About
Around Lisbon is not your typical Tour Company, as you may have known them. In fact, we don’t like to think of Around Lisbon as a business. It is rather the special life project of two friends, who wanted to develop a friendly local company to cater to like-minded people from all over the world. Our goal is to be your "local friends" who help you enjoy Lisbon and Portugal to the fullest. That makes our day too.

I booked my Sintra and Cascais tour with Around Lisbon, a decision that I would recommend anyone looking for a memorable and insightful experience. While it can be nerve wrecking to book a tour in another country and not know if it’ll match your expectations, I can guarantee you that Around Lisbon will not disappoint. Almost immediately after booking they emailed to confirm the tour, and pick up location and time. They maintained a sense of professionalism and eased my mind about the trip. The tour itself, led by John, was fun, unforgettable, and knowledgeable. He was able to explain the history of the places we were visiting with detail, while also allowing for plenty of time for us to explore on our own. He was very accommodating with our interests during the trip. And was a great conversationalist with plenty of noteworthy recommendations, such as places to visit and eat, that only a local could offer. Overall, an unforgettable experience with Around Lisbon - visiting the highlights of Sintra and Cascais and meeting new people!

We hired Nuno to take us to Nazare & Obidos. This was a private tour so we could spend as much time in each location as we wanted to. Nuno was excellent. Very knowledgeable & with a great sense of humor. We were never rushed for time & he enjoyed how much fun we had. Private tour with Nuno is the way to go!

I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to have a beach day and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Lisbon. My friend and I had a wonderful tour guide named Nounou. He was interesting and informative throughout the experience. We took an air-conditioned minivan to the village of Peniche to hop on a boat to the Berlenga Island. The trip to the island is around 1 hour. If you had any sort of seasickness/ motion sickness, chances are that you will get sick during the boat ride. Unfortunately, I did not feel too great throughout the ride but our tour guide had bags for people who became nauseous. I would recommend to the people who get sick, to go to the front of the boat to sit on the beanbag chairs, to minimize the seasickness. Coming back from the island was better than going to the island since you are riding with the waves and not against them. When we were on the island, you had the choice of kayaking or going on the glass bottom boat. I would recommend kayaking if you are adventurous. You don't necessarily need to know kayaking to do this activity. Remember to bring an extra set of clothes since you will get wet. If you can, bring a waterproof pouch for your phone so you can take beautiful photos when kayaking. We had free time to enjoy the beach which was lovely. Overall, this is a wonderful trip for friends, and family with older kids. The last tip is to pack some lunch since there is only one cafe/restaurant on the island. This will save you time so you will have more time at the beach.

Pene Palace in Sintra and the seaside city of Cascais are both amazing.

Unfortunately, our guide, John, was amazingly bad. For starters, his knowledge level was poor. He proudly identified a sequioa tree for our group. Unfortunately, the sequioa was a different tree about 15 feet away. He stated that Pene Palace, incredibly, took only 3 years to build (it took 12).

More important, he was incredibly rude to our entire group.

1. "This is Portugal. This is not the United States. We must do everything on time. Now you have made us 5 minutes late." And here I thought we were on vacation.

2. "Because you have a great guide, you do not need to worry about lines. But this takes expert and precise planning." Then we waited in line for 45 minutes.

3. "I had an 84-year-old woman on this same tour yesterday. She walked faster than all of you."

4. "Do not take photos while I am talking. You can take photos after I'm done."

John's lack of any people skills made our entire group uncomfortable and detracted from what should have been an enjoyable day on vacation. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Dear 314: We're sorry we can´t identify you better and call you by your name. Our apologies for that. Regarding your comments on John, we're very surprised as he usually is a very caring and accomodative person. Anyway, we're deeply sorry that your experience with Around Lisbon was less positive than it should have been. If you'd be so kind to contact us at our email bookings@aroundlisbon.pt, we'd be happy to try to find a way to compensate you for any inconvenience. Thanks so much, Gil Manager

I am a professor and teach in the hospitality and tourism industry, and travel extensively. I will avoid this company at all costs in the future, and recommend to fellow travelers to do the same.

