Top ways to experience Jardim da Praca do Imperio and nearby attractions

The area
Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

This garden makes for a pleasant stroll between Belem’s big hitting attractions. There is a fascinating little corner, easily missed, where 25 plant species found in the monastery carvings and artwork are being grown, with explanation boards. The garden is well maintained and the central fountain and large pond at the main road side are both very nice.

The Jardim da Praca do Imperio or Gardens of the Empire Square is a public square and park just opposite the Jerónimos Monastery. Aside from all the tourist attractions around the square and area, the gardens are very classical and regular like an Italian gardens. Although the gardens are peaceful and pleasant, it feels like there's a dearth of flower and other plants to make it really pretty. Inside the gardens is an impressive fountain that illuminated at night, and two beautiful Hippocamp statues.

During our tourist walk from the Belem tower we ended up here. The fountains and gardens are very pretty and even tranquil. We sat and enjoyed the beauty.

Great set of gardens that are clean and well maintained. There are hedge mazes and a grand fountain in the center that pulses up and down regularly. Reflecting pools frame the corners and sculptures dot the landscaping. Perfect for a stroll with your loved one(s).

Well appointed and maintained plaza, green and with some water works, worth walking around to take few photos, especially with a monastery in the background. It’s a favorite spot for a lunch break too.

Jardim da Praca do Imperio is a city square, with manicured gardens, and is also considered a central piece, to the many surrounding attractions, all within walking distance.

An impressive central fountain dominates the views in full glory when active.

Enjoy the calm serenity of these gardens, all while experiencing a relaxing walk throughout this area.

Placed between two of the most popular tourists sights in Lisbon, this formally laid out garden doesn't seem to get nearly as much attention. Retreat in here to get away from the hustle bustle of the tourists crowding towards the Jeronimos monastery. If you're clever, you can find places to strategically take pictures of the monastery using the trees and bushes to cover the buses and people.

They are nice gardens and the backdrop is impressive on both sides with the river and the monastery but the fountain was not operating which was disappointing.

Wow, what a plaza, what a view. Across the street, another piece of the Portuguese rich history. From that pier, they sailed to the unknown seas.

Excellent depiction of the history of Portuguese sailors exploring the world. Also the map of the world was a sight to see.
