- MancJulieGlasgow, United Kingdom25 contributionsWeekend break at the Lisbon coastLisbon is great, my friend lives there so it made it easy to get around as she knew all the places to go & how to get there, it really helped that she had learned the language as I found that Portuguese is quite hard to understand ( sounded more like Russian to me)! The best tip is to get a transport pass which you can use for the trams, buses, ferry and trains/metro. Taxis are cheap but Uber are even cheaper - from the airport to Costa de Caparica it was between 16 & 20 euros depending on traffic over the bridge. The beach is lovely, will lots of surf shops and restaurants. The temperature was good, even though the Portuguese think it is cold, it was a pleasant 17 in the day, falling to 8-14 at night which would be great back home. There are lots of pastelerias with amazing cakes, sandwiches and croissants, my favourite were the brioche croissants or freshly made sandwiches with sweet potato crisps. Go explore Lisbon, it's amazing sites, lively market & food halls, the sardine shops and museums. Would definitely return as there is plenty to do both sides of the river. Wear comfy shoes as you will do a lot of walking and some of the streets are quite steep especially if you head up to the castle walls area.Visited March 2020Traveled with friendsWritten March 6, 2020
- Maestra Catalina2 contributionsTerrific swimming beachWe took a day trip from Lisbon to Costa de Caparica today and enjoyed one of the top three beaches I have experienced in my whole life - on par with Siesta Key, Florida and Nauset Beach, Massachusetts, USA, and Mazunte, Oaxaca, MX. We took the ferry to Trafaria, then Uber to Praia Riviera where we found fine sand, clear water, gentle waves, and terrific seafood restaurant with beach umbrellas. We visited on a hot Sunday in July so seemed like every family in Lisbon was at the beach today, but never felt crowded or harried. BE ADVISED: NO beach train runs on the narrow gauge tracks anymore. Both our guidebooks (Moon and Lonely Planet, Sept 2021 editions) described this summer season train service running along the beaches from town of Costa de Caparica to points south. Sand has drifted over the tracks and none of our Uber drivers remembered the train ever running.Visited July 2022Written July 10, 2022

- MonP20 contributionsNone touristy beachfront townIt you are looking for a beach town without the English & Irish pubs & want a laid back Portuguese town with good surfing, great restaurants and a bus ride from Lisbon then this is your town.Buy a beach towel and enjoy the endless beach. A pleasant breeze comes in off the Atlantic which kerps temperatures down, bring a light jacket for nighttime. You need to scratch the surface a bit but when you do this none touristy beachfront town will delight you with its small Portuguese style shops and little commercial centres, beachfront bars and coffee shops, dress makers, jewelryshops, ladies clothes etc.. €2.60 brings you into the centre of Lisbon on the local bus. We stayed at the TRYP hotel which was perfect....ask forvz front facing room. Make sure to pop next door to the cocktail bar for a cocktail. - rob sGothenburg, Sweden85 contributionsA real disappointmentWe stayed in Costa de Caparica for 4 days. I'm not sure if we had too high expectations but it was a disappointment. The beach itself was wonderful. It was clean, and swimming among the waves was loads of fun. But along the beach, every fifty meter or so, there were restaurants that I can only describe as large boxes. They really are an eyesore, just as the large charmless hotels are just off the beach. The town itself is even less charming. It's very centralized in the sense that restaurants and shops are on a couple of streets. Most of the restaurants were fast food joints, and a lot of the others weren't even Portuguese. Those that were had very little choice. The atmosphere in town was hectic rather than laid-back. It's a shame because this town has so much potential.Visited September 2020Written October 12, 2020

So, you go to Praça de Espanha with metro, and when you exit the metro station, you will see bus terminal in front. You need to take bus No 153 or No 161. All drivers speak English, and the buses are clearly marked COSTA DE CAPARICA . Tickets are both at drivers, and costs 3.25 euro per person one direction. Buses are AC equipped so the journey is pleasant, and there is plenty of free seats. The journey with bus is approx. 30 minutes, and the buses are leaving every 20 minutes. You will know where to exit, since the beach is so obvious. The beach is 13km long. It is consisted of large number of smaller beaches. Most of them have their cafe bars and lifeguard. For those that one to escape more urban parts, at the end of the walking zone, you can catch a small beach train. It takes you to the most far beaches, separated into two zones. So, first 9 beaches are zone 1 and return ticket is 4.5 euro per person. Other 10 beaches are zone 2 and return it 7.5 euro per person. But to be honest, all beaches are very beautiful. Although ocean is very cold, we really enjoyed the water and sun.Visited July 2013Traveled as a coupleWritten August 7, 2013

The beaches are beautiful and it has many surf schools. My favourite part is the Transpraia which is a small train which runs along the sand dunes and takes you to the other beaches along the coast. There are many lovely restaurants and it is lovely to walk along the promenade in an evening. I love it here.Visited August 2018Written August 27, 2018

The costa de Caparica is very nice and definitely worth a trip to enjoy the sea and the impressive waves! However, I do not recommend to get there with the ferry from Cais do Sodre to Cachillas and then onwards with the bus since you might end up in the local bus which takes forever to reach the coast (the entire journey from Cais do Sodre to Cachillas took us 2 hours). Also, the ferry isn't really nice, the crossing is short and unless you want to see the jesus statue I do not see a reason to visit Cachillas. It is much easier and faster to take the bus 161 from Lisbon center, which takes you to Costa de Caparica and back in 30min!

If you want to blend culture and sun bathing, Lisbon is the place to go. Even if you do not have a car you are spoiled for choice and Caparica is by far one of the best beaches in the all of Europe. It can be accessed by car, a 20 minute drive south of Lisbon or by public transportation, also 20 minute. There are buses from Lisbon to take you there. You can catch them at Areeiro and Praça de Espanha and in locations in between this is bus 161 from TST Bus Company. It will cost you about 5 Euros. When you reach Coasta da Caparica just follow the crowds to the beach a 10 minute walk and there you are, right in front of you 30KM of pristine beach. The farther you get away from the town less crowded and better the beach becomes. Between 15 June and end of August there is also a small beach train running around from the end of Caparica near the Camping Park located on the edge of the city and a 15 minute walk from the bus station. This small train has 20 stops on points along the coast each served by a concession beach with a full equipped restaurant where you can eat and drink. From stop of beach 17 onward the beach becomes clothes optional. This is an amazing beach since it is also located as soon as you leave Caparica town , in a natural park where you stand with no buildings on site. At Costa da Caparica there are also many surf, surf related schools and shops where you can rent water sports equipment. This beach is perfect for children of any age since you can walk for miles knee deep. At low tidy there are several natural swimming pools where small children can play. The only drawback is that the sand is very fine so it sticks to your body like glue. The water is translucent and green emerald and is usually very clean. If you come to Lisbon and the weather permits do not forget to bring your swim suit or go skinny dipping at Costa da Caparica, it will be an unforgettable day.

distance to airport
LuisMoreira

Caparica is a one hour and 30 minutes from the airport. This is to be on the safe side. Usually to Lisbon it is a 20 minute drive even on Bus 116 from TST. But then you have to cross the city and depending on the hour of the day that can take one hour. If you decide to take the bus, you can catch the subway at Areeiro (green line) one station to Alameda and from there you can reach the airport on the Red Line. About the same time as by car or taxi.
