The area

Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
How to get there
  • Baixa/Chiado • 2 min walk
  • Rossio • 5 min walk

    Lisbons friendliest Hotel
Have we just found friendliest and helpful Hotel? The Room is kept spectacularly clean ,breakfast is superb from regular scrambled or fried egg, bacon sausage etc bread of every description cheeses pastries and one off special omelettes made to order. And all the while surrounded by friendly helpful staff, wander out to the front desk where again nothing is to much trouble and every request is taken care of. located a short stroll from Restaurants and Bars, Buses and Trams 2 minutes away as is the Metro. Trains further 5 minutes walk. 10/10

    Major Tourist Street
This may be ground zero for tourism in town. It is a straight line street leading from the Commercial Square and Arch and River up to a major crossroads square. Lined with tourist shops and tourist restaurants. Worth a stroll to see how the city was re-built after the 18th Century earthquake.

    Very busy
This street is one of the most popular tourist destinations for shopping and eating. Cafes are situated down the middle of the street and there are also lots of stunning buildings to admire. Lots to see and its nice to sit and spend some time relaxing. The cafes offer snacks, meals, cocktails and much more.

    Pedestrian street
This is the main pedestrian only street that runs about 6 blocks from square to square. Its full of shops, bakeries, and restaurants. A few hotels as well. Can be very busy during the day, but go before 8am and you'll have the place to yourself.

    Favorite Area in Lisbon!
The Avenido de Liberdade is nice for a stroll and seeing the beautiful tree-lined street and high end stores. But THIS area (on and around Rua Augusta) is where the average person can really shop! The streets are wide and beautiful. Many many restaurant opportunities and SO many unique shops not seen in the US. This was our favorite area of Lisbon to walk around, have a drink and shop. It very clean and tourist friendly. The shopping is nice, but not over the top and also not loaded with "trinket" shops like Alfalma, which I found dirty and disappointing.

    My favorite street in Lisbon
Rua Augusta located in Baixa, the central district of Lisbon. The Baixa has three main streets - Prata (silver), Aurea (gold), and Augusta (relating the Portuguese king to a Roman emperor). Rua Augusta is pedestrian street with inviting cafes, bustling shops, street musicians and it is the most luxury and elegant street among those three. Frankly, this is the best part of city clean, safe, flat and yes, touristic. I found here my favorite women's clothing store Parfois here and also a French cafe Paul. Rua Augusta has delightful ambience and perfect for strolling it doesn't matter day or evening. We had a lot of fun walking here in the evening and listened to real concerts of wonderful singers and musicians.

On a rainy and wet day this pedestrian shoppingstreet can be very dangerous because the pavement (calçada portuguesa) made of basalt and limestone, can be very! very! slippery..... and you might risk to fall.

If the sun shines, other risky surprises might wait for you: pickpockets, agressive restaurant owners/employees who want you to come in their tourist traps.

But.... worth a walk from main square/praça do comercio to Rossio.

Rua Augusta is a great street in the city centre of Lisbon to stroll along and check out the various shops and restaurants. There are plenty of restaurants too which have outdoor seating. The only slight irritant as with most streets in Lisbon is the continuous amount of guys offering drugs for sale no matter what time of day or whatever type of person you look like.

It's the classic downtown street, leading from the river and the Praca up to Rossio. Along the way there are tourist shops and tourist eating places, but don't let that discourage you. The walk is short and pleasant and gives you a taste of the new city that was created after the 1755 earthquake.

Lisbon is a fascinating city - and too packed with tourists even at lo season. Go for arts and culture, enjoy deals for city public transport, queue for an hour to ride fun Tram 28 that shows great views
BUT avoid Airbnb offering too good to b true spaces. They are not. Go for hotels. Foodies like Clube des Journalists, quirky , worth struggle to find ?

One of the main pedestrian street in Lisbon. You'll find a great deal of shops and restaurants around here, but you should check their quality. But even if you don't stop by, just walking through the street and enjoying the atmosphere of the city is nice!

Nice streets with nice stores just as much as I wanted to like the place got ruined by pushy people in front of restaurants and drug dealers. I got approached 7 times by drug dealers just walking past Rua Augusta to get back to my hotel. Especially a problem from Justa Lift in front of Starbucks and on the corners of Rua Augusta. It happened every day when I walked there. I understand Portugal has a different drug politics about drugs but allowing this is an embarrassment to the country and ruins people's days and holidays (maybe even people's lives in the long run). Episodes like this are the only reason that makes me question if I want to go to Lisbon again.

I like the vibe of Rua Augusta. I like the tile work patterns on the street and the fact that it is pedestrian friendly. I like the Arch at one end and Rossio Square at the other end. It is just vibrant with all the people. It is one of my favorite streets in Lisbon.

Rua Augusta is a really lovely pedestrian street in the heart of Lisbon. We walked here several times and made use of a few of the cafes and restaurants in the vicinity. It is a nice, clean and very pleasant area to be in. There are some lovely shops too. It leads to the Praca do Comercio and the water's edge by the river Tagus. Not to be missed.
