This walk takes you from the top end of Parque Eduardo VII, in the centre of Lisbon, via the Jardim Amalia Rodrigues, to the Parque Florestal de Monsanto. This route is for walkers and cyclists only and there are wide and clearly marked paths for both. It is an easy walk to the edge of the park, perhaps an hour. We took a picnic and explored a small part of this enormous park. There is a wonderful view over Lisbon, looking down from the highest point. We intend to go back for a guided tour of this big green space so very close to the city. It felt like Lisbon’s version of London’s Hampstead Heath.

I asked a Uber to drop me near the park and ran a 11km loop there. It is quite hilly, but very nice , with lovely scenic views at some point. We didn't try but I guess it would be nice for a family walk and pic nic too on a sunny daty

I am a runner that happens to live near this Forest, so I go there at least 5 or 6 times per week and know fairly well the area.
It is not easy to get there without a car as you have just a few buses that are not that regular or easy to take from the city center.
This is one big place to explore and if you have time and the will you can easily spend 8 hours there and discover wonderfull trails and breathtaking views of Lisbon.
It is wild and a bit uncharted territory in the middle of the city which honestly is what makes monsanto so special.
Avoid going there late at night as you can easily get lost and have a hard time finding your way back home.
If you are into running or mountain biking just follow someone or a group and they happily show you around.

It is hard to believe that within the city of Lisbon, Portugal is a protected forest of almost 2500 acres. It sweeps over the hills and meadowlands and is appreciated and used by its urban inhabitants. There are hiking trails and paths for strolling. I was impressed with its size and how accessible it is to people. A great addition to the capital city of Portugal.

If you're visiting Lisbon, you must go to Monsanto Park, specially to the old Panoramic Restaurant at the top of a hill. This restaurant was abandoned for decades, but now it has been rehabilitated and is one of the best hidden secrets of Lisbon. You will find many locals there, but not as much tourists because of the difficult access.

The area is lovely, but I found the lack of trail maps and signage made it difficult to navigate or understand where thngs were. I took the 711 bus and got off near an area that is apparently by a military area and prison. I spent the next 2 hours trying to find my way to a hiking area with signs. When I finally did find a map, it did not seem to correspond to what I was seeing on the ground, and there were no distance markings on the map to help navigate. Lots of trails, but very little in the way of signs to give you an idea where you are. Plus, there were noisy roads criss-crossing through some parts of where I walked. I left after about 4 hours, feelng mostly frustration.

A lot of trails around the park that will dive you into a very healthy forest with a lot of panoramic views to Lisbon as well as Sintra and the big scale of Monsanto.
It's very nice to have such a vast Nature just next to Lisbon.

We went to se the Parque de Monsanto because we wanted to have a break from busy Lisbon city life. Thus the Monsanto park seemed a good option. We went there for hiking and relaxing and all in all we really enjoyed our trip. The nature is beatuiful and wild, it's nice to forget about the traffic while you're not far away from the city centre.
The downside: The park was not easy to find. There's a map in Eduardo Park to guide the way. Unfortunately that's pretty much the only sign we saw. We made our way the way we thought was right - and we found it. But a good map would have been nice. Also in the park it's a bit difficult, again because there are not enought signs and maps or the maps are outdated.

This is a place to relax, to jogging and tohave fresh air. Here you can find a place to be with your kids, at Parque Infantil, a place to have a picnick or simply to walk, cycle or relax surronded by green and nature

We will soon be visiting the Lisbon Coast (Cascais). We'll be there for 3 weeks from the end of June and we will have a 4 year old child with us. We intend to visit the Zoo and wondered if the children's play area, in Monsanto, is within walking distance of the zoo? Or would that not be advisable in the same day - Monsanto looks very big! It would be helpful if we knew the exact location of the play area... could someone help by pointing out the precise location of the play area within the park on Google maps perhaps? Thanks in advance!
