The area

Address
Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

This is a full size replica of the plane that two Portuguese aviators flew in across the Atlantic to Brazil - over 4000 km. They had to ditch in the sea for a while due to bad weather and it took them 79 days to get across in total. What an achievement!

Monument of the fírst crossing of the south Atlantic by Cabral and Coutinho i 1922. They flew from Lisobn to Rio de Janeiro. They had to change aircraft three times en route because of technical problems, but allways the same type - Fairey III. The all metal monument is a copy of the last plane named Santa Cruz.

The Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho Monument is located right along the foreshore of the Tagus River.

With the highly visited sites all around it, including the 25 de Abril Bridge (25th April Bridge) to the East and the Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) and Torre de Belem (Tower of St Vincent) just to the West, this monument is lesser known, but still, a significant attraction.

Sacadura Cabral was a Portuguese aviation pioneer and together with Gago Coutinho, conducted the first flight across the South Atlantic Ocean in 1922, from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.

He disappeared while attempting to fly over the English Channel only 2 years later on 15 November 1924.

On the way to view the Tower Of Belém on the waterfront we came across this superb statue of a Fairey seaplane totally unexpectedly. It is not exactly a hidden secret, but given the unusualness of the structure, it is surprising that it is not better known. It was the first flight across the South Atlantic in 1922 and took 79 days. Gago Coutinho was Portugese, and the flight commenced close to the “statue” position.

The monument is dedicated to two naval aviators, Cabral and Coutinho, who conducted the first flight across the South Atlantic Ocean (and the first one using only the astronomical navigation), flying from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro to mark the centennial of Brazil’s independence in 1922. They used three different Fairey III biplanes and flew in several stages, covering the distance of more than eight thousand kilometers.

One of the interesting things to see in Belem is the steel replica Fairey III-B 'Santa Cruz' plane that was used by by Portuguese pilots Gago Coutinho and Sacadura to cross the South Atlantic between Portugal and Brazil in 1922 to commemorate the centennial of Brazil's independence.

Note: There is a plaque next to the aeroplane monument providing information about the flight path for this famous aerial crossing.

You can see the Fairey III-B replica along the sea at the eastern end of Jardim da Torre de Belem, just a couple minutes walk from the Belem Tower. It is convenient have a look at this monument before or afterwards.

Here’s an idea to get the most out of your sightseeing in Lisbon.

The tram 15E takes you from downtown to Belem (buy a ticket onboard) - and here you’ll find 4 major sights within a 20 minutes radius.

This impressive water plane - Monumento a Sacadura Cabral

plus

- Moisteiro dos Jeronimoes (an even more impressive monastery)
- Torre de Belem (a pretty little tower in the water)
- Padrão dos Descobrimentos (a magnificent tribute to the age of discovery)

I bet this trip ends up being some of your best time spent in Lisbon.

This monument commemorates the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic, undertaken, in 1922, by two Portuguese aviators Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral. The aeroplane was a British biplane, a Fairey III. Now, there exists a certain confusion about the first Transatlantic flight in history. The most famous one remains that of Charles Lindbergh in 1927. However, Lindbergh by far wasn't the first one who did it. 8 years prior, in 1919, the British pilots, Alcock and Brown pioneered the first non-stop Transatlantic flight, however, theirs was a somewhat abridged route, taking off in Newfoundland and landing in Ireland. Lindberg's was a "full-scale" flight that connected arguably two most important cities in the world at the period, originating in Long Island (think NYC) and terminating in Paris.
All of the above, however, was limited to the North Atlantic. Five years prior to Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis' flight, the Portuguese flew over the South Atlantic, from Lisbon to, sure enough, Rio de Janeiro, the biggest city of Portugal's only South American colony, its former overseas possession Brazil.
Due to the fact that their crossing was undertaken in stages, with about eight intermediary landings on the way, the event largely stayed confined to the Portuguese history.
The aeroplane is a replica and not the authentic plane. The original plane, the Fairey IIID "Santa Cruz" is on the display in the nearby Museum of Navy, Museu de Marinha, about 15 minutes' walk from the monument, across from the National Coach Museum. It is the only original Fairley III that exists in the world.