There are no words to describe my disappointment with this tour company. After running behind picking up customers before my scheduled pick-up (which they were already over one hour late as it was, and not due to boat/sea conditions), I continued waiting patiently in the lobby of a hotel I was scheduled to be picked up at, as instructed before hand.

They didn't bother to come into the lobby, but proceeded to text me stating they couldn't find me, and were moving on to get to the boat. Keep in mind, they didn't come into the hotel as they said they would, nor tell me what the vehicle would look like so I could watch for it, or even call the hotel.

Upon emailing them immediately for a solution, as they stated would occur in their text, I received a response late into the evening. They claim this hasn't occurred before, but I highly doubt that. They state a refund is being issued, but it doesn't include any of fees that I had to pay to use my credit card to reserve. Not only did I not get to see this beautiful island, but I lost an entire travel day in Portugal.

Very, very disappointed.

Dear Michelle, Let me start to tell you that we sincerely regret this misunderstanding with the pick-up and totally understand your disappointment for missing the opportunity of visiting the beautiful Berlenga Island. We immediately gave instructions for a full refund with Viator, with whom you bought the tour. Please accept our sincere apologies, and also accept our invitation to visit Berlenga Island for free, the next time you visit Portugal. This was an one time misunderstanding event, on our 4 year experience, as our other 294 Tripadvisor reviews clearly show. However, I would like to emphasize that this misunderstanding happened for many reasons and not all of them are on Around Lisbon to blame. I guess you, being a tourism professor, should know better than the majority of the people the importance of providing valid contacts when making a booking. Moreover, Viator itself, asks their customers to contact the local provider (in this case us, Around Lisbon) in order to reconfirm all pick-up details, as despite the tour description states that it starts at 9h00, this schedule is always subject to changes due to sea conditions and boat suppliers on this particular tour. Having said this, let me remind that your booking submitted on June 25th, through Viator, had no accommodation details at all and a cell phone contact number that it wasn’t working, as we tried to reach several times on the 48 hours prior to the tour date (July 22nd ), which it made difficult to organize the pick-up in time as you can imagine. On the eve of the tour date we finally got a voice message from your side informing the accommodation details (Hotel Afrin, where no one recognized you as guest when we called there), an e-mail address and a valid Portuguese cell phone number. Instantly we sent an e-mail with all pick-up details and additional information regarding the tour, that you firstly mentioned not having received it, but in the end it was on your spam folder, as you later replied it. As this was a shared tour, with multiple pick-ups, sometimes we do get late due to traffic conditions or, this particular case, late customers. This is why we texted that same morning informing that, unfortunately we were running late, but on the way to meet you. And what happened is that our guide did went to Hotel Afrin (Av. João XXI) and couldn’t find you. We also called the Hotel Afrin and they said they had no guest on your name. Finally we called your Portuguese cell phone number that you provided us the day before (+351 913888833) but unfortunately with no answer from your side. We then had to decide to leave, for the sake of all other 15 customers on the group, in order to arrive in Peniche to get the boat to Berlenga. Again, this was an unfortunate misunderstanding, from both parts. On our side we assure you the full refund, invite you to visit Berlenga the next time you come to Portugal, and also take our conclusions and lessons to avoid similar situations in the future. Let me finish just saying that sometimes what we learn in theory it turns to happen to be much different in real life. Yours truly, Tiago Faro – Around Lisbon Manager

TL;DR: Don't miss Sintra, but spend more than a half day there.

First off - I want to make clear that I didn't have a "bad" experience by any means. But, if you're like me, you're trying to quickly research what will be the best use of your time & money on a day trip out of Lisbon.

Our tour stopped at Cascais and I just didn't get it. It's a sleepy beach town with a weird amount of Indian restaurants on its main "historical" street. Honestly nothing special. Our tour guide also recommended *against* going into the palace/citadela so maybe that's what the big deal is about? I'm not sure...

Then we stopped at Cabo da Roca and that was great. Granted we had unusually nice weather, but I would recommend picking a tour that includes this if possible.

