Neighborhood: Graça & São Vicente
You can be thankful that most common travel guides don't mention Graça and São Vicente that often. Part of Lisbon's historic center and "Old Town", they feel like independent villages in the capital's center, and more untouched than Alfama. Amazing views, restaurants and parks, as well as important monuments like the S. Vicente Church and the National Pantheon, make this a spectacular option for those looking for a more tranquil walk-around in the center of Lisbon. Graça has been the choice of many younger people over the past years, both nationals and expats, given the cozy feeling of the neighborhood and its hidden secrets.

Although the church has medieval origins, it was rebuilt in the 18th century in late Baroque style and remodeled in the following century. The white façade, with two orders and a mixtilinear tympanum, is simple in structure and inconspicuous. The interior, however, is certainly more interesting: a single nave with four large arches on the right and three large arches on the left (the fourth is a real chapel), plus a transept and an apsidal presbytery. What is striking, once inside, is the rococo decoration in carved wood of the side altars, which also stand out for their golden color and which overshadow the pleasant balconies placed above the chapels. Two other baroque altars are located at each head of the transept. In the main altar, set against the apse wall, marble prevails and on the side walls of the presbytery there are two baroque organs (an even larger organ is on the choir loft of the counter-façade, supported by two columns). We were unable to visit the monastery (the entrance is next to the church, under the bell tower), because it was still closed during our passage. In front of the church is one of the best-known viewpoints in the centre: the miradouro da Graça.

During the tour on the green line of the tourist bus in Lisbon, my girlfriend and I passed by the Church of Graça and the convent of the Order of Saint Augustine, along with the Quartel da Graça in part of the Fernandina Wall. This barracks was installed after the extinction of religious orders where the convent was transformed into barracks for several army units.
This set comprises 2 gardens: Cerca da Graça next door and Graça in front of the church, the Miradouro da Graça and a Bandstand. An interesting set.

This is a beautiful church next to Miradouro da Graca. Probably because it is located in the hilly Alfama area, there were not many tourists here. The adjoining convent is extensively covered with azulejo tiles. To get here, take tram 28 and get off at the Graça / Miradouro da Graça stop. The church is about 100 meters away (about 2 min. walking).

Beautiful church with free entrance. I think you only pay to get on the terrace, but we didn't get on.
Also accessible by public transport. We opted for a 15-minute walk from Praça da Figueira. A little tiring but doable.

The view is it's own reason to visit this area, but the church is really stunning. There is a peaceful room you can sit in and relax, and another with many little figures and paintings on the walls. It's a quick 5 minute walk through but worth it.

If you are enjoying the views from Miradouro da Graça, stop by to see the interior of this church. Nice place to cool of on a hot day as well. Interesting ceiling decor. But if you have already seen too many churches, you can give it a pass.

This is yet another spectacular cathedral in Lisbon off the beaten path with far fewer tourists! The modern structure was built in the 1500s with an adjoining convent, but its history dates back even further to the founding of the original convent in 1271. The interior has soft pastel colors, priceless artwork, and dark alcoves and is worth a visit mostly because it’s not overrun with tourists.

This church can be at the top of a steep street depending on direction you visit but well worth the visit. Set in a great view point. The ceiling is the most impressive feature of this fine church.

We discovered this place after dining nearby with our two Lisbon based sons on Portugal Day and looking out across the city from the Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (formerly the Miradouro da Graça).
An impressive exterior - we’ll have to try to get to see the interior on a future visit.

When visiting da Graca viewpoint, I decided to have a quick look at the nearby church and convent. While it's not in a great shape, it's worth a look for its azulejos.

What hours is the Igreja & Convento da Graca open to the public? Thank you.
Written June 21, 2019
I am not sure but I think standard opening hours.

Where exactly is the Igreja & Convento da Graca located? The map on TripAdvisor seems to show it on what I assume is a bridge in the middle of the Tagus River! Please advise me. Thank you.

Sorry it’s a bit late - I have just got them to correct location at the 3rd attempt. It is adjacent to the Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen (formerly the Miradouro da Graça).
