Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

- Ed CBirmingham, United Kingdom149 contributionsBeautiful collection of tropical trees and plants and an oasis of peace and calm away from the madness down by monastery etc. Somewhere lovely to have a picnic. The greeenhouses and buildings are seriously in need of TLC but restoration / renovation works look about to start - hopefully this will make this a great space . €5 entry fee.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 19, 2024
- FredAgnesMatLoSalon-de-Provence, France28 contributionsPretty nice and pretty place. Certainly it must be even better if it is hot. The gardens were very well maintained. There was a missing place to buy drinks. Like all other visits to Lisbon it is a bit expensive for what it isVisited February 2025Traveled with familyWritten February 16, 2025
- Abigail5York, United Kingdom352 contributionsNice little botanic garden that needs more love but pleasant to walk around. The staff however on the gate were awfully rude. We were utterly ignored at first despite trying to speak to a female security lady who was playing on her phone. When another young girl came out to serve us she was also really rude. No interest or love for the place clearlyVisited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 29, 2024
- Hillybilly5061 contributionsGood variety of plants, especially palms, which are reasonably well labelled. Gardens generally rather unloved. Even the main paths are rough with loose stones, so wear good shoes. There are toilets and there was a coffee van in the entrance area but no cafe. Could do with some tlc.Visited January 2025Traveled with familyWritten February 1, 2025
- D. AaronsonAsheville, North Carolina691 contributionsThis is a bit of a mixed bag. It's an oasis of peace in the otherwise busy and hectic area of Belem. However, it's a bit pricey considering there isn't a lot to see. The most interesting parts (cactus garden, Japanese garden) are basically in ruins. Cafes are marked but appear to be permanently closed. It feels a bit like an abandonded botanical gardens. Difficult to recommend overallVisited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 28, 2024
- Chloé BDijon, France407 contributionsI think we were lucky but normally this park is paying nevertheless the day we went there this last one was free! So we were able to eat our sandwiches in this beautiful park, where ducks and peacocks walk freely. Very quiet park, few tourists. On the other hand, a whole part of the park is a little abandoned.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 13, 2024

Hey it’s not that big and not a manicures garden but an enjoyable visit. At the far end is Palácio da Calheta with some low hedges. There are some good sign in English and Portuguese dotted about. The peacocks were fun, plenty of interesting trees, cacti etc. enjoyed a pleasant walk. Also some places to sit too. €5 per adult, €2.5 under 18

Very disappointing! Not worth the €5pp unless it’s a donation to get some work done to the gardens!! The pathways are very rough, stones and potholes. Wear good walking shoes!
The water features are full of algae and moss.
The gardens are not looked after, overgrown and full of leaves!! No maintenance done!
There are not many markings telling you what the plant/tree are or where they are from!!
No map!! No wheelchairs as it’s very hilly and rough rocky pathways!!

We were unable to visit the Jeronimos Monastery in Belem due to the ridiculous queues, and chose to visit the Tropical Botanical Gardens behind the Monastery. It was refreshing to find there were no crowds.
We enjoyed strolling among the trees and ponds watching the peacocks with their chicks, and enjoying the shade.
Overall the gardens while considerably much nicer than the Botanical Gardens of Lisbon (including a lot less hilly), do look a bit tired, and need some TLC, but make a pleasant change from the more heavily touristed sights.

A rating of 2 is a bit generous of me. Except for an area consisting of lawn, agapanthus, and bromeliads - plants found in ordinary people's gardens in much of the world - the botanical garden is in terrible disrepair. Specimen plants have been squeezed out by weeds, ponds are full of algae and have no fish or working fountains, and the walkways, stairs, and buildings are crumbling. Explaining away the decaying infrastructure by calling them 'ruins' is specious and certainly does not excuse allowing weeds to choke the small percentage of truly tropical plants. I say 'doesn't excuse' because whoever is in charge chose to spend tens of thousands of euros on dozens of two to five meter tall 'Alice in Wonderland' characters made of cloth covered wire frames - money that could have been used to rehabilitate at least some of the garden. My rating of 2 instead of 1 reflects the break my wife and I enjoyed from the throngs of tourists at the nearby monuments and museums while in the garden.

Not the best we’ve ever been to, but a perfectly pleasant way to spend an hour or so with lots of little hidden corners - the cactus garden and nymph garden being cases in point! It would be interesting to see it in a couple of months’ time, when I’m guessing it will be at its best. Lots of peacocks around, too!

We came here on a whim on our visit to Belem, and was very pleasantly surprised. It is a very curious location, with a range of hidden area and quirks. There were peacocks, ducks, chickens and cats wandering the grounds. The gardens were beautiful. We particularly enjoyed the oriental garden, which was reasonably hidden away. It had a stepping stones pond, pretty bridges and we even saw ducklings swimming through. Would have liked a bit context to the gardens, as there were a variety of interesting what looked like abandoned buildings and houses which sparked our curiosity, although with a quick google we found out more about it. I even got lucky enough to get to sit with one of the adorable little cats on my lap before we left. A very cheap (€2.50 student ticket) and accessible location to visit, among others, in Belem. Felt like we were on a little adventure. Would highly recommend!

DREADFUL! An absolute waste of time and money. Very poorly-maintained and stocked, very few plants and trees of interest, and incredibly rude, surly, unhelpful staff at the entrance. Although, if I had to work there and mug people for 4 Euros to get in, I'd probably be rude, surly and unhelpful too.
The best thing about it was a grumpy peacock who took great delight in screaming at everybody that walked past him.

What a gem to stroll through and explore wonderful flowers and plants while enjoying the shade. Anyone not enjoying the garden either didn’t take the time to explore it in full or have no appreciation of nature. Slow down and smell the flowers.

The gates were closed when we travelled to Belém to see the park on Christmas 26th. I didn't find any information from their website about the construction which would have been nice. So before we left we just peeked through the park bushies and found out Jardim Botanico Tropical amazing! :D

Such a nice little gem placed in Belem area. I was slightly surprised that you have to get a ticket… but I would definitely say it’s a lovely place for a walk or picnic. I guess it’s much better during late spring and early summer when all of the flowers and plants are blooming. In October majority of plants were dropping leaves and flowers and some of the park areas were closed due to maintenance.
