the meal that was left on the plate, in my opinion it would be more the restaurant that should say that it didn't need to pay than for me to decide whether or not I wanted a free one. I am not coming back. Tasteless and quality food.

This was my third visit in 3 months. I love taking visitors to this charming and unique museum. Built and run as a labor of love, this tribute to a Portuguese village is a great way to spend a cloudy afternoon or entertain kids. It comprises small houses to peek into and view the various occupations of a century ago. Working water and windmills showcase the fascinating technology of the past. A small farm completes the scene. Plenty of space for kids to run around and explore. Snacks and light meals are available from a little cafe. There's a section featuring the ceramic work of Jose Franco and a well-priced gift shop for reproductions and cookware.

The José Franco village was an unexpected surprise, half an hour from Lisbon. A morning well spent with the family, both for children and adults. Be amazed by the small village of clay figurines, the farm animals, and the artist's ceramic works. One of the highlights was being able to watch live the skill of a craftsman molding the clay while he explained.
The place is taken care of. It has restaurant spaces, with meals of the day or lighter solutions such as traditional caldo verde and bread with chorizo. The restaurant offered vegan options.
It exceeded all expectations.

An unusual monument to the local potter J Franco, this is a miniature re-creation of a typical Portuguese Saloio village. The displays are interesting and in good working order, and there in plenty to keep both young and old interested and entertained. There are food facilities and clean bathrooms available

The village is still beautiful and it's really fun to come here. Unfortunately, the cafe that is now offering bread and chorizo has terrible service. The employee who was on duty today is very arrogant. I sat down with my family to drink something, I was fine with being denied a glass, when drinks were served with glasses at the next table. The honey breads must have been made the day before yesterday, as they were harder than the wooden tables. It's a shame not to have the same service that I had in the past, which was wonderful and friendly.

We returned after a few years and were happy to see some regeneration. However, we were looking for the incredible bread with chorizo that was sold there: the bread continues to be sold but it went from incredible to very weak! The dough is weaker than that found in many hypermarkets, and the unmistakable flavor of artisanal Mafra bread has been lost. It's not even worth talking about the chorizo. You pay a lot and the quality doesn't match! It would be good to rethink quality, a lot of people went there a lot because of the bread.

José Franco and his wife built this fairytale place many years ago. It is worth going there to immerse yourself in a typical Portuguese village in miniature: from the shoemaker, to the school, to the mills and the chapel, everything is taken care of down to the smallest detail. With water and mills and characters that come to life. All… free!
