About
A must-visit in Lisbon, the Museum of Contemporary Art – MAC/CCB opened its doors on October 27th 2023. The Museum receives in deposit works from the State Contemporary Art Collection (CACE), the Teixeira de Freitas Collection, the Ellipse Collection, and the Berardo Collection.
Names such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Louise Bourgeois, Paula Rego, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman or Cindy Sherman, among many others, are presented on the board of the movements that their works allowed to define, enabling a journey through time and an in-depth knowledge of each context.
The new MAC/CCB, which includes the Architecture Center/Garagem Sul, affirms the mission of the Centro Cultural de Belém, enhancing the dialogue between visual arts, architecture, and performing arts with the presentation of temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists.

Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

- Theodoros M11 contributionsI was positively shocked by the sufficient amount of exhibits on the two levels of the museum. Apart from the impressive building, the popart section was my favourite as I saw works of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Another positive thing is the price of the museum (12 euros) which was reduced on my visit to 7 euros! There’s still another gallery to open soon, so I guess when I visit Lisbon in the future I’d definitely visit this museum again.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 27, 2024
- KennethEastChicago, Illinois179 contributionsOur group loved the main collection of the MAC. It reminded me of the Thyseen-Boremisza Museum in Madrid. Instead of an overview of 13c to 20c art, the MAC focuses on 20-21c art. Wonderful individual works. But the sum was much more than its parts. The curators have provided a wonderful tour of the major artistic threads of the last century or more. But one person in our group took advantage of the combined entrance ticket to venture to the Architecture Center across the plaza from the main MAC/CCB building for its much more Portugal-centric offerings. He was enthusiastic about an exhibit that tracked the impact of the hilly topography of Lisbon on the strong and inward looking multiple neighborhoods.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 29, 2024
- Graeme WEdinburgh, United Kingdom135 contributionsWe visited here after a trip to the MAAT gallery that is a short walk away. After some initial difficulties in finding the entry and ticket office we went in. There is a large and diverse collection of modern work, all artistic styles are represented. In some ways there is too much to take in at one trip I was a bit numbed by the end. Unfortunately I can’t see me being able to make a return trip anytime soon. Together this galley and MAAT are well worth the trip from the centre of Lisbon. We walked but you can do it by public transport. It’s about 3 miles. And the restaurant here Uniquo is social enterprise that also makes tremendous food so support that when you visitVisited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 17, 2024
- MoniaitsLondon, United Kingdom1,737 contributionsThe Museum (or rather Art Gallery) is very large and very impressive. Exhibits in each room are from a particular art movement and are displayed chronologically. Each art movement is explained at the entrance of each room. Highly recommended if you’re in Belem.Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 19, 2024
- allegrabrondi2 contributionsThe museum has a vast collection of artworks, you easily spend at least 3h inside if you want to enjoy the museum to the fullest! Lots of contemporary art and an immersion into surrealism, Dadaism etc. There’s also a big wall in glass facing exotic plants which is really relaxing! Loved itVisited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 11, 2024
- Claire M1 contributionCCB/MAC is an architectural and cultural splendour. They house exhibitions and live performances by the likes of Marco Da Silva, Fred Sandback and their permanent exhibition is beautifully curated. If in Lisbon, this venue must be on your list of places to experience.Visited November 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 8, 2025
- GiugularRavenna, Italy156 contributionsHuge museum structure and modern architecture. The exhibition of contemporary art is very beautiful, the path from the early twentieth century to the eighties, by genre, is perfectly constructed. There are important works. To visit! Very nice. Then in the complex there are several shops, bars and restaurants and gardens. Have a nice trip!Visited December 2024Traveled with familyWritten December 28, 2024

- Carmen ESantiago, Chile2,568 contributionsYou have to visit it. From the entrance with its gardens to the works found in the MAC, they are unmissable. It is a very well arranged space where it is possible to learn something about Picasso, Dali, Bacon, Warhol, Duchamp and more. Jorge Molder's photographs disturbed me a little. And I was impressed by the work of Robert Gober, and also that of Adriana Varejão. Additionally, at level 0, a special mention to the architectural work of Marina Tabassum.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 12, 2024
- ArtsyGalBaltimore895 contributionsThe museum is located in a modern complex. I only toured the second floor Berardo Collection Museum and oh what a collection. The collection is arranged by schools and well narrated in two languages. Signage is clear and it is probably the most well designed review of art that allows one to focus on the art itself instead of what room or where to go next. Kudos to all who have made this museum a reality.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 2, 2024

Don’t bother. Staff rude, very dismissive, sold us tickets, did not ask if we wanted to pay in pounds or euros- charged us in pounds (more expensive) You should airway pay in local currency. We asked for an Audio guide. They said they did not have one. Turned out it was broken so we could not understand much about the exhibits. We looked for the Jackson Pollocks, which appeared on the leaflet, when we asked where his works were she told us, at the end, that his stuff had gone to another museum- this was one of the few things we wanted to see. There were 2 Picasso paintings, a few Andy Warhols, but apart from that it was weird. ….if you like looking at torn cushion covers which people think is ‘Art’ then go ahead. Cafe also expensive, but comfortable and bright. Waste of time and money in our opinion.

The museum is incredible, it has a rich and diverse collection, I loved several of the works and I could spend hours and hours wandering around there. What caught my attention was Magritte's work, but there were several works by lesser-known and incredible artists as well. Dalí, Andy Warhol and more!
I really loved the museum, they have so many pieces from different styles and artists. All the building is an art, the nature and everything is nice there. You should visit for sure!

This so called art exhibition included a photograph of a man masturbating, a picture of a naked woman with a fresh scar from having a surgery for ectopic pregnancy, a picture of a naked pregnant woman lying on what looked like a prison floor, two men hanging by their tongues. It was a more a display of dehumanisation than of ‘art’. Not one piece evoked any uplifting emotion. Do not take children to this exhibition!

An exceptional Museum in Belem! Collection from the 20th century to the present day, it offers a very high level overview of Contemporary Art, from Picasso to Warhol, for example. Over 65: 50% reduction on the entrance price

The very informative collection of Modern Art has just reopened in the massive white block of Centro Cultural Belem. It presents all the different trends in late 20th century European and North American art. Comparing the works of well established artists like Yves Klein, Renato Guttuso and Niki de Saint Phalle to their less famous colleagues gives a wider picture of each gategory.

This exhibition offers a great journey through the history of modern art. The collection has some great pieces from all the main 20th century art movements and gives great contextual descriptions of each movement. Make sure you give yourselves a few hours to explore this great collection. Great value or money.

I love art. It defines much of my life. And having been to Lisbon dozens of times, I have never made it to the CCB. What a revelation! A truly sensational, international collection - beautifully curated and explained and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. From the Weimar artists to Lee Krasner, Picasso and Bacon. A truly important museum.

Great collection! Not only you will find big names like Picasso, Dali, Warhol, de Steal, Bacon, Morandi, Rothko... But the collection itself is so well laid out - I loved it. It costs 10€.
