We were early birds at the tucked-away Tejo on Beco do Vigario. In fact, we we’re the only ones in this tiny, enigmatic and bohemian bar that has a reputation for live and impromptu music. Judging by the décor, it’s a ‘grab an instrument and join in’ type of place when it’s rocking. The friendly bar guy told us this happens regularly and is fantastic. We did read Tejo has a bit of celebrity status attached to it on the music front, but on this night 'Madge' was not in town. We we’re enjoying a particularly spectacular gin and tonic when a young, enigmatic piano player appeared from nowhere and started cracking out some Beethoven interspersed with some Nat King Cole and his own compositions. In an instant, Tejo gave us a glimpse of its reputation.

We arrived about 9pm guitarist playing and singing, joined by another guitarist. During the evening various audience members stood up and sang. Cosy little place, very friendly. Lovely experience and it turned out to be really close to our apartment.

We arrived here on the last night of a long weekend city break discovering it was around the corner from our apartment. Must have entered this most unassuming of bars from the outside into o a small room oozing in boho, muso character. John the owner kicked off the music with another guitarist accompanying him and wine did flow. Very generous glasses of red wine for 3 euros. The intimate surroundings had locals, an Austrian couple, an American couple and 3 Engilsh guys who came and went after a set. There was an older Australian gentleman who sang in the last set with John accompanying on guitar. Whilst having a smoke outside we got to talking to Steve the Australian guy and eventually John. I owned up to be a musician and John invited me to do a set, which I did maybe a little the worse for the wine but great fun. We were the last in their and got chatting about single malt, John on learning we were in Lisbon as my birthday treat got the spirits out and we drank them down with invites to go on from the bar to another venue with John and his friends.... A great night, a truly unique bar and a fabulous end to a great weekend in Lisbon. Cannot recommend this place enough and I look forward to our return.
