Neighborhood: Parque das Nações
This neighborhood was built up at the end of the 1990s mostly because of the Expo '98. The pavilions and structures that once were the home of all the Expo's attractions and exhibits are still culturally and artistically significant. In Parque das Nações you'll explore conference and concert pavilions, a shopping center, trendy restaurants and an enjoyable cable car ride you can't miss out on. On top of this, the amazing Lisbon Oceanarium (one of the most spectacular things you'll ever see in the city) will take your breath away: its respect and will to preserve natural wildlife is uncanny. Easily accessible by metro, bus or taxi from the city center, Parque das Nações is highly recommended for anyone who'll spend more than 3 days in the Portuguese capital.

Interesting architecture

Gare do Oriente, also known as Gare Intermodal de Lisboa, is one of the most important rail and road links in Lisbon. This beautiful train station, subway and bus station, designed by the famous Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, is covered with a structure of glass and steel. It was completed in 1998 and was used as part of Expo '98. There is an excellent shopping area on the lower floor.

Spectacular from afar and appeals to camera fans. It is sad to see that maintenance is overdue when you get closer. One can walk from here through the Vasco da Gama Mall to the water front. The waterfront provides a fantastic view of the Vasco da Gama bridge and is an ideal place for leisure walking.

Poor Maintenance, Lax Security
Feb 2020
While the station is beautiful and the staff helpful, I felt it was worth passing on my experiences for other travelers. Firstly, as a disabled traveler, access to public toilets is a high priority for me. The toilets were poorly kept, vandalised, and essentially unusable for someone like me, which made waiting in the station particularly difficult. Secondly, while the staff had a lot of information, I felt that there wasn't enough staff and enough information - the staff had mostly left by the time I had to catch my train and the departure and arrival boards only showed the next five or so trains - it was hard to tell what was coming and where. Thirdly, I was made extremely uncomfortable by the amount of men begging for money. Men begging for money repeatedly approached me while I waited and wouldn't leave me alone - one came back to me four times in total, each time putting his infected hand right up into my face. I felt unsafe and there was no staff around to talk to about this. I would caution other women travelling through this station to be aware of this, to not wait too long in the station, and to remain in areas with other travelers.

The Station

The 5 bubbles is for the architecture, not necessarily the train station. It's all lit up at night and the mall is right across the street although it has everything you would want.

Work of art
Dec 2019 • Couples
Gare do Oriente is a work of art by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The station, which is located in Parque das Nações, integrates with Shopping mall Vasco da Gama, across the street, via a connecting bridge. The waiting rooms are fine and the ticket office stuffs are freindly. This station does not have any free wifi. Metro/subway is under the train station and bus stopages are just beside the train station.

There are charging points inside the station. Self service luggage locker room also available.

The station is a short walk from several attractions including the cable car, MEO Arena, Casino Lisboa, the Oceanarium, water garden etc.