Lastly, we went to Sintra it BLEW MY MIND! To note: this tour *only* covers the Pena Palace and provides free time (no tour per se) of the historical center - but there are actually a TON of other things to see in Sintra. I wish I had done a full day Sintra tour to see more. Specifically I wish I could have seen the Quinta da Regaleira. Pro tip: when they give you free time in the historical center, you have time to *power walk* to Quinta da Regaleira if you're so motivated...I learned this too late to do it myself :(

Berlenga Island was amazing! We recommend it 100%!! Where we were greatly disappointed was in our tour guide, Dave. He was not sociable at all and would only give short answers to any questions we had. During the drive to and from the town of Peniche (1h drive) he was very distracted and careless! He was on his cellphone checking his Facebook, phone messages and google maps. He drove very fast and seemed to need to pass everyone around us. We did not feel safe in the car AT ALL! The tour advertises air conditioned van; it was not! Once we got to the island, his instructions and expectations for us were unclear which resulted in us being rushed through the hike, not having time to explore the fort and getting yelled at by the kayak guides on the island; very disappointing! The only time he showed interest in us was towards the end of the tour, when tip time came, which we did not provide! Was Berlenga island worth it? ABSOLUTELY! But avoid booking with “Around Lisbon” tours and especially avoid David Ferreira Barata!

Thank you so much for your remarks. We're really sorry you felt somewhat disappointed. Regarding your guide for the day, he's not working with us anymore, as the company's management decided he didn't match our standards of safety and quality anymore, following some similar remarks to yours. Once again, our sincere apologies. Thanks for everything!

A wonderful trip, our tour guide and driver Philippe was the best, so friendly and knowledgeable! Pick up and drop off at the hotel was nice and convenient. We had enough time at all the stops. First 1 hour in Cascais (with time for coffee). After that 15-20 min stop at Cabo da Roca (time for taking pictures, don´t forget to take your camera with you on the trip!). Then we drove through the wonderful forest of Sintra, narrow lanes (but not scary at all, no steeps, the streets are surrounded by the forest). Sintra is beautiful, like a fairy tail- wonderland. There we had 1,5 hour time to vist the village and time for lunch. Last we visited Pena Palace and garden (entrance tickets were included so we could go straight in!). Our guide Philippe knew Pena Palace and it´s history very well and liked to share it with us. The trip took a little longer than scheduled 8 hours, partly because of the traffic, partly because of that the group wanted some extra time in Sintra. Thank you for that! It was an unforgettable day, I am glad we picked this tour. Special thanks to our excellent tourguide Philippe!

The guide provided by the company is very friendly and well mannered. However there ends all the good things. She doesn't have enough knowledge of history nor the proficiency in English to explain the History of Lisbon. All our questions were answered by "I really do not know, I need to check". The history tour started with the Roman period, coming through the Moors. However it was not structured thereafter. Not much home work was done.
On conversation we understand that this a third job for her to fill in the time and earn a few Euros.
We are thoroughly disappointed and feel cheated by this company who has engaged an inexperienced guide. I who booked this tour cut a sorry figure with the rest of the group (5) .
I would like the company to investigate and compensate us.

Dear John: Thank you for your feedback. We don't recognize the person you are trying to characterize, as we only have two women doing the Lisbon tour, and they both speak excellent English and are very knowledgeable in History. However, I hope you are aware that there is probably no one that knows all the historic facts about Lisbon, as it simply is too complex and vast. We would kindly ask you to please write us an email, so we can investigate, as suggested, and analyze any possible compensation. Please add the tour date, so we can identify your booking. Thanks in advance, Around Lisbon Management

So to start off I would like to say that I know the company doesn’t have any control over the weather however I still have a few other issues with the trip we did. To start with almost immediately upon our arrival in Peniche two of the vans were combined to make a group of 16 which I didn’t really mind too much except it made it more difficult to hear information at some points. The next thing was that due to weather the kayaks, glass boat and snorkeling were cancelled yet other companies were still running boats and snorkeling, and my big issue was not with the fact it was canceled it was more with the fact that we were only given 10 minutes to explore the fort before being rushed on to boats back to main area were we were given 2 hours of free time...which if you weren’t having lunch there wasn’t really much to do and would have much rather explore the fort more. I would like to conclude with our guide was very nice offering to take picture of us and staying interactive and she tried her best to organize things even though I know she was not calling the shots in terms of timings and cancelations. we just feel like we pretty much paid for a car and boat ride.
