The area

Address
Neighborhood: Belém
Belém is the "capital of the Portuguese Discoveries" and a photographer's paradise. You can spend an entire day exploring this neighborhood: monuments (Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, Monument to the Discoveries), museums (Coach Museum, Centro Cultural de Belém) and breathtaking views of the Tagus river will make your visit worth your time. Belém also offers a variety of restaurants and cafes, namely the famous - and delicious - "Pastéis de Belém" (typical Portuguese custard tarts; make sure you buy an extra box of those!). Easily accessible from Lisbon's historic center, Belém is a must-do, especially if you're spending more than one day visiting the Portuguese capital.

This museum was built for the 1940 Portuguese World exhibition. My girlfriend and I passed by it going from Torre de Belém to Padrão dos Descobrimentos.

The entry price is 2.5 euros. It was opened in 1948 and has 5 rooms with the permanent collection for each of the 5 regions of the country: Between Douro and Minho; Behind-the-hills; Algarve; Borders; Alentejo and Estremadura. It also has a space for temporary exhibitions.

The collection includes: agricultural instruments, ceramics, baskets; costumes, musical instruments, jewelry, painting and sculpture. They show the diversity of Portugal, with ceramic sarongs and roosters from Minho, baskets from Trás os Montes, ceramics from Alentejo and fishing equipment from the Algarve.

Interesting.

Really interesting exhibition, well laid out, good information in Portuguese and English. €2.50 entrance. Worth a visit to learn more about the applied arts in Portugal. Check their website in advance to see what exhibit is currently showing. Easy to get to by bus or rail.

I should have read some review instead of just looking at the overall ratings. The first one would have been sufficient warning. Don't go off the photos posted here. Check their website for current exhibition(s). The current exhibition is just a bunch of wicker baskets. Super lame. Im really disappointed I went out of my way to go here.

This museum was part of a pavillion from the Portuguese world Exposition in the 60´s that supossed showed the traditions, costumes and handicraft from the diferent parts of Portugal, and is situatted next to Padrão dos descobrimentos and Belem Cultural Center... now a days (however the renovation continues...) the museum is a nerly empty space, with scarce costumes and empty shells. Despite the fabullous wall murals the space is filled with old fotos (from the inauguration) and maybe future projects... the musuem shop has lovely handicrafs that is worth a visit, as well as the cafe in a lovely plaza.

Whatever is in exhibit, it is not everyone's cup of tea. If it is, you will like it. If it is not, not worth visiting.

This was one of the most disappointing museums I have been too especially considering I went out of my way in 30c to get to it, should have checked the website, doh!

The main exhibition was of weaved baskets, not my tempo!

The other exibition was of the development of the area!

The best thing about the museum is the building and its frescos as its a converted church of sorts.

The toilet was closed for maintenance, kind of sums it up really.

If identical pieces of embroidery in plastic bowlsonthe floor with thesound of running water grills your prawns, then this gallery is for you. Me? I just found the whole place weird, lacking in exhibits and character. Avoid it, is my advice.

We wanted to see this when it was in Dulwich, London, but not entirely sure if it was the same one. It was great! Being a maths teacher and taking my 6 year old, we loved seeing the whole story of Escher and especially the mathematically impossible drawings! A great exhibition. The gift shop was a tad limited though.

Escher is quite a fascinating artist with a lot of mathematically inspired works which were really interesting and I loved the exhibiton. The entry was 11 euros and worth every penny.
