Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

This is a lovely spot for a drink in the sun but there are two toilet cubicles for men whereas the only other toilet is a disabled toilet that has a toilet and urinal in the same space and a message on the door to say staff have priority use. Consequently on a busy afternoon the queue was so long that I gave up. The message to female customers here is ‘we don’t care about you’

It was a beautiful spot to sit in the sunshine for an hour whilst my partner was in a meeting. I took a spare sun deck chair and sat… and sat… and sat… whilst men around me got served and even when I flagged the waiter down he totally ignored me. When I got REALLY thirsty, I practically had to rugby tackle the guy and he dismissively sent a female waiter to come and take my order. I have never felt so invisible in Europe.

The view is superb but that alone is worth it in this establishment. When we arrived we sat down in the deckchairs, several waiters walked past us, ignoring us. Finally a waitress approaches us to take the order, no hello, not a smile, immediate payment before receipt of the order we just asked why and she responded aggressively that it worked like that. My husband asked her why she didn't even say hello or even return the courtesy when I addressed her and she turned her back and left. Another waiter arrived to deliver the drinks, he spoke to us in English immediately, we apologized for not understanding the language (we speak French and Portuguese) and he set the drinks down without a word other than English. I would like to believe that it is seasonal but really no effort has been made. Unheard of in Portugal, surely one of the most unpleasant services I have experienced in this country.

This is located in a lovely spot by the sea and could be a top tourist destination. Unfortunately the lack of provision of female and toilets really lets this place down. There are 2 “men only” cubicles and one other cubicle which is for disabled people, men and women, but staff have priority! There is a toilet and a urinal in there so I’m not sure how this would be a suitable for disabled people as it’s quite small. There were 10 frustrated women waiting to use the one multipurpose toilet when I went there, so my friends and I decided to go elsewhere. Lisbon in general needs to up its game when it comes to the provision of decent toilets for women - this is a prime example!

We didn't even sit down. As soon as we arrived loaded with luggage we asked to be able to move the table slightly in the shade, since it was 1pm and there were very few people. The waiter not only said no, but even came to check if we had minimally moved the table. Rude.

I have walked this area a few times, excellent on a sunny day. Great way to see part of the city and be along the river. The sound of the river's waves is pleasant. Attracts a lot of people when the weather is good.

I enjoyed this walk along the river several times during our stay in Lisbon. The views are great. There are some good cafes along the way to stop and get a cool drink. And there are ferry and train stations.

This is the beach that is right downtown and is part of the ancient center of town where galleons used to unload their riches. Now you can sit in the sun here or even dip your toes in the river. Always a lot of people around, and a good place for a long walk.

It's nice place to walk, very popular. There is an "urban beach", a bit of sandy beach, special relaxing/sunbathing benches (which I really liked). We were there during public holiday on 25th April and the waterfront was full of stands offering various goods, drink and food.

This is quite a lovely area, particularly on a bright sunny day! When it's cloudy and wintry then the water tends to be cold and the general atmosphere is not pleasant at all. We visited on a coldish sort of day with strong winds and it was not the best day to be there!
