We were in the area, so we decided to pop into this (slightly hard to find) museum - to be honest, we had very little idea what we'd see. In July 2016 the entrance fee was 1,50 each.
Bordallo was a satirist, cartoonist, and ceramisist (is that the word for someone who makes ceramics?)
First up - the ceramics, although there weren't many of them, were extremely fine - I'm not usually a fan of this art-form myself, but these were pretty amazing.
As for the cartoons - well - you could easily spend the whole day here, maybe even a week, carefully reading each and every one (in Portuguese, of course). Some we understood, but, being unfamiliar with the politics of the time (late 19th century), quite a lot was wasted on us - perhaps the museum could, for just a few of them, write some commentary to provide the necessary context to more fully appreciate them.

Before last week, I’d never even heard of Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro (1846-1905)! It was quite by chance that I even noticed the museum that’s dedicated to his life and works.
So, the info presented here has been directly lifted from Wikipedia.
‘ ... was a Portuguese artist known for his illustration, caricatures, sculpture, and ceramics designs. Bordalo Pinheiro created the popular cartoon character Zé Povinho (1875) and is considered the first Portuguese comics creator.‘
Getting to this museum was a major undertaking - not so much because of the metro, but because of the ‘post-metro’ search. A few signs along the way, or even a sign outside the main exit from the metro, would have been a big help!
The place is way out in the ‘boonies’, and the wide, multi-lane, deafening traffic arteries are probably only best tackled by pedestrians with massive courage and stubborn perseverance.
Once found, this tiny museum is an absolute delight! Well worth the effort of getting there! As has been the case so many other times, I was the only tourist there at the time. :-)
Aside from his obvious creative talent, Bordalo Pinheiro must have had a terrific sense of humour. With very few exceptions, most of the items were labelled with info tags in Portuguese. However, some of the exhibits seem to border on political satire, which, in another era might have brought him grief from ‘unappreciative authorities’.
Getting there:
Taxi, of course, or
Metro: yellow line; exit at Campo Grande.
Go straight out the main front entrance and down the escalator.
At the bottom, in front of you, you’ll see a major traffic overpass; behind you, you’ll see the huge big NOS sign on the building from which you’ve just exited the metro.
(Just use these as points of reference.)
You’ll walk across the main traffic arteries (under the overpass), and you should see a lovely big park in front of you and a large, rather unattractive red-and-white ISG sign straddling the corner on your left.
Head down Campo Grande on the side with the ISG sign, with the park across the street on your right.
The Museu Bordalo Pinheiro is only a few metres along Campo Grande at #382.
Hours open:
Tuesday to Sunday: 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Closed Mondays.
Security guard will check your temperature with a temperature gun.

We were very surprised that we were the only visitors at the time we visited. There is a short film about the life of Bordalo that is worth seeing as it shows what he achieved during his life. It's in Portuguese but has English subtitles and is about 10 minutes long. The museum includes some very large pots and ceramic animals plus a selection of caricatures. A very talented individual.
There is also a gallery attached to the museum but unfortunately this was closed on the day we visited. We will definitely return to visit the gallery.
If you enjoy the museum it is definitely worth visiting The Museu de Cidade just across the park (about 5 mins walk) as they have an amazing garden that has a selection of his animal ceramics on the walls and in the gardens.

Nice little museum at campo grande. The ceramic works are very impressive since they are so detail. Also the cartoons were quite interesting.

Be sure to allow enough time to view this extraordinary collection. A nice view into life at the time and what it must have been like to be surrounded by so many beautiful objects. The museum staff has created a wonderful display. Highly recommended.

The best museum for hardly any cost. We have never been to such an exhibition of an artist with so much diversity.
