Neighborhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Vibrant city area . We had tapas and sangria in the center of this placa on a Sunday afternoon..
Crowded on a Sunday.. you can see this spot clearly from the castle up top. We enjoyed walking the place and seeing several streets off the main square for shopping and dining. Returned to the area for dinner .

One of the squares in the city center
Praca Da Figueira is one of the three main squares (two others are Rossio and Praca do Comercio) of the city and is located in the center of the Baixa district. This was the site of a huge hospital destroyed in the earthquake. With no money to replace the hospital, the space was left open until the late 1880s, when it was filled with a big iron-framed market (similar to Barcelona's La Boqueria). That structure was torn down decades ago, leaving the square you see today. On this plaza located the famous and historic cafe shop Confeitaria National, it is venerable palace of sweets little changed since the 19th century). Also this square is a transportation hub, with stops for minibus to the castle, the old trolley to the Alfama viewpoint, the modern trolley heading out to Belem, and the touristic hop-on, hop-off buses. In the center of plaza is the statue of Portugal's King Jaao I on a horse.

    Nice square…
This square is found near Rossio square in the Baixa district of Lisbon. Many cafes, shops and restaurants are found. The statue is King Jaao on a horse ( king in 1300 known for having preservation) . The trolley heading out to Belem and the hop on hop off buses go around the square.

Statue of the Lower Pombalina "overwhelmed" by taxis to the hills
Beautiful square that, unfortunately, loses much of its charm by the confusion generated by so many taxis. It is true that they are useful, it is true that people need to live, but I feel that we must put a stop to so much "visual pollution", which destroys much of what we possess. In my case, I hated seeing the heap of taxis, which I avoided to photograph, but which was not possible, from where I was. D. John I, in his royal and equestrian position, would not be proud of the "madness" surrounding him. He knew how to surround himself with someone intelligent to advise him, it is not in vain that he is in Baixa Pombalina! I would also like to see intelligent people surrounded by equally intelligent collaborators today...

    Place without much interest
Praça da Figueira is located in the city centre, adjacent to Rossio. Much less interesting than its neighbor, with more traffic and only one statue (Joao I). The food market is still worth the trip.

There are a lot of historical squares in Lisbon, most of them dominated by statues, fountains, or a little central parc. Lisbon is an amazing city and I loved every minute of our visit.
What makes the Figueira Square important is that a few public trasnportation lines start from here, including tram 15 which will take you along the river all the way to Belem. Hoping on a tram or bus at the terminal is always better since they will get really crowded, really fast.
The trip is a sight-seeing experience on its own and it costs close to nothing. Especially if you invest in a one or two days Lisbon card which will include public transportation all around the city.

"Praça da Figueira" is one of the iconic squares at Lisbon's "Baixa Lisboeta" or "Baixa Pombalina". After the terrible earthquake of 1755, the ruins of an old hospital were removed and the area re-urbanized, becoming, along the centuries, an important square. At the beginning of the years 2000, "Praça da Figueira" was totally renovated and is today one of the main hubs of the city's transport system. At its center, a magnificent bronze equestrian statue of King Dom João I. Many tuk-tuks are seen around it, awaiting visitors for tour rides. Famous "Confeitaria Nacional" is at one of its corners. Enjoy!

The most likely reason you’ll find yourself here is to catch the #15 tram to Belem. This is where the tram starts its journey so getting on here is your best chance of getting a seat.
The plaza itself is nowhere near as attractive as Rossio or Commercio. It’s a large, open, exposed space with a plain grid & block pattern on the paving.
The main feature is an equestrian statue of King John I. Although it looks very traditional, it’s actually pretty new and was only placed here in 1971.
John I was king for around 50 years, from 1357 to 1433. He secured both Portugal’s independence and developed very strong ties with England. I was mostly intrigued by his connection with the Treaty of Windsor - the oldest treaty in the world. Way, way back on 9 May 1836, he signed an alliance with England which is still in force today, over 630 years later. I found that remarkable – it’s a long time to have someone’s back.

Really is nothing wonderful. Dirty with some sketchy characters. Usual shops and whatever else. The Sunday evening I walked by, there was a market selling food and drinks and quality but pricey products from bags to jewellery and more. Nice to browse. Not sure if this is always there. Otherwise don't bother!

Figgy square as we call it. We were in town when the Pope army were there and every night on the long building by the bus stops they showed a film on the building wall and it was great. The style was Disney-esque and it was about the Popes visit but also about the world and a bit of history.

We got engaged by the statue so it's a great square for us and one to visit again.

You can come and go from this square in various ways by public transport, the train station and the metro. The Hop on Hop off bus also has its first entry here. And the TukTuk On this square there is a statue of a man on a horse A DOM JOAO. There are also several restaurants in the area and the occasional market with nice stalls

This square is a major transportation center. Home to the origination of the 15 trams for the easy ride to the Belem district. Also, many bus lines originate from here. Just a short distance from Martim Moniz and Rossio. A very large quantity of tuk-tuk’s queue here if you so desire to ride one. There is a large equestrian statue of Dom Joao 1 located here.

In 1971, a bronze equestrian statue representing King John I was inaugurated in the square. The monument also bears medals with the effigies of Nuno Álvares Pereira and João das Regras, two key figures in the 1385 Revolution that brought John I to power. If you find yourself, take some time.

We were headed to Praça de Figueira but ended up in Roccio where there were lots of great cafes, stores & sites. It was days later while on the Hop on Hop Off bus that we realized had we turned left instead of right we would have been at the Praça. Nevertheless we enjoyed exploring.
